Homemade No-poo and One-C

Hi Everyone!

I thought I'd post these here because they've been working wonderfully for me!

Generic No Poo

1/4 of a cup of grape seed oil
2 or more cups (dpending on how thin or thick you like your Co to be) of water
three tablespoons emulsifier (I get mine from the herbarie.com)

what to do:

in a double boiler heat the grape seed oil and emulsifier until the emulsifier has melted.
Heat water in a teakettle until boiling
add boiling water to oil mixture while stirring with a handheld blender or a wooden spoon.
The mixture should turn white immediately.
Let cool, and add preservative (I also get this at the herbarie) and essential oils/fragrance oils.

Generic One-C

Exactly the same process, just substitute oilive oil and vegetable glyercin for the grape seed oil. Since everyone's hair is diff, i think you'll need to play around with the proportions of oil and the veg glycerin here, but I know my hair prefers them in about equal amounts. I like 1/2 cup of olive oil and 1/2 cup glycerin, then add about 2 1/2 cups water.

I hope I'm not leaving anything out! Let me know if you have questions. The nice thing about my recipes is you can adjust them to your own needs. For me, that's no cones, proteins, artificial conditioning agents, ect!

Happy Cooking!

Any ideas on where I could get these ingredients?

TIA

Delma,

You should be able to get olive oil and grape seed oil at the grocery. I get vegetable glycerin at whole foods, or any other health food shop, or online. I use the Herbarie's Conditioning Emulsifier BTMS, and one of their preservatives called Optiphen.

I just tried to go to www.herbarie.com, and didn't get anything. Have I got the right URL?
http://www.theherbarie.com/

I had to search too... It looks good
THE TRANSITION PERIOD IS OVER- MY HAIR IS FREE AND I FEEL GREAT!!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks Moisturemaniac.
This is just the kind of simple recipe I've been looking for for my fine 3A strands, but I can't get hold of the emulsifier where I live. Does anyone know of a natural emulsifier I could use, perhaps something used in cooking would do the trick.
Thanks for that info , how much of the preservative do you use?

rats-tails,

Unfortunately, I've only ever been able to find emulsifiers through internet stores, such as theherbarie or fromnaturewithlove.com Other types are: vegetable emulsifying wax, acacia gum, lechthin, beeswax ect, but I find that these don't always give consistent results. They either don't emulsify the Co fully, or else they make my hair look bad. I use the BTMS conditioning emulsifier from theherbarie because it consists of cetyl alcohol and Behentrimonium chloride, the ingredients most similar to the emulsifier used in the Deva products. Sorry I can't help more

Delma,

I use about a teaspoon and a half of preservative per every four cups of conditioner I make.

BethV and brwn_i'd_wndr,

sorry, I must have posted the site address wrong! Thanks for clarifying

Is there a difference between glycerin that you find at like a drug store and "vegetable" glycerin? I've seen glycerin at Walgreens, but it says nothing about if it's vegetable or not.

thanks.

my Fotki hair journey/experiment diary PW is brio (and I really need to update it!)

What emusifier do you buy from www.fromnaturewithlove.com?

Nature's Gate Awapuhi Volumizing Conditioner
Graham Webb Making Waves gel
jojoba or coconut oil as a DT

Hair is pretty great now that it's colder, now I'm focusing on my skin. Sniffle.
Just thought I'd let everyone know that you can get the BTMS emulsifier on www.lotioncrafter.com. There is no minimum order amount (unlike on theherbarie.com where you have to spend $30), so you can just buy a little to try it out. It is called Lotioncrafter BTMS and it is $4.95 for 8 oz.

Brio,

I'm not sure about the difference in the glycerin. It doesn't specifiy the vegetable type on the Deva products, so I would guess it's ok

Megnificent,

Cool! I'm always looking for new sites that sell cream-making supplies! I'll have to check it out
Also, from fromnaturewithlove.com i order vegetable emulsiying wax. It works very well as an emulsifier, but I don't like the way my hair comes out when I make Co with it. Instead I use it when I make hand and body cream.

Oops, there is a minimum order amount on www.lotioncrafter.com, but it is only $12.95. I ordered the emulsifier, the glycerin and the preservative, and that was about $15 total.

Has anyone tried lecithin or stearic acid with the emulsifier to thicken? I know lecithin is supposed to be very good for hair. I have both of those on hand and I don't like to add too much wax.

I use Rosemary Oil Antioxidant for a preservative and really like that.

What oils and essential oils have you tried? I have a whole array on hand and would love to hear what others are liking
I just bought coconut oil, peppermint oil (for cleansing), and jojoba oil today. I will let you know how they turn out.

I LOVE adding essential oils! Peppermint is very good, it's in the original No-poo formula. At the moment I'm adding lavender, which is very soothing. I've also tried making the cleansing Co with jojoba oil, which was fine, but a little too heavy for my fine hair
Lecithin is very good for the hair, but it comes from eggs, which are a protein, so if your hair is protein-sensitive, be careful. i know mine got a little dry when I tried adding this. i haven't tried stearic acid yet, let me know how it turns out! Also, how long does the rosemary oil preserve for? i am interested in trying it.
