No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE!

Like Tree33Likes

Made my first batch with regular flax seeds today. Made one batch with golden seeds that didn't turn out very well, then another that I loved. But only Publix carries those, and it's the Publix in the next town, which is now probably a 30+ minute drive from the apartment I'm in. So I got the regular ones at Target. I made about 8 ounces, and I've got 6 ounce bottles. So I put 1/2tsp agave nectar in the full 8oz, then put 1/8tsp magnesium citrate (experimentally using in place of mag sulfate) in the ~2oz of overflow. So...we shall see!

Ok so I have my first batch in the kitchen cooling. And yeah like everyone else I'm trying to figure out how to get past the consistency part.
But after reading through more than half of the 26 pages of this post I have a question. What is it in Rockin Ringlets that weighs hair down?
I just discovered that I'm protein sensitive and my hair will run very dry if I use protein. When I bought the RR I just figured my hair was dry. So I chose the RR over the Gelebration Spray. When I tried the RR I was good until my hair dried and then it just went flat. The GS doesn't do much for me.
So now that I'm using protein free shampoo and conditioner (every other day)my hair is happier naked. And now I want to experiment with this FSG I'm trying to avoid whatever is in the RR that weighed my hair down. Maybe I didn't use enough of it? Or could it be the MagSulf or the glycerin or Jojoba Oil?

Is this stuff safe for color treated hair? I have brown 2b hair and I cover up the highlights I had 2 years ago, I normally dye my hair only every 9-10 months and I hate dying it because it's so damaging. I'm afraid to use normal gel because it might take the color out of my hair, but I loveeeeeeeee the way my hair looks when I use mousse/gel to enhance my waves. I also don't like to use normal gels because it makes my hair sticky and crunchy. Will this gel make my waves feel soft, not sticky?

much appreciated
What can you add that acts as a preservative?
It's been ages since I made this stuff and I have a question. Is it supposed to have small particles of the seeds in the strained mix? Or, is the strainer not fine enough? I thought it was but my batch has a lot of "things" in it. Is this normal, or is it supposed to be perfectly clear of any stuff?

Thanks!!

Tried this recipe a few days ago....love how my hair turned out ! I have been doing the no poo thingy for about 2 months and it has done wonders for my hair. I have been looking for something to use as a gel that was natural and came across the flax seed idea. The first batch was too cooked I think...I couldn't really separate the seed from the gel. But the second batch turned out perfect. Thanks for the tips !
From reading this thread, I think I am the only one who truly hates FSG! I am so frustrated with it. I've tried it many different ways, but it always seems like it's a one hit wonder. Maybe it has something to do with a satiation issue, but I so want this to work. Every time after repeated use, my hair just does weird things. The first time I use it, I love it. My hair is soft and shiny and scrunches out so nice and is beautifully curly. But from the second time on, it just progressively gets more stringy and doesn't curl right and gets all funky. If I make some again, I will try rotating it out with my HG EcoStyler in case it is satiation, (but I've never had that issue with my hair really -- and satiation after one use seems a little extreme) but this stuff seems to kill my hair and my curls. It's kinda frustrating because I totally enjoy using an all natural hair gel! Anyone else have this problem?? Okay, I'm done with my rant.

On the bright side, my FSG works even better the one time it does work when I add cornstarch as a thickener! I love the crunch and hold it adds, but it still scrunches out nice. I feel like FSG isn't that special at all when I don't add that in -- it makes it awesome for that 1st use.

I made FSG for the first time this week and I absolutely love it. My hair is soft and moisturized
and I noticed less shrinkage.

I used 1/4 cup seeds to 2 cups of water. Boiled 10 minutes. Strained by draping panty hose over a container then pushing excess gel out with tongs. Added vitamin e, rosemary, lavander and castor oil. Put in my hair over TJ Nourish and Spa mixed with Aloe vera juice.

I tried this for the first time last week and loved it. I bought the Flax seeds like 2 months ago but only just got around, to it now.

I did the same, used 2 c water, but I used 1/2c seeds. I got great yield, and nice thick gel. I mean, for FSG it was thick, lol. It's always gonna be thin consistency I think, but mine was a little thicker than egg whites.
I added honey, a little bit of epsom salt, a little bit of glycerin, coconut oil (which gave me awesome shine), and some lavender EO for scent. The honey is a fabulous curl enhancer. Along with the coconut oil, it moisturizes nicely too. I can't believe how shiny my hair is; next time I may up the coconut oil a smidge - I added about a tablespoon. My hair loves oil so I don't think it'll hurt.

I love how cheap this is to make. I bought both the epsom salt and the glycerin at the dollar store. I've had the lavender for awhile, and it only cost me like $5 at the health food store. Essential oils last, you only use a couple drops. And honey isn't going to break the bank. Coconut oil isn't that expensive either, I paid $7 for a jar that will last awhile too (and I cook with it too, lol).

So glad my first try turned out well. I may get some orange essential oil to add for fragrance next time, I like citrus.

I'm going to try okra gel next!
That's me with FSG as my styler!!

Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny
Is there FSG you can just buy somewhere? I'm not a good cook and have no idea about preservatives.
You can buy some here Natural healthy haircare for every hair by BotticelliBotanicals Hers is very good or Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets is FSG.

Made this today! I only used the seeds and water because that's all I had. I made three batches (one right after the other) then put my seeds in the fridge - we will see if I can get any more out of them or not. Can't wait to try the gel out tonight! What can you put in the gel to preserve it so you don't have to keep it in the fridge?
So I've finally got my basic FSG recipe down, but I'm wanting to try a few things with it, and also want to preserve it, so I'm hoping that a few curlies on here who have perfected this art will chime in.

1. I've been thinking about using aloe vera juice in my FSG; I know people add it (or aloe vera gel), but I'm wondering if anyone has boiled the flax seeds in aloe vera juice rather than water (or a 50/50 mix of aloe juice and water). Would boiling the aloe juice cause any issues?

2. I'm wanting to preserve my FSG so I don't have to refrigerate as much. I've heard potassium sorbate is good, but I'm not sure how much to use per batch? Also, if I'm adding aloe juice and vitamin e, is another preservative necessary.

3. I'm also considering adding citric acid as a ph balancer, but again, not sure how much? Also, if there is citric acid in the aloe juice, is more necessary?

4. I've also heard of using fruit pectin to make a gel; wondering if anyone has used this in FSG as a thickener and how that worked?

TIA!!

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!
