No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE!

Belasuna, thanks so much for pointing that out! I was a bit confused about which type of grapefruit oil, and the salesperson I spoke with at Whole Foods was also unsure but directed me to the grapefruit EO. Good to know, I'll make sure to get the right stuff.

Any other EOs good as preservatives? I saw people mentioning rosemary, lavender, or just vitamin E oil - I'm looking for a preservative I can use that has a fairly inoffensive odor. Thanks!
3A with some bits of 3B; fairly porous, I think (bumpy strands!), growing out old dye damage. No chemical treatments/color since 06/2010.

Growing my hair as far as it'll go - approaching hip stretched, waist curly!
FSG stopped working for me It was my total HG for 4-6 weeks and then now my hair is limp and dry and barely curls. Maybe it was the aloe?

Now I am using Herbal Essence totally twisted mouse as I thought it would be good to switch products up but I can't get my hair back! Maybe it's the change to colder weather too?

My hair doesn't like protein but I thought maybe my hair needed some so I used a Joico K-pak protein treatment to no avail so then I thought maybe my hair is over condishioned so I went a day or 2 without condish (just water wash) to no avail. I tried the old faithful backing soda / ACV wash which normally brings my hair back to life but no avail either!!

I have had dry limp no curl hair for 2 weeks now!

Any suggestions?

Was so excited to read this thread last night I went out at lunch and put some flaxseeds (or linseeds as theyre called here) only cost 1.49 for a big bag of the darker ones and also bought the golden ones as wasnt sure which were best!
I got the recipe muddled up though, and did 1 cup of seeds to 2 cups water, (stupid memory!) and this is how much gel I got (in pics)

I dont know if that is a good amount compared to what other people get? There was a lot of gel left in the seeds but I couldnt get it out, its in the fridge now I dont think I'll try it tonight, prob in the morning.

At the moment Ive got an egg, avocado and coconut oil mask on at the moment, this is my first day CG - I'm really hoping this stuff rinses out!!

Discojam, try 4 dessertspoons to 1 pint of water. Drain your mix in a pop sock then you can squeeze the gel out and you get a better yield. You can get ankle length popsocks really cheap in Tesco or M&S - about 2 for 10.

VEO is also not a preservative. VEO is an antioxidant which helps keep oils from going rancid. If your FSG has oils in it, its good to add 1-2 drops VEO to keep the oils in it from going bad.

Grapefruit seed extract can be use as a preservative. It has no scent. You can then use a few drops of antiseptic EO for scent. Hope this helps.

But the truth was that I was actually losing moisture from my hair at a rapid rate because I have porous hair. There is a post on the general board called "spritz and condish". It was very informative in helping me to get my hair adequately moisturized. I posted pics there today. You can see that now my curls are plump and bouncy after doing the S&C for 2 weeks. Check it out. Many curlies have posted their results using S&C. FSG is super moisturizing but I don't think its enough to help hair that needs super hydration. I love FSG but it does not give me enough moisutre in the winter time. I have to use FSG and lots of LI. Lately I've only been using lots of LI. Hope this helps.

Whipped up a large batch of FSG tonight.......froze some and put some into a squeeze bottle. I changed my recipe up a bit this time...added some different oils. I didn't let the seeds boil as long as I usually do. My gel didn't come out as thick as I like but I'm going to use it anyway and see how I like it. I'm going to try it without a leave in first since I added coconut, shea and grapeseed oil and see how that works.

ETA: update...I went ahead and used the FSG with Shescentit coco leave in and it wasn't too much.......my hair turned out great! Lots of body! Curls are defined....I'm going to tweak the recipe a bit because I would like more clumping........I'm wondering if just boiling the flax longer, til it's thicker will help with that......

Ok I've got to try this again. Especially this winter. My hair is not happy with my current products, I'm actually looking better without gel but without the hold I'm really loosing my curl.
Hair type: 2a/b, medium to fine texture, medium to high porosity (I think!)
Routine: Occasionally wash with Lavender baby shampoo. CO wash with Garnier triple nutrition conditioner, use a nickel sized blob as a leave in, scrunch out a little water, scrunch in some aloe gel (FOTE), then scrunch in some Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (BRHG). Plop with a backwards turbie twist for 10 min - to overnight.
CG since 23 May 2009! (with some minor slips)
Ladies after you strain this and put it in a bowl, how do you get it in a plastic squeeze bottle, i mean because of how thick it is????? Im going to try this very soon!!
Low Poo: Mastey Traite, GTTT
Conditioner: GVP,
Leave Ins: KCKT, Shescentit LI
Styling: ISO Bouncy Cream, DOC, HETT, KCCC

Still trying to figure out what hair i have lol!!.

Wanting to try: Darcy's, KBB and Botticelli Botanicals.
I use a jug or sometimes a little funnel if its thick. If you do it while its still quite hot it will slop in easier lol (you know what I mean!)

First off I wanted to say that I love this gel! It works awesome for me but I definitely need a preservative to make it last longer. Are Epsom salts (Mag. Sulfate)enough to preserve it?
Fine, 3a/3b
Modified CG
Low Poo: TJ's TTT, ACV/beer Rinses once a month or so, Soap Bars once in a while, Carols Daughter Khoret Amen shampoo
Conditioner: AOHR, AOGPB, Suave Coconut, vo5 Kiwi, etc

HE gels, occasional hairspray, Garnier Fructis Curl shaping gel spray, FSG when I actually make it
Honey/AVG only in the summer

HG I fell into the craze and my hair is happy with Deva! No Poo, Angel, and one condish = awesome hair day.

Depends how long you expect it to last. I make a large batch and freeze four ounce jars of it. I only use it once a week, or it doesn't work for me. Mine has a lot of ingredients to help it keep longer, so it lasts a few weeks. Without those ingredients, it goes bad after about four days out of the refrigerator.

Thank you kathymack! I was hoping to get about 2 weeks at least out of it, so I might just put it in the fridge to be on the safe side. I appreciate the help! I can't wait to whip up my next batch

My hair is not a fan of honey in these dews - would agave act the same way? I need something for hold but don't want to dry my curls out further.

Ok i'm loving FSG in the winter. I just have to use a lot of it but it seems to be helping my hair retain it's moisture in the windy dry winter. I also have tried using a lot of it. I always thought that would weigh the curls down but it seems to be working really well right now. How do you freeze this stuff and how do you defrost it for use later? What do you freeze it in? I think I'm going to stock up during vacation so I don't have to worry about making later.

when I freeze it I freeze before I add all the oils etc so am freezing just the basic flax part of the recipe. I put it in ziplock bags and then you can thaw these out by putting in a bowl of warm water to help thaw or just leaving till they do it on their own. Then I add in the oils etc HTH

I freeze them in empty 4 oz prescription bottles with the "child proof" caps. I add everything but SeaMollient (can't freeze that.) I defrost by sitting on the counter.
