I'm DESPERATE!!

It may not be authentic, it may not be the greatest, it may be a total wannabe, may be sichuan... BUT I LOVE IT!

How is the rice so yellowy??? Is it azafran? Day old azafran rice then warmed up in the wok with special goodiness?? Its def. NOT egg- there is no egg in this rice. How do they season the pork? I bought the char sui but the taste wasn't the taste I'm used to. I've looked online every where and haven't really been able to find what I'm looking for!

And those chicken wings??!?! Always so juicy!!!

I know this is a shot in the dark, but I figured I'd put it out there... maybe someone lives upstairs from a Chinese restaurant and wants to ask...

No suggestions for you but must say your thread reminded me how much I miss good Chinese (and Vietnamese - I love you Ginger at Yonge and Bloor!) food ... sigh.

My neighbours on one side are Chinese and run a takeaway. Unfortunately they don't speak English, I don't speak Chinese (despite being genetically half Chinese) so never the twain shall meet where recipes are concerned - although they do always give me something free when I go into the takeaway

I'm seriously obssessed with Chinese takeout. And even though I understand its not authentic, and it's greasy and probably one of the worst fast foods out there I LOVE IT.

Try the Steamy Kitchen blog, as well as serious eats, simplyrecipes, and books by Fuschia Dunlop, though she deals with more authentic food, depending on the region (Chinese cuisine is very diverse).
Man o man I miss ny style chinese takeout. Even though I know what the good authentic stuff tastes like, I still daydream about day-glo yellow pork fried rice and those fat roast pork egg rolls.

. I love NY Chinese take out. I don't even KNOW when's the next time I'll have it. . And their wings!!! Mmmmm. I would take the duck sauce and mix it with the hot sauce and dip my chicken in it... OH GOSH!! I'm wondering if it will make here ok if my mom over nights it...

Seriously, G, try the steamy kitchen blog and simply recipes. They tackle a lot of the classic takeout stuff.

You mean you tried them and didn't like the recipes? Jaden's egg rolls on Steamy Kitchen have good reviews!
Chowhound is another good site for recipes.
Rasamalaysia blog is good for Asian recipes, but more authentic stuff, less takeout classics.

I guess for me it's nostalgia for a specific type of Chinese food that I grew up with living in a working class neighborhood in Queens. Finding good asian recipes isn't the issue.
