Default Anyone tried using actual Peanut-butter for a PT?

I'm in need of a good PT.

I was actually thinking of food that are high protein that might be hair friendly. I was considering doing a honey and banana recipe with some oil too, but then I thought of using actual peanut-butter. I know it's HIGH in protein, and I'm thinking it would be a bugger to get washed out, but would it be worth the try? Has anyone doen this before?

I was thinking of going through with it this evening, possibly mixing in some honey, and olive oil too to give it more liquid like texture.

Thoughts? Warnings? Do I sound crazy?

It actually wound up working pretty good! Obviously a mess to get out, so I strongly urge to try over a weekend.

The second time I've tried it, I used store bought PB that actually had honey mixed in with it, and it was awesome. It def did the trick.

Also, because my hair really has been dealing with some major dryness due to this heat wave we're having in my neck of the woods, I mixed it with some aloe and a little essential oils to thin it out a bit. It really seems to work good with my texture too.

Not something I'd rely on all the time but great in a pinch.

Thanks Gretchen! I just noticed I didn't have this thread subscribed to! I'm not always such a cheapskate but I figure if I can make it rather than buy it, I feel much more curl/wave empowered!

I'm guessing you're based in the US, maybe Canada? I like this idea, but dear god, please no one try this in the UK, or if you do, make sure it's expensive peanut butter (no Sunpat, people!)

I say this because I am an American import to the UK, and much to my derision, most peanut butter is a completely different animal over here. American PB generally has to consistency of margarine or butter spread. If you melt it, it melts and stays melted for a reasonable length of time. I think it must have more oil or something. Major UK brands, on the other hand, congeal almost immediately when you take them off the heat, and even "smooth" varieties are kind of... grainy. I imagine it would be a nightmare to get into your hair, let alone out. It's going to clump and stick like glue.

I might try this some time anyway though. I frequently request peanut butter to be sent in my care packages from back home, because I don't like the stuff here.

I actually know exactly what you mean! My husbands is from the UK and his family sends him care packages here in the US and it is completely different!

I've actually done this twice now, and the first time I used regular old PB but then I tried it with PB that had honey already in it and it worked even better! I also took two eggs, mixed one spoonful of the honey PB in it and did that. It's so easy to clean out and it left my hair feeling AMAZING! I def needed some PT.

I did this yesterday, wow! I thought my curls had dissapeared years ago. (I have been CG for years. I had great hair for a couple years after I went CG, then had my last baby, and my hair went flop.) I think maybe it was just because I didn't have time to care for it anymore?

Anyway, I haven't tried a protien treatment in like 2 years. I guess I just gave up, because nothing seemed to help.

So this is what I did yesterday;

I used (approx)
1 egg
1 heaping T natural peanut butter with honey (will probably use plain next time, as the honey kind has sugar and salt added.)
1 tsp honey
1-2 T olive oil (just enough to make it spreadable)

I rubbed it into my hair. It was hard, so I added a tiny bit of water to make it runnier. I rubbed it in the best I could, then wrapped my head in a plastic grocery bag. I got a towel wet with hot water, and wrapped that around my head to warm it, but I don't think that was needed. I left it in about 2 hours. I shampooed it twice (it all came out fine) and the conditioned with conditioner mixed with oil and let it sit about 15 minutes before rinsing.

I can't believe the difference it made! Whenever I styled my hair curly (wavy), it always looked limp and fried, and blah, and when I didn't style it curly, it looked even worse.
Now my hair just looks so much more... alive! LOL Hard to explain. The curls are formed much better, it has more body, and it doesn't look so fried anymore. It also was much easier to comb out the curls. (I do use a pick, my fingers just don't cut it.)

So I'm about to try this. I have everything all mixed up together, I used coconut oil in place of other oils.

I figure either my hair will love it or hate it

My hair seemed to really like it. I had great curl the next day. However, now the curl is less. I did try new products with the next wash though too.


I think my hair may like protein though
Now I need to figure when & how much.

Sounds very interesting! I've realized that soy milk also contains a lot of protein (7g per cup), so perhaps you'd like to try that in a protein treatment as well.

I highly doubt hair will absorb protein from ground peanuts, the molecules are far too large and many will be bound within the cell wall. The hair can absorb free amino acids and hydrolysed protein - chopped into small pieces using enzymes - it's likely the fats and humectants in the mix that are making hair shiny and bouncy. Ditto eggs.
