I freeze mine as well with everything in it (except seamollient) and I've had no problems after it thaws.

Thanks so much! I'll have to stock up. What is SeaEmolliant?

An algae extract. If you seach, under the right spelling (SeaMollient) you should find lots of information.

Thanks a bunch! I'm going to have to try that and aloe vera gel. I've heard good things about both.

Hey guys.... I wanted to try making this for the sole reason that it only has two ingredients, and I can't figure out how to tell what my hair likes if all my products have tons of ingredients!! I thought maybe adding things in one at a time I'd actually have a shot though.
Anyway, I went to Trader Joe's looking for whole flax seeds and all they had were golden roasted flax seeds. They don't look like they're honey roasted or flavored or anything, just roasted but... is this okay? Will this work for FSG?
ALSO... I saw that FSG makes your hair take a lot longer to dry. How much longer percentage wise? Twice as long? 1.5 times as long? My hair is now just past my shoulders and still taking 3 hours to dry IF I scrunch a good amount of water out, and when it was 6 inches longer (maybe armpit length?) it could take 8 hours to dry. It holds onto water for a long time. So I want to know what I'd be in for here....
Edit: Ack! No one told me it tasted so good! At 45 calories a tablespoon, flax seed is extremely high calorie. Oh dear. I'll have to keep it in the cupboard so I don't see it every day and am not tempted. I guess it'd be okay to eat in my yogurt or something, just not alone.

I got the golden roasted without even realizing it. (just went and checked the package) So I know it works fine for the gel. I didn't notice a huge difference in drying time with or without the FSG.

FSG made with ground flax is impossible to strain--and it's difficult under any circumstance. It's not worth it. It may be high calorically, but it's got Omega 3 or 6--which is really good for you.

I just wanted to share pictures of a really good hair day with FSG. I love it!

A little frizz, but I don't mind it too much. Yay for FSG!

I just got gel covered seeds. Maybe 2 oz of gel. Everything else was a big blog in the middle of the strainer. Ew. Did I cook it too long? B/c the small amount of product that I did get is egg white consistency.

I'm pretty sure you did cook it too long. The same thing happened to me when I started making FSG. What are you using to strain it?

mmarrero, it does sound like you may have cooked it too long. I've had the best results just doing a slow boil for 5 or 6 minutes instead of 10.
zcurlygirl, absolutely beautiful hair! Are you adding anything special to your fsg, or just keeping it basic? Are you using quite a bit, over a leave-in...?

Thank you so much! This time around I added 1/4 tsp. of epsom salts to the FSG. I really used a lot; probably 3 or 4 medium puddles to scrunch in over my leave-in. I'm looking to try to find more additives though...

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how can you tell when your FSG has gone bad? Does it smell "sour," lose it's texture, or turn a funny color?
I made a small batch about 4 days ago and have been storing it in the fridge. The only thing I added to it were a few drops of lavender EO. I just want to make sure I can tell when it's not ok to use.
So far I'm loving what it's doing to my hair!

I think it will smell funny. (I haven't had it happen to me but read it).

Mine smelled off at about 6-7 days after refrigeration and less in my bathroom. Just a dramatic change from the smell it had fresh. I make big batches now and freeze what I wont use in a week. Then I defrost a new batch each Sunday when I do my deep treatment.
I just actually made a new batch and got creative this time. I added honey and aloe vera gel to the flax seed gel right after I strained my seeds. Then I added my EO's. So far it's seeming to have good hold but I've only had it on for about an hour. But it gave great defination!

Just thinking about additive options, has anyone ever tried adding olive oil to theirs? I feel like if you put in just a bit (obviously overdoing it would be disastrous) it would up the shine/moisture factor even more. Same thing with coconut oil or something like that.

hoo boy.
well I added a wee bit of jojoba to mine but it was more than my newly 2bish hair could take. I only added .5 oz of jojoba to 1.5 oz aloe, then added the aloe to one batch that started out as 8 oz before heating.
It relaxed my curl noticeably. FSG with aloe and EO for fragrance is all I need for good curl definition.
I think it kind of over-conditioned my hair and made it slick-ish.

IMHO>>Sometimes the original is the best!. Ive noticed its a flop,or looser curls, with any oils added.I think honey/ agave,mag.sulfate.the fsg ,maybe seamollient(still experimenting) are the definite enhancers. I add pinch citric acid, antiseptic EO, and grapefruit seed extract. Lasts weeks in fridge.Cant decide if I like it better with aloe vera or not, it might actually elongate my curls, and Im looking for tighter!
