No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE!

Like Tree35Likes

I'm loving FSG right now that the weather is cooler. It's made my hair a little limp becuase it's so moisturizing but the hold is good and no frizz. I add avg, KBB hair oil (the scent is an added bonus), and agave nectar. Then I shake, shake, shake to mix it all together.

This not a gel I would try in high dews or warmer temps. Frizz and limp hair, I fear, would be an issue.

ETA: I must also admit I've been pairing this Kinky Curly Spiral Spritz for added definition and it gives me clumps. It's a watery, light curl booster. FSG alone is too moisturizing. SS first and then FSG on top.

I am madly in love with FSG from the first time I made it! My first batches I made with no additives and it worked wonders. I then started adding honey, which was also great at first, but eventually it seemed to contribute to over-moisturization. My current recipe is 1/4 tsp epsom salts in the boiling water, and about 1/2 tbsp honey mixed in after straining, and it is PERFECT. I get great curl, shine, and hold with only those two ingredients. I think the only things I want to add are an essential oil (seriously, the epsom salts seemed to make it smell pretty bad), and maybe a light preservative. I keep it in the fridge most of the time, but sometimes I have to carry it with me when I spend the night at my boyfriend's place, and I'm always worried that it will go bad en route. But otherwise, FSG is my HG! I get more compliments now than ever before!
got to love the hg out of my fsg!

These people must live where there is an average dew point of 1 ... I can't imagine this gel being even remotely effective in places like Florida with using less than what BB recommends.
Has anyone tried using shea butter or cacao butter in FSG? Would it be too heavy?
@ per simmon I have not tried either shea or cocoa butter for my FSG but then again those products are really too heavy and greasy for my hair. I would say to give it a try.

This is awesome! I used your recipe and it worked great! I did NOT leave it boiling directly on the burner the whole time, though...It was trying to boil over (I hate electric stoves!)

Anyway...I was going to say I used the knee high suggestion for straining and it was SUPER easy. I put the hose inside of a measuring cup and then put the top of the hose over the top of the cup so that I didn't have to hold it there. Then I sat that in my sink and poured the mixture straight in. No mess. No problem!

Then I just grabbed the top of the hose and pulled it out of the cup leaving only the gel!

I think the only thing I'm going to add to it is Clove and Sweet Orange EO. I'm excited to use it in the morning!!
I will once I get the hang of it! Used it for the first time this morning and it has a LOT of hold...not used to the wet hair look (or my hair not being a fro!)

I didn't have any conditioner I could use that didn't have silicone in it. I went to Walmart today to get the Suave Naturals, but a few of the ingredients ended in -one...is it really silicone free? I may just go to Sally's tonight and get the conditioning balm. I went a little nuts at the store yesterday and my "cheap" gel ingredients cost just under $30! ha...I don't know how cheap that really is...I did buy quite a bit of flax seed though because I didn't want to have to go back to the store if it didn't work. I'm going to make more batches tonight and freeze it all.

I used the 1/4 cup seeds to 1 cup water ratio, and I think I heated my first batch too long because hardly any strained through. Also my strainer was really small and had very fine mesh, so that may have contributed to it cooling down too much before it could all go through.

So I made another batch, which I didn't heat for quite as long, plus I found a much bigger and not-quite-as-fine strainer which allowed much more liquid to pass through (and nary a seed!). It seemed a bit watery but I mixed it with the first batch with a whisk and a bit of jojoba oil and lavender EO. I poured it through a funnel into a little squeeze bottle (with the remainder in a Tupperware container) which is waiting in the fridge for me to try tomorrow morning. I'm so excited!

Question: I only had a plastic bowl on hand instead of a metal or glass bowl... and when I washed it out, it still smelled pretty strongly of the lavender EO I whipped into the FSG... do you think that will fade once it dries out? The bowl should still be safe for food purposes, right? I don't know why this is making me so paranoid, haha.
I made a fresh batch last night and it turned out real nice. I used only the golden flax seeds this time, I usually mix them with the brown or do just brown. I will only buy golden seeds from now on. I was surprised at how much easier these were to strain. This batch was just a basic recipe and I think it will work wonderfully. My previous batches, I've been experimenting with and adding more and more extras to and found it didn't work for me as well. Back to the basics for me . This batch seemed the perfect consistency as well. I can't wait to use it!

I'm hoping so!! So far I really like the results and I soaked my seeds ahead of time which really made them sticky before I even started heating them!
i just made a whole load, maybe 4 bottle so fit and put them in the freezer woop woop. It keeps just fine in the freezer and that way i can do huge batches then grab a frozen one to thaw then add all the oils and extras after. yay

I made a batch of this about two months ago but couldn't bring myself to use it because it's so... boogery. LOL. I added preservatives to it so it's still good and this week I started using it to slick down my edges.

I'm struggling with the best way to apply it. If I dip my fingers in it, it just slips right off my fingers. I literally have to reach in there and pinch it and hurry up and glob it on my hair. Is my consistency off a little? How are you ladies applying it?
Finally 100% natural. I'm embracing my curls.

That's the consistency of my FSG also. I pour out a palmful, sometimes having to cut it against the edge of the container, then scrunch it into my hair upside down. It usually takes two palmfuls to cover all my hair, which just soaks it up. After a few minutes, my hair just feels wet, and I scrunch out excess water with a towel (also upside down), then scrunch with just my hands. The results are amazing!
Peace,
Morgan
