Oil cleansing method (OCM) for skin

That happens to me occasionally, and I realized it is because sometimes I forget to wipe the oil away of those parts. Since that oil has all the impurities, you want to wipe it all out!

Okay, I'm digging this post out of the graveyard because Kathymack directed me to it when I asked her how she cleanses

I've done this a couple of times now, and mainly, I'm just happy I'm not breaking out. When I deviate from my regular routine I usually start to have horrible zits everywhere. However, I knew I was sensitive to something in my cleanser and I just can't find a cleanser that isn't a soap (really hard water here), or has citric acid (don't ask, just know that I know I'm sensitive).

I started experimenting with different store brands, but obviously something has changed because now when I use a store bought cleanser I break out in horrible pus bits all over my face and my upper lip swells up. SooOOOoOOOOooOOOooooooo

Just to let you guys know, I've used this for about 2x now, in place of my usual acidic treatment and I haven't broken out. That would be about 7 days. the rough sandpapery section on my right cheek is disappearing, so I have hope! The fact that I'm not a broken out mess is the biggest thing. Usually when I drop the BHA product I break out within a week. Nothing new so far.

Anyway, I guess I'm just posting here to sorta keep a log for those others who are interested in it. I've read a lot where it works great for about a month and then people break out again.

I'm very oily in the t-zone, dry cheeks, and blackheads everywhere. Very acne prone. I got it under control once I started using a salacylic acid product, but now it seems as if I'm allergic to all over the counter products, so I've had to go on a search for alternatives.

I've ordered a lot of great stuff from Garden of wisdom. Once I started using Markey's stuff the swelling went down on my face and I started peeling. I broke out again (but I had dropped all over the counter products) so I ordered her BHA product. It took about a week before my skin cleared up after starting on the BHA product. So since then, I've been pretty good, except for that right cheek. Well in the last month or so, its gone nutty and is all red and sandpapery. So I'm ditching the BHA and my regular cleanser for a week or so.

Right now I use a mix of 25% castor and 75% sunflower. Got some other oils to play with, but since my skin is so picky, I figured I'd start easy and move from there. I'd like to try adding tea tree and/or lavender for the extra bacterial kill.

Sorry for the long post, just kinda frustrated. I'll let you know how my experimenting goes!

The best my hubby and I can make of it, we've decided I'm allergic to some preservative, or some ingredient that they use in many products. I haven't been able to make rhyme or reason of it. Also, when I started back on my antihistamines (this summer has been bad here) my skin smoothed out and several problem zits I had went away. So its obviously an allergy of some kind, I just don't know what to...

Hi Ladies,
Another curly with problem skin here. This is intriguing me and I think it could really work for my sensitive, acne-prone yet occasionally very dry (complicated!) skin. But I have a question (if anyone still checks up on this thread ):
If you wear makeup or sunscreen etc, does it come off with the deep cleanse? Or do you have to wash it off first before cleansing - or cleanse twice?

TIA

I agree with kathymack, no problems with removing makeup! In fact, I wash my face with the OCM every night to remove my make up first, then jump into the shower.

My blog: Can't Stop Thinking About Hair
I've been doing the OCM about 2x per week for about a year now. I've never had a flaring acne problem, but I do tend to get where my skin feels rough --lots of little tiny bumps (I think it's clogged pores) on my cheeks and the usual nose pores problem. OCM clears that right up, and it stays cleared up as long as I do it 2x per week. More than that and my skin gets too dry. I use about a 70/30 ratio of rose hip seed oil and castor oil. OCM also makes my skin look glowing, even-toned, and much more youthful. I don't even need to use any foundation anymore, and I haven't for about 11 months or so. Just eye makeup and some creme blush. In between the OCM, I use a few different gentle cleansers that I get from Garden of Wisdom.

Update

My cheeks are doing great on this, my nose -- not so much. My super dry cheeks feel the best they have in over a year, and I've got horrible stuff going on at the bridge of my nose. So I went back to washing it, and now only do the oil on my cheeks before I go in the shower. Seems to be working better.

I only OCM'd 2x a week for 2 weeks and my nose just exploded. But it wasn't until the end of the 2nd week that it did that.

Oh well, I'm also wondering if it was because I didn't use my mandelic acid either. I'll have to re-arrange my routine and see if that's it.

How often do you do this method per week? I have relatively normal skin, a little oily around the t-zone, but I'm a teenager so I guess that's normal for me. I would love to try this method!

so funny this post has been brought back up because i was JUST thinking about revisiting this after seeing a blog post about it!

I plan to only use it at night & do a gentle wash with my aveeno bar soap in the morning if necessary.

Im going to use about 70% castor oil (last time i dont think i used enough) with either 20% Hazelnut oil (great for oily skin, light and astringent) & 10% Tamanu oil OR 30% Hazelnut oil with manuka essential oil added.
The Tamanu & Manuka are going to hopefully help with my acne..

btw I have oily acne prone skin, that ive been having sooooo much difficulty with lately! grrrr

You can buy it at most grocery stores and its much cheeper than the Tamanu!!! Don't get me wrong, I love Tamanu oil on my skin, but I consider it way too expensive to use in a wash off product.

I use 40% Castor, 50% Grape Seed, 10% Rice Bran in my formula. I use this daily.

The thing with the OCM is that one has to gauge how often one needs to do it, based on one's skin care needs. It's probably best to begin to do it once a week, at night, to see how the skin responds.

I do it every night before bed and only water rinse in the morning or when I take my shower. If you don't want to do it every day to start, I'd suggest a few times a week to get a gauge of what it's doing for you.

I'm in the more than once a week camp also. I think if you get the right balance of oils you'll be able to do OCM nightly without problems. I started out mixing each application of oil in my palm, until I found the right ratio for my skin. Once I'd used the same ratio with good results for a while, I went ahead and pre-mixed some in a large dropper bottle. A friend uses a liquid soap dispenser.

I would definitely say more than once a week to start. I've used for about a month. First 2-3 weeks my use was sporadic, about once per week. Not because I had a fear but got so busy I forgot about to do it at night and often didn't have time in the AM. This past week I committed to be more diligent in using which has really helped in my evaluation of using this. I still need a couple of more weeks of diligent use before I completely know if it's for me but I'm definitely loving how my skin feels when I use this. So, so far so good. I think this routine is definitely going to be a keeper.

Just a follow up.. I tried two times two different techniques unsuccessfully since that last post..and finally watched a youtube video by the MopTopMaven and did her technique.. success! She, who is acne prone.. uses it as her only form of cleansing now & her skin is flawless!
I have been doing it consistently & skin has cleared significantly (enough for me to continue!) Its not perfect but I noticed when I stopped and tested out some other soaps my skin got worse.

My tamanu mixture was okay but nothing special, so I ended up with a Hazelnut/Castor mix (about 80-20 castor to hazelnut) with a little ylang ylang eo in it
Im going to try out grapeseed next, because I can also use it on my hair and can get it on ground.

I currently alternate the ocm with grandpas pine tar soap (tried many others, this one worked the best).. I usually do the ocm at night but starting this week im going to try to do it day and night. Because I am still getting small breakouts, im still experimenting.

I know this thread is old, but for those who are still interested, The Moptopmaven has done a couple posts on the ocm that are very helpful. http://www.moptopmaven.blogspot.com/ .. her overall skincare regimen is great!

For those who break out during or after the first two weeks there are some things you are probably doing wrong other than not using the right oil combo that I noticed caused problems for me. Not steaming with hot enough water to open your pores for long enough, and not wiping ALL of the oil off. Also, in the beginning I could see the clogged pores before they turned into bumps.. or "plugs" ppl were talking about, and every night I would make sure to extract them.

Also, I moisturize with emu oil mixed with Aubrey Organics Vegecol Moisturizer.. that emu is rich, kind of greasy but absorbs completely somehow and leaves my skin soft, also has lightened scarring on my cheeks. Its one of the FEW "miracle" products ive invested in that have actually convinced me it does what it claims and was worth my money (yeah im excited LOL)
I just started doing OCM 2 weeks ago. I do it every night before bed (the OCM website recommends this). I started with a 25-75 CO/Olive oil mix but changed it to 30-70 the second week because I didn't feel/see any plugs coming out. They're coming out now and my skin feels nice and smooth. I used to have great skin, no marks, no pimples, even skin tone. I have a few dry patches around my mouth and my t-zone is oily. In the past year, I've been breaking out quite a bit around my cheeks and forehead. OCM has been clearing up my pimples and smoothing the rough, dry patches. The only problem is, my skin feels a little taught and dry after i do it and the site said you don't need to use moisturizer after it, but I really feel like I need it. I was wondering if I could use aloe vera gel? I bought a HUGE bottle (it was the only one they had) for my hair, but it turns out, my hair doesn't like it too much, so I'm trying to use it up in other ways. Would it be bad for my face? I like how it moisturizes without feeling greasy so it would really be the perfect thing!

Also, I was thinking about cutting down on the oil cleansing.. to maybe 2-3 times per week. What do you guys that don't do it everyday use on your off days? Preferably something cheap that I can buy on ground. (I don't live near a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's).

Oh, and I use olive oil. It seems like a lot of people are saying this is not that great since it's comedogenic. How does almond oil rank in the comedogenicity scale? I have a lot of that at home (my hair loves it!), but if it's no good for my face, I'll go get some sunflower oil (or other suggestions?).

When I OCM every other day my skin stays moisturized and clear. As for the different mixtures its like out hair, you have to test different amounts and oils to see which suits you the best. I always use jojoba oil, it mimics the skins natural sebum.

I ONLY use OCM on my skin. I have not (for about 2 1/2 years) used makeup remover, lotions, or astringents on my face. Occasionally when my skin needs a good scrub I will use Epsom salts and HOT water. I wear makeup and to remove it, I use a tiny bit of my mixture and warm water which is what i do on my "off days".

Every time I tell people my skin care regimen they look at me like I'm crazy especially when I say I used it to clear my skin of acne. I still get the occasional pimple when I'm super stressed or I have fallen behind on my method.

I am all about being natural, I think nature has given us everything we need to be healthy and beautiful so why use expensive chemicals that dont work?!

ruchipuchi i believe if your skin feels taught after you need to use less castor, also it tells you if you feel like you need a moisturizer use a dab of whatever oil u use in your mix (in your case olive) id definitely switch though, sunflower jojoba or grapeseed! Almond is nice too.. I used it on my skin before and like the way it feels but im not sure if it clogged my pores because thats back when my skin was pretty bad
