Amazing face wash routine!

Like Tree3Likes

I have always suffered from moderate acne. And not just whiteheads, I had blackheads and the cystic pimples that hurt, always worse during my "time of the month". To add to that I suffer from eczema and it is on my cheeks. I have tried EVERYTHING. Proactive, Murad, Neutrogena, Clearasil, Aveeno, prescription medication, everything ever advertised, and NOTHING made a difference. I just kind of made peace with my bad skin.

A few months ago my mom started raving about this all-natural skin care routine that her and her friends were using. It was supposed to firm up your skin and even it out. It was taken from a book called "Beauty Secrets from the Bible". Her skin was looking great and, even though I figured I didn't need the same stuff for my 20's acne-prone skin as her 50's skin, I asked her what she was using. When she mentioned honey and olive oil I immediately dismissed it for myself. I looked at her and said "You want me to put honey and EVOO on my oily, acne prone face? Ya right." I thought for sure it would make me break out.

Right after New Year's I ran out of my $30 a bottle face wash and after using honey and olive oil in my hair with great results (thanks to all you on these boards) I decided it couldn't hurt. So my mom showed me what she used and how to do it. I started and by the first week I saw a HUGE difference in my skin. My eczema was getting better and I hadn't gotten even one new pimple. The ones I already had went away so fast and easy. I was shocked but still skeptical. I was waiting for the true test...my period. When it finally came I got 1 pimple. Not the typical 6 or more but 1. I can't believe what this has done for me. I wish I had before and after pics to show. The pimples I am getting now go away in a day and never get irritated but best of all I haven't gotten ANY cystic pimples. Amazing. Now that I am done rambling here is the recipe and routine. It is a bit modified from the book.

Blend equal parts dry oatmeal, dried goat's milk (I got mine at the local health foods store as my TJ didn't carry it), and flax seeds. Put in a jar with a lid.

Put a small amount of raw honey (regular honey was called for in the book but all my mom's friends had better experience with the raw) in a small container ex: an empty lip gloss pot w/lid.

Put VitaminE oil (the recipe calls for EVOO but I hate the smell and I needed the healing of the VitaminE) in an oil container with a stopper. I found mine for cheap at Ross.

Buy Rosewater in a spray bottle. They have it at TJ and Whole Foods.

Now you are ready...

Put on a headband so you don't get food in your hair.

Put a scoop of the dry mixture in your palm. Add a little water to make a wet paste. Apply all over your face and let it sit for about 5 minutes or until it feels like it has tightened up. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

Spritz face with rosewater.

Put a tiny amount of honey (about a fingertip) in your palm, spray it with rosewater and rub in your palms to "melt" it. Apply all over your face.

Spritz again with rosewater.

Put tiny dabs of oil on your face (about 3 or 4) and rub in all over to moisturize.

After that I spritz again but you don't have to. It does feel oily for a few minutes but it "sinks" in. I do the whole routine once a day and do a quick wash with the dry mix if I feel like I need to wash my face again. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it goes so fast and considering all the scrunching, plopping, etc. we do to our hair, it's easy to work the face routine in. Just try it. You probably have most of the ingredients at home already. It has changed my life. I'll try to update with a pic of the stuff in jars on my counter. Hopefully some of you will love this as much as I do. Oh and sorry this post was so long. I have debated on wether to post this because of the length but It's official...I HAD to share my new love.

This looks interesting, Jess. Thanks for sharing. The honey part-it looks like you leave it on the skin and just spritz-no rinsing? I'm thinking of trying the dry part with buttermilk powder instead of goat's milk since I have it on hand along with flax seeds. Are the flax seeds ground or whole? I think camellia oil will work for me rather than evoo-proven to break me out already, lol...so glad it's working for you and your mom
I used the same flax seeds I make FSG from. You just put the flax seeds, oatmeal, and powdered milk in a food processor (I used the Magic Bullet) and blend until smooth. The honey stays on, no rinsing just spritzed, so start with a teeny amount until you find how much you can use without getting sticky. It all feels very weird the first few times but stick it out. It is so worth it. Let me know how it works out for you.

I have got to try this. I currently use the oil cleansing method and this sounds like an extension of that. Thank you for the great post.

Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny

I use Bare Minerals foundation as it's the only thing that doesn't break me out. I do have to wait about 10 min after I put the oil on before I can apply my foundation or it gets a little "cakey" but otherwise I haven't had a problem.

Your skin - and hair looks great! I might have to try this - my skin is really bad right now. I was doing OCM but it made me break out after a few weeks. I went back to proactiv, but it dries out my skin. I just ordered Avalon Organics Vitamin C cleanser & moisturizer, so I am hoping that will work too. The vit-E, goat milk and rosewater in your ingredients sound really good though.

Is the dry mixture a scrub or a mask?

It's kind of both. When you add a little water to it in your hand it becomes like a gentle scrub that you just rub all over your face. Then when it sits on your face for a few minutes it will start to tighten up like a mask. And when you rinse it off it becomes like a scrub again. I kind of feel like I'm giving myself a mini facial every day. Oh I forgot to add that you'll want to put a headband and/or tie your hair back so you don't get the mixture in it. I usually wash when I'm plopping so my hair is back.

Dear Jess
How do you get your hair so shiny, I love your hair. Also How do you know if your hair is sensitive to protiens, oils, etc. Is there some sort of reaction I should be looking for?

I don't really know how to explain protein sensitivities, you could do a search of the general discussion board as there are many curlies who can. Here's what was going on with my hair when I figured it out. It was stringy, straw-like, dry even though I was condish and DT, and very dull. With all the talk of protein I figured I'd try cutting it out. I immediately saw a difference. As far as oils I haven't experimented too much...I'm loving coconut oil right now though. What products are you using?

Interesting routine! Thanks for posting it.
I already cleanse with oils and use a baking soda scrub so this will just add a couple ingredients, which I will pick up at the store maybe tonight.
I love using inexpensive, natural products so it's certainly worth a try!

I am wondering if the OCM is breaking out my skin a bit...no real eruption but not sure if I like it again.

It actually sounds like the recipe for an oatmeal wash I read about on the skincare forum I frequent. It's great to calm and soothe irritated skin.

Also, honey is a natural source of hydrogen peroxide so it should help kill any bacteria on the skin surface. Just an FYI, if you like raw honey, manuka honey is really great for the skin.

The rosewater and Vit E sound great, too. I use other oils (currently a blend of pomegranate and hazelnut) for moisture.

It's great that something so simple and natural is working for you!

Finally bought everything.. except for the goat milk powder... couldn't find that anywhere.. only the nanny's stuff.. that costs like 18 euro. :S..

So i made a oatmeal/flax seed combination, that seems ok too..

Didn't see any big differences but it feels nice and refreshing in the morning.. and at the end of a working day *like now!* my face isn't dry as usual..

So i like it so far!
