made some with marsh mallow & calendula leaf & added avocado & castor oil and a lil bit of silk protein powder with optiphen as a preservative. I made it thinner( more of a serum texture) on accident, but it felt pretty nice under my butter mix. hopefully it wil help a tad with the frizz ive been having lately due to a weird hair texture change.

I made my first batch of fsg tonight seeing as how so many people can't stop talking about it and I see it almost everyone's siggies lol. The only tweak I made in it was a wee bit of agave nectar and some sweet orange EO.
OMG best hair ever! I used a bunch over some giovanni's direct leave-in and after it dried and I scrunched my hair felt so soft! Unbelieveable I'm in <3
Thanks guys

Does anyone know if FSG has protein in it? I was reading the UK curly thread about it and they were talking about it having protein.
Does anyone who is protein sensitive use it regularly with non bad affects?

I'm not sure about whether or not flax contains natural proteins. However, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way of adding protein, as it seems impossible to give my hair too much.
While I'm on the topic, does anyone have advice about preservatives? I've been using citric acid, but it doesn't seem to be preserving it any longer than without. Am I not adding enough (using about 1/2 tsp per 6 oz batch of FSG)? Is grapefruit seed extract better? Thoughts and ideas? (:

I like to add hydrolyzed proteins to my FSG. Here are few good websites that sell them.
http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/rawingredients.html
http://www.theherbarie.com/
http://www.lotioncrafter.com/
These websites also sell preservatives that can be added to FSG. If you choose to use them, please read up on how to use them safely. Very small amounts are used! I use Liquid Germall Plus in mine at .5%.
I've never used grapefruit seed extract, so I can't offer advise on that. I do use citric acid in mine, but just a pinch to adjust the pH. Citric acid is not enough of a preservative to keep nasty stuff from growing in your gel on its own. Keep you FSG in the fridge until you decide if you want to try a stronger preservative.

Thank you! That is so helpful! Do you have a preference of the type of protein? I haven't experimented enough to know what kind my hair likes, just that it needs ridiculous amounts of it. I'm not sure what the difference is between all of them.
I generally store my FSG in the fridge, but even so it lasts a week, two tops, before it starts smelling funny. I don't mind storing it... I just want to find a way to make it last longer in there (:

I like to use the silk amino acids and the soy in mine. I also add panthenol pro-vitamin B5.
Another good site for ingredients is
http://www.makingcosmetics.com/
Two weeks is about right for storing FSG in the fridge. If you find you cant finish up your batch within two weeks, some of the ladies here freeze portions of theirs. I haven't personally tried that. My daughter also uses my FSG so we go through the stuff pretty fast. But, if I was going to freeze some I'd probably freeze it before I added my extras. Just plain gel with mag sulfate. Then add my extras to the defrosted gel when I was ready to use that next batch.

Yay!
So I just made my first couple of batches of FSG and I love it! My golden snot is great!
But I was wondering...is it also beneficial to hair to apply the gel? I know the oil is good when taken internally, so I was just wondering. Either way, this is def a HG!!

I just made my first every batch of FSG. My first attempt was awful, and I made it waaaay to thick and couldn't strain it at all. The second batch was just right, pretty runny, but with some hold.
Once it was strained I added a bit of honey (about 1/2 tsp) and a bit of coconut oil (about 1/2 tsp).
I don't know what I've done wrong but my hair really didn't like the FSG. Its gone really stringy and horrible, I've lost all my clumps, and after about 1/2 the day I've got loads of frizz This was probably my worst hair day as a curly girly. It actually looks pretty producty aswell!
I'm not going to give up I wanna keep trying until I get it right, but I was a bit sad it wasn't the miracle product I had been hoping for.
Maybe I should of tried it without any additions to start with. Hmmmm.... any thoughts?
(one thing I will say is that although my hair looks terrible, it felt reeeeeeeally really soft)

I agree that it's best to try the FSG straight up first. That way you know what it does for your hair on its own.
My personal experience has been that if I just use 3 tablespoons of seeds to 1 to 1 1/2 cup of water, straining is easier. There aren't as many seeds to clog the strainer. And my hair soaks up the thick FSG, giving great results.
FWIW, I've never felt the need to add honey or oil, but do add a scant pinch of epsom salts, and a glob of AVG. We're all different, and so is our hair.

Some grocery stores carry it, Whole Foods, health food stores. Look where they carry grains or flours. Make sure you get regular whole seeds. Not roasted or flax seed meal.

I buy my flaxseeds in the bulk foods aisle of my local supermarket. I've also noticed them at GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe.

what does this mean?! I've seen this a few times now on the boards now. Does that mean a cyber-stalker edited your post or what?

not this time
So, I successfully made a double batch of this stuff today. I went by BB's directions and added a tb of avg and a few drops of apricot oil. I decided to go ahead and reuse the seeds and made my 2nd batch the same way. I guess it turned out the way it was supposed to, totally feeling the snot vibe!! Ick- LOL!! So anyway, I let it cool then cowashed and loaded this stuff into my hair like nobody's business, I mean I must have used a half cup in my almost bsl hair so I'm sure that had to have been enough. It has done nothing good for my hair. I scrunched a few times after the application then plopped while I made dinner, maybe an hour or so. My 2b/c hair is limp and frizzy!!! I really really want to like this stuff after reading all of the raving about it and am soooooo sad =( ! I have a little over half cup left so I know I'll give it another try but after that I'll not bother with the mess of it if I still don't like it. How disappointing !!! Might I mention that my hair is not 100% dry yet, but is dry enough that I can't imagine any magic happening.
