Default FSG-curl enhancer besides magnesium?

I have read so much about the FSG but I just can't decide what my hair needs in the way of additives. I make it with mag sulfate and small glop of AVG. I would like to find an additive to make my curls bigger or looser, and more consistent and more clumping. I wondered what you chemists would suggest!

TIA!

Sorry to butt in, but where does one buy magnesium sulfate? What other additives do people use in their FSG?

I get lots of clumps if I use lots of FSG then comb through my hair with a denman. If you don't have a denman, use a fine tooth comb.

As far as additives that enhance curls. Seamollient is supposed to enhance curls. If the MS and Seamollient makes your curls too tight, maybe adding 1 tsp hair oil to loosen the tight curl and add moisture. This is just a guess. Not sure if adding oil will loosen the curl. I have oil and seamollient in my FSG and it causes loose curls.

Magneseum Sulfate is also known as Epson Salt. You can get this at any drugstore or supermarket. It's the stuff you use to soak soar muscles. Add no more than 1/4 ts to the water when you are boiling the flax seeds.

I just got some jojoba oil, I will try it tonight in my next batch. Thanks for the advice.

Has anyone ever used guar gum instead of xantham gum? I had a hard time spending $11 on a big bag of xg.

I don't use MS, but most who do say no more than 1/4 tsp for about 4 oz I think. Try a smaller amount like 1/8 tsp and add more if your hair can take it because even the smallest amounts can dry your hair out.

I actually use seamollient which has magnesium in it but doesn't seem to dry the hair out. I only use 2 tb per 8oz. Here is the link. It's a huge amount but it stays good for a long time. Or buy a sample from KathyMack.

you could always try a different magnesium compound. It's the magnesium that is the curl enhancer. Magnesium oil is an option, but it is very concentrated and it does not take much to work.

I am experimenting with Dead Sea Salts because they are very high in magnesium and other minerals. Mag Sulfate gives me good curls, but it is drying on my hair.

I use magnesium oil, which is magnesium chloride--not drying at all.

FSG stands for flax seed gel, a homemade gel that many curlies have found beneficial to their hair routine. Here is the link to a recipe that I like:

No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE!

There are a lot of acronyms that curlies use on this site, FSG being one of them. Here's a link to the acronym and abbreviations list:

Where do you find magnesium oil? Do you add it to the water as you are boiling or after you strain the seeds? Thanks!

Do you mix the magnesium oil with roughly the same ratio as the salt....1 tsp to 4 oz? I'm looking all over the boards and just can't find the way to mix it.
My hair does great on the beach and I really want to try to recreate the curl.

Is this something a health store would carry or do I have to get it online?

Same here. Know any stores that sell it, instead of online?
