Default Lovin' It

I made my first batch of FSG from BB's recipe a few days ago. I am SOOOOO happy I tried it! I have lots of fragrance allergies & hate that most manufacturers load their products up with them. It severely limits what products I can use. FSG has been a wonderful discovery for me.

Yes, it does feel an awful lot like snot, but it does a fantastic job and only has a slight nutty scent. I still haven't gotten a hang of how much to use yet but I'm working on it. My baby fine hair frizzes easily & the humidity in TX has been off the charts lately which is making it a little more of a challenge.

I've even had decent 2nd day hair with a bit of leave in & water in a spray bottle. My hair is also noticeably softer! Thank you BB for sharing this!

This stuff is AMAZING! Seriously. I have 3rd day hair.. which has like NEVER happened ... EVER. With my old gel, I rarely even got 2nd day hair. *holds FSG tight* Thanks for sharing your recipe, BB!

Also, does anyone know where the best (and cheapest) place to buy EOs online is? I'm using lavender essential oil now but I'd like to try some other scents

I like these sites:
wholesalesuppliesplus.com
thesage.com
fromnaturewithlove.com (a little more expensive)

I would shop around, they all have different prices on the same EOs.

they also have frangrance oils that you could try too! BTW an ounce or less would be plenty if you are only using and EO for FSG. I would also recommend picking up some plastic pipettes from one of the websites too - most of the EOs don't come with droppers. Or you can pick up a medicine dropper at a pharmacy (my husband scored some on clearance at CVS for me recently)

I used BB's recipe as a base for homemade KCCC (jojoba gel), because my hair hates aloe. After straining the flax gel, I added 2 teaspoons jojoba oil, 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin, and 1/4 teaspoon methylcellulose (plant based thickener). The methylcellulose clumped and would not mix with a whisk, so I broke out the hand blender and that worked great to blend everything together.

I used the jojoba gel on freshly washed hair and really like it. It's not quite the same as KCCC but makes for a decent substitute.

Pros: great frizz reduction, adds moisture
Cons: not enough hold

I'll try using a hard hold gel over this for more hold. I think the super soaker method would work great here too.

I finally got around to making some of this with BB's recipe, after soaking the flax seeds for ~2 hours.

It's awesome! The texture is kinda snotty and gooey and some other fluids but I kind of like it. It's like Gak. But it spreads through my thick hair easily, and I don't have to use toooo much to get everything covered. The plain FSG does have a bit of a nutty scent, but it doesn't linger on my hair.

The hold is kind of light, but I like that. I HATE the crunchiness of all the store bought gels I've tried, and this scrunches out with no problems. It also feels a bit moisturizing. I think my next batch I'm gonna try boiling it with some marshmallow root as well for more extra gooey moisture.

Update: I tried my jojoba/flaxseed gel again, but without using a leave-in conditioner under it. This time my waves were better defined, so I may not need another gel for hold after all. I think I was just overconditioned when I tried it before.

I finally took the plunge, and made my very first batches of FSG last night

1st: I think I boiled it too long - never foamed and didn't strain at.all! Threw out (in retrospect, could have used the seeds again, but oh well!)

2nd: boiled less time, got a couple of oz at best...right consistency and color

3rd: reused the seeds from the 2nd try...added more water, a pinch of mag sulf, and boiled again...only let boil for 2 mins...strained a LOT better and got much, much more!

I used the 2nd batch this morning, and so far am LOVING how shiny it makes my hair, and how little frizz I have

I froze the seeds/mass from the 2nd/3rd batches, and will soak them overnight to defrost next time, and see how that does...I love playing "mad scientist," as my hubby puts it

Hey curlies
So I've been wondering if FSG would be good for the summer? What have your experiences been using this in the hot, humid months? thank youu<3

Default All Hail BB!!!

First and foremost, thank you BB! I made my first batch of FSG yesterday after running out of gel a couple of days ago and couldn't afford to buy decent hair gel... Anywho... I was on NC as usual and read up on different gels and pos alternatives for my miffed tresses and came across this thread. I decided to give it a try. Sure why the hell not. OMG! At first I was sure what to expect from the mass of snot I just created in my kitchen and was a little relunctant to put said snot in my hair. I slathered it on and brush it through, styled as usual sans the slew of hair products, and HOLY CRAP!!! My hair is flippin amazazing! Its sooo shiny and bouncy and...and...cooool! Lol! I have been in an ugly funk due to a botched, messed up, un godly hair cut and really wanted to shave my head and start anew. Not anymore! Thank you again BB! I appreciate all that you do for yourself and the rest of us curly headed goddesses! Thank you!

Quick (maybe stupid lol) question -- I put 1/2tsp sea salt in my last batch (which has been working awesomely) every time I use it tho I taste salt in my mouth after! Anyone know if there is a reason I'm tasting it? its kinda driving me nuts bc I dont know how its getting in my mouth lmfao

Default An Ode to FSG :)

I too must sing the praises of Flax Seed Gel.
It's oh-so-goopy and snotty-slimy...
Yet it clumps my coils into soft submittal.

Flax Seed Gel, I think I love you.

...I am a recent convert to FSG, and it has received instant holy grail status in my book!
I love that I can tweak it with different scents and essential oils, add honey/glycerin for extra moisture, or throw in some aloe or whatever I please.

If any other curly girl is hesitant to try it- just go for it! You might find something you really love!

Mine was getting too messy with all of the gloopy yummy-ness. So, I started to put it in a spritzer bottle, and that somewhat relatively helps to control where it ends up in my hair. Might control the salty flavor too?

This week I made what may be my best batch of flax gel yet! too soon to tell how it will perform over time, but I like it so far.

I made the flax gel following BB's method with:

2 cups distilled water
1/2 cup golden flaxseed
handful of dried hibiscus flowers

After straining the gel, I added 1 teaspoon jojoba oil, 1 teaspoon argan oil, 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin, 1/2 teaspoon agave nectar, 2 oz seamollient, and 1/4 teaspoon optiphen (preservative). Once the gel cooled to room temperature, I poured it into an 8 oz bottle with a flip top cap and put it in the refrigerator. Even with the preservative, I don't feel quite safe leaving a homemade mixture in the bathroom.

::Rant begin::

Okay, I tried to make this stuff and wasted 2 batches.

First batch I think I cooked too long. Put it in the strainer and about a teaspoon of gel came through. Threw it into a bigger strainer (sort of a spaghetti strainer) .. absolutely nothing came through. Had a nice big glob of seeds. Threw it back in the pan to heat up again .. put it in the bigger strainer .. nada, nothing, zip came through. Tried pushing it through with a spoon .. still nothing.

Threw that batch out. Tried another and let it cook just until it was a thin gel. Put it in a colander and, of course, alot of seeds came through before the gel plugged up the holes. Arg!!!

Threw the seeds - again surround in a nice gel - away. Out of two batches I got about 2 tablespoons of gel.

I'm 52 freaking years old, girls, why can't I get this stuff to go through the strainer??? I went through 3 strainers, all different sizes, and 4 bowls. Okay, age doesn't matter, but just browsing thru this thread, I'm only once of a couple that had this problem and I should know how to do this (hand me some cheese with my whine please ).

::Rant over::

I'm going to try half the regular recipe and see if I can get this to work.

Edited to add: Okay, made a half batch. Got more gel this time, but it's brown, not clear. Thick, but brown. Somebody please tell me it took a few tries at this to get the boiling time right and the straining right. I think half the gel or more is still holding the seeds together and won't strain through. ::sigh::

Okay, so after going back and doing more reading, I see sometimes it does take a few times to get it right.

I'm also seeing maybe the soaking overnight method straining in the morning is right up my alley.

Don't let yourself get too frustrated. It sounds like you're just boiling it too long. Bring it to a boil and as soon as a little white foam forms on the top it's probably time to strain. It will thicken as it cools.

I have dip my wooden spoon in it and when I pull it out and a thin "string" of gel drips off -- it's ready!

Thanks, mpgirl, I do remember that stage and I went passed that. I had a feeling I'd cooked it too long. I hate that I threw both batches away when I did more reading and saw where you could use them again and add some water!

I've got some seeds soaking in water now.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I have been using jelly bag to strain the FSG and no matter how thick/thin I make it, it just flow through.

Love it BTW and on my 4 batch now..
