xcptnl thank you about warning me for too much honey. i made a batch yesterday about 10 to 12 oz and added 1 tbs of honey and 1 tbs of aloe vera gel. i used it today and had a really great hairday. i love this stuff. i wondered why RR never worked for me but i think you gave the answer in this post, my hair probably doesn't like mag sulfate either. i still have to tweak the routine to get perfect spirals but today i almost had no frizz so that was great!

Lovin', lovin', lovin' me some flaxseed gel!!!!!
So I decided what the heck, why not try some of this flaxseed gel stuff...and WOW, I am completely and utterly hooked!!!!!
I used the basic recipe of 1 cup water/2Tbs of flax seeds. I boiled for about 10min and used a mesh strainer...mine isn't the tightly woven kind, but looser woven so holes are bigger, but seeds are still kept behind. In what I thought would be a "lightbulb" moment, I did try one of those mesh teaball things, but unfortunately, no "goop" would come out (holes WAY too small)!!!!! LOL...but I did run it through the strainer while it was still kinda bubbling and so got plenty of gel...if I were more detemined, I guess I could have gotten more goop separated from the seeds by squeezing them, but I think I will have plenty of gel for the week, so figured I save on the mess factor!
After straining, I added 1/2Tbs of aloe vera gel and then added a couple of drops of lavender oil, just because it smells so good, put it in one of those travel squeezy bottles, shook it up, and popped it into the fridge.
I am a complete convert now, and use it over my Jason Kiwi and Apricot Volumizing Mousse with WONDERFUL CURLY results (I need a picture!)...

I think that when I make my batch this Saturday, I'm going to try to add some honey to it... Figuring maybe 1/8 tsp, or 1/4 at the most for the basic 1 cup water/2 Tbs flax seed recipe (anyone tried the ratio?!)... If that goes well, I might try also adding about 1/8tsp of coarse kosher salt to the mix and see what that does! I'm having fun...my hubby teases me about working magic over my "cauldron"...bubble bubble, toil and trouble stuff!!!!! LOL.
Also,(on a tangent) this morning I tried plopping/plunking my hair with one of my hubby's t-shirts for the first time ever and WOW, what a difference it made in my curls!!!!! Definitely will be added to my routine because I normally wrap my hair in a towel while I put lotion on my shoulders, etc (don't like dripping all over myself), but then my hair would sometimes end up too dry (= less curls/more frizz)... But now I can take care of my hair first and then do everything else while my hair is plopping...I actually think this will also be a great timesaver while I do everything else (including getting my two toddlers ready for "school")!!!!!
I'm truly starting to love my curlies now!!!!! One of these days, I will get some pictures taken, too!!!!!

I made this last weekend, but used too much water (2 cups/2tbsp) so it came out thin like Batia & Aleeza gel. I strained using cheesecloth with no problem. The gel still worked though.
After refrigerating it, is it okay to microwave it for a few seconds to warm it up? I can't put cold stuff on my head.

About how much gel does this make? I have the pleasure of having a lot of hair so I'm just wondering if I need to make a double batch?

And to go along with Notegal's question, how much do you use on your hair? I know that's relative to how much hair you have, but do you use as much as a normal gel? Is it trial and error? Thanks!

It made about 2.5-3.0oz, I think...about 1/2 inch from the neck of one of those 3oz travel bottles from Walmart. My hair is just about shoulder length and fine, and I had leftovers from my first batch...but I've heard that it's only good for a week, even when refrigerated so I went ahead and made a new batch...
As far as how much to use, I just kinda go by feel, I guess. The best thing about this gel is that it seems like it's really hard to overdo it, since it doesn't get crunchy at all...
HTH!

Flax Gel Strainer
Hi Guys,
I've found that straining extra thick flax seed gel is easy if you use a French press (coffee press) to do it. Just add the seeds/gel mixture into the cylinder and press, as you would coffee. To be safe, I usually wait until the mixture has cooled down a bit.

After many attempts (tweaking the amounts of honey and salt/no salt), I have found my HG recipe for flaxseed gel!!!!!
2Tsp of flaxseeds
1cup water
1Tsp of Aloe Vera GEL
1/4tsp of honey
5-10 drops of Lavendar EO
I boil the water/seeds for 10min...meanwhile I have already put the aloe vera gel, honey, and EO in a glass measuring cup... I immediately (while still kinda bubbly) pour the gel through the strainer into the measuring cup and then stir it all together. I then let it cool for a little bit before pouring into my squeezy bottle.
I had tried to use 1/2tsp of honey and that was too drying as was adding any salt to the mix.

Are you using 2 tablespoons or 2 teaspoons of flax seeds to a cup of water.
I am jotting down your recipe to try! Thanks!

Ok, so this stuff is supposed to be kind of the color/consistency of snot? Because I just tried to make some, and I'm a little disturbed by the prospect of putting it in my hair.

Yes, the snotty consistency is perfectly normal - hence the nickname 'booger gel'.
I boiled my last lot far too long. Managed to squeeze it out, but when it cooled it was so thick, like flubber, that when I tipped the bottle up I had to cut it with the scissors! So I stuck it in the blender with jojoba oil and honey, whizzed it up and it looked like banana milk shake. Applied it to my hair yesterday, great curl definition while it was wet but then proceeded to have the WORST hair day ever with mega-frizzy straw-like lank curls.

I've found the best thing to mix the flaxseed gel with is either aloe vera gel or juice, depending on what consistency you are looking for...
My best recipe is to use make the gel (2Tbsp seeds/1cup of water) and then mix in 1Tbsp of aloe vera gel and 1/4tsp of honey, adding lavender EO for great scent. My last batch I used aloe vera juice and the consistency was more like Jessicurl's RR (which I like)...
 HTH!!!!!

Sorry if I missed this...but
do you have to store / keep this in the refrigerator?
(or are you just putting it in there to cool down after first making it?)
Can I keep it in my bathroom with my other prodducts?
Thank you.

I made up a batch of this yesterday and added some Walgreen's aloe gel (1 TBSP) and just a dab of honey(about 1/4 tsp). I got really nicely defined root to tip curls that were shiny but a lot of surface frizz. Not sure if it was the honey (I've had frizz issues wth honey before) but I also had rubbed some oil into my hair the night before and only cowashed it out in the morning. I usually need to poo oils out cause my hair doesn't do well if I leave oils in it.
So, I will try it again today but poo my hair first to start off with a clean slate.
