Clean eating - Let's try this again!

Just looking for conversation w/ folks who eat:
paleo
primal
whole 30
vegan
whole food
dairy-free
grain-free
"clean"
or other eating styles that eliminate or reduce foods that are deemed unhealthy, metabolically-harmful, mucous-producing, overly-processed or inflammatory.

No need for anyone to defend their choices.

Just healthy food inspiration, food porn (pics), reminders why we chose these eating styles, maybe links to research or recipes, questions, rec.

I loved eating paleo but fell off the wagon when I visited my parents/went back to NYC for a week in April and didn't have my usual stuff and was thrown off my routine.

So I'm getting back on this horse but think I might need to turbo charge by omitting fruits for a while to drop the extra weight I picked up by eating junk.

Lunch will be a grilled chicken and field green salad w/ a little bacon, red onion and cucumber w/ balsamic vinaigrette...and an iced tea.

What's for dinner, everyone?

I'm glad you posted this. I keep trying to remind myself of why I need to eat the way that I do, and I lose track a lot. I've lost track the past couple of weeks due to eating out, other people preparing food, etc. I've stayed the same weight, but I'm having issues again. Plus coming off BCP I really need to focus on balancing my hormones.

I need to get back to the SCD diet. I do much better grain free, and I really need to go full dairy free. I always feel like there's one missing piece, and it's always dairy and I always fail at cutting it out.

Why the heck don't we listen to our bodies? My tastebuds always win

Smashed Steak Skewers with Cherry Barbecue Sauce (Inspired by The Croods)




Here’s what to hunt and gather to make 16 skewers:
For the Cherry Barbecue Sauce (Makes 1⅔ cup of sauce):
  • 2 teaspoons ghee or fat of choice
  • ½ cup minced shallot
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 (1-inch) ginger root, peeled and finely grated (I use a Microplane)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ¼ cup coconut aminos (or wheat-free tamari)
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup apple juice
  • 10 ounces frozen cherries, roughly chopped
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
For the Smashed Steak Skewers:
  • 1½-pound flank steak
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons melted ghee
  • ¼ cup scallions, thinly sliced (optional)

I made paleo mayonnaise this morning. It's easy, healthy and can be thinned out for a salad dressing. I'll be using the mayo on a burger tonight and the dressing on a salad at lunch. I added raw honey, mustard powder and Adobo.

I always hated store-bought mayo. But this stuff is great!

I'm glad you posted that! I've been wondering how to make my own body-friendly mayo. I will have to try that!

I made almost-paleo brownies last night. I had recipes for totally paleo brownies. But when I went to buy the coconut flour, there was a recipe on the bag for almost paleo brownies, and it just worked out to be more convenient to look at the bag which I needed to have out on the counter, rather than to look at my electronic devise.

I made them w/ coconut oil, coconut flour, coconut milk, two bananas, eggs, salt, agave, unsweetened cocoa powder, semisweet chocolate chips and pecans.

(I personally added the unsweetened cocoa powder to the recipe to rely less heavily on the chocolate chips, which are not paleo. And I also added the pecans for some texture.)

They turned out really well! No coconut taste IMO but a slight banana taste...which is fine w/ me.



OK these are not actually the brownies I made or even likely to be paleo brownies but I just wanted a pic of brownies!

That said...I need to lay off the sweet stuff, either way. I need to dial all carbs way back for right now!

Thinking about getting one of these to make frozen fruit desserts. (I already have an ice cream-maker but this would be a nice change of pace.)

True paleo didn't work out for me. But what stuck is incorporating tons of veggies into my diet.

I'm making a meatloaf right now. I use 1lb lean ground beef and 1lb ground turkey. Put lots of veggies in a food processor, kale, zuchini, carrots, onions and celery tonight. Saute the veggies to soften them a bit. Then bind it all together with 4-5 eggs. Season to taste of course. It makes a very hearty meal on it's own... don't really have to pair anything with it but usually a side of green beans makes it feel more complete.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE vegetables. But I'm not sure about eating meat that takes like a vegetable! LOL

What didn't you like about Paleo?

This intermittent fasting is hard! Your paleo might be my IF!

I love that I can eat pretty much what I want with intermittent fasting and not feel deprived. I love bread and rice and grains and potatoes! I still try to eat healthy highly nutritional food as much as possible but don't feel so guilt ridden for eating bread and dairy and peanuts omg.. I love peanuts! Intermittent fasting has legitimate studies to back it up that it does work and the studies show even eating all your meals in a daily 12 hour window is beneficial.
