My first cut with TERI at THE STRAND AT PINECREST (Miami/South Florida/So Miami Dade)

I had my first cut with Teri who rents a booth in the salon called THE STRAND AT PINECREST. I had an eleven o'clock with her (and my hubby had an eleven o'clock with Krystal, so we both got done simultaneously).

Teri is an effervescent, friendly blonde with a wavier sort of curl in her hair. (I took pics of her and me which I will upload to Fotki today.)

I had the same stylist for 22 years, but she retired last month due to health issues.

Teri carefully examined my hair, complimented my natural, air-dried curls for lack of damage and excellent moist condition. (I did a great deep treatment with Curl Junkie H&B deep fix with some Curl Fix for ends the night before. I had done Wowohwow's routine, so I had no frizz yesterday and negligible frizz when I took it out of the pineapple. I did take a pic before she started my color, but it's mussed from her examining my hair.)

I told her I wanted a minimal change (nothing drastic) and she said the cut I had was pretty good and she'd trim up this and neaten that and I said, do what you think best.

I got a color to roots/grays (dark brown, Redken Color Fusion), and I got a color glaze (dark brown) for all over to seal and give shine. I then got my trim (a quick experience, and very little loss of length, as I said I wanted to grow my sides down longer).

She used UNITE poo (and I don't kno wwhat's in it, but I suspect cones galore, hah). She used AG Fast Good, then AG Re:coil. I asked her to diffuse some, as we were going to lunch and I didn't wanna walk into a cafe with wet hair. She diffused about 50 t0 60% dry, and off I went.

Note: I took my own floursack towels, but no products, though I don't doubt she'd be fine with people bringing their preferred CG stuff. She did not pixie-curl, but regular diffusion type drying with fingerworking and scrunching. But if you want to air-dry, I'm sure that's not a problem, as other reviewers have stated.

I scrunched a bit in the car as the a/c cool blasted my hair. I liked the feel of the products in my hair. Not crunchy (no gel was used). The curls are more "eighties" than clumped 21st century, and to be honest, I'm fine with that. I think we tend to pursue clumps as obsessively as some people pursue sleek straightened hair.

I was happy with my color and cut. Even though she was discreet with the snipping, I can see the improvement in overall shape and how it's more flattering from front-face pictures. Definitely.

So, I was happy and I'd see Teri again.

It's was easy to find a Google street view and mapquest route to the place. US 1 south to 132nd street, left, and it's about a block or so in on the left in a small strip mall. For us, it was 50 minute drive in non-rush hour from Aventura area. Cash or check, no credit cards.

My hubby got highlights (blonde) and a trim from Krystal, and while our previous stylist actually did a nicer job overall on his coarse, straightish hair in terms of the blonde I like on him, he looks good and my husband said she had a very nice manner and soft touch (he is supersensitive to getting hair pulled, yanked, combed, etc). And she was attentive and FAST with the foil. So, if you want to do your hair and have another family member do theirs, she's a good choice.

I'm gonna go upload to Fotki. Will edit this when done.

The pics are now up at Fotki, my account doesn't require a password. Mircurls. The series begins with this "sitting in the stylist's chair before pic" http://public.fotki.com/MirCurls/cur...jpg.html#media

Just keep hitting "next" to see after half-dry, after full dry, different views.

We don't all have the same idea of what's a good cut for ourselves and curls, but I was happy with this result in terms of color, shape, and my overall experience with Teri at this rented-booth salon. She's a doll.

The only thing I could complain about was she was 20 mins late, but ya know, it's not like I was in a rush. Hubby got seen right off by Krystal. It's worth waiting a bit for a good cut experience. Pricing was VERY good considering that I've seen prices for cuts in Miami way, way above this. For my color, then color glaze, then cut, then partial diffuse, it was a total of $95. I consider that great for a metro area like ours where some salons ask for 100 bucks just for a cut.

Thanks. It's really nice to be able to wash and go again (which is hard when you need a shaping). I can just walk out the door and trust that it will air-dry nicely. That's worth a lot to me.

Hope my other Miami curlies are doing great now that the rainy season has come upon us. (Please, God, no hurricanes!)

I know how nervous you were about finding a new stylist.. glad everything worked out for the best and you got a good cut! Looks good Mir!

Went to Teri again on June 5 and she didn't think I needed a trim, but we did a brunette laminate to refresh my color.

Refreshing to have a stylist be honest rather than just do a minimal trim and take the cash on a new customer.

My hubby got a layered cut from Carsell and he did a good job, so any guys want a cut, he's good, too.

I saw Teri for a cellophane laminate glaze application back in early June, but she didn't trim me (said I didn't need it). Here is the hairstyle she gave me back in late April and how it looked July 18 (3 months later) in first pic, and the rest on how it looked last Saturday (July 31):

After much searching on here for the best curly stylist, I just got back from an appointment with Teri at The Strand. I live in Fort Lauderdale, and I thought I'd give her a try. I'm new to CG (2 months) and was very nervous.

First, Teri is *incredibly* nice. The very first thing she did when I sat down was to ask me to tell her everything about my hair. I tried to condense everything I've learned from this site into just a few minutes---which is NOT possible. She complimented the health of my hair (shocking, as I just colored it last week) She said I needed to grow out my bangs a little, and that a little layering & face-framing would help me. I didn't want to lose much length, and she said I really only needed an inch off the ends. It's been at least 5 months since I last had a cut, so I was surprised.

Then I mentioned a 'dry cut', and she said she didn't do dry cuts. She said that if I had tighter curls, it would be good for me, but wavy hair really needs a wet cut. I was surprised, as I assumed (my fault) that she did dry cuts). I told her I was CG, and didn't use shampoo. She told me she really didn't understand the 'no poo' thing. She does use sulfate-free products, but doesn't know what the 'no poo' people are talking about. I showed her the products I brought with me (DevaCare No Poo, One-C, and ArcAngel---I let them use their products anyway). Teri wasn't familiar with the Deva line. I told her they were made by the lady who literally wrote the book on curly hair, and she nodded. So she must know about Lorraine??

Now I'm a little nervous, but she's *so nice*, non-threatening, and made me feel so comfortable. She didn't sound like she'd be doing crazy stuff to my hair. I'd driven an hour to see her, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

There was lather (*gasp*) in whatever the girl used to wash my hair. I suppressed my urge to be anal-retentive and ask to read the ingredients. I will choose just to pretend that 10 minutes never happened. We will never mention it again....

The combing of my hair was a bit rougher than I would have liked. I have very tangly hair & I'm not sensitive-headed. It didn't hurt, but I lose a LOT of hair, and I've worked hard to get it healthy. Teri commented that I lost alot of hair & might want to consider seeing a doctor for it. Been there & done that, but she has a point & I'll follow up on it.

The cut was super-quick. She was thorough, and did just what she said she would. She used some AG Recoil curl cream in it (my request after seeing so many comments on this site). There was minimal scrunching. Seriously. At home I scrunch a reeeediculous amount. I asked about root clipping. She didn't know what I was talking about. I asked how she got root lift. Teri said she just scrunches the roots as it dries or ruffles it with her fingers. I took some pics when I got home pre- and post-scrunch. I've posted them below. It's overall not very curly at all. The roots are very flat/straight. I will post more soon when I've styled it myself.

She suggested I just see if I like the Recoil & decide later if I want to buy it. She said not to ever let anyone push products that you haven't tried. I really appreciated that, and I told her that enough people on here love it, and I'd like to get some for myself anyway. We talked about 'cones & she said she didn't understand why so many curlies didn't want products with cones. I explained that it coats our hair & that we're not using products that can remove them. She said we 'need' something to coat our hair, or otherwise it will be frizzy. Hmmmm......

What I liked: I know I said it a couple times before, but she's fantastically nice. Completely genuine. The cut was really inexpensive ($30)

What I didn't like: wet cut, products used (although I feel certain they would have used the ones I brought if I asked), lack of knowledge about CG & some of the techniques.

I feel badly writing anything negative about her. As I called my husband on the way home, he asked how I liked it. I was overall disappointed that I wasn't 'WOWed' like some people are on here after a 'curly' cut. I'd hoped she would be more on the CG bandwagon. However, she did minimal change to my hair. The ends are now healthy, and I wasn't butchered. No excitement, but I wasn't crying either. It was just ...meh... for me. I will only return if I cannot find a CG dry-cut stylist.

What you should know: they are a cash or check only place. If you decide to purchase product, it is billed separately by the store. Example: I had a cut by Teri & bought Ag Recoil. I wrote a check to Teri for the cut and a check to the store for product.

HTH! I <3 you guys!

Thanks for posting the review. I hope more local people write reviews, no matter who they visit. And thanks super much for the pics. Great follow-up review.

Teri is not CG, so she's not into the Curly Girl thing. I do think she should bone up on it, just cause she is reviewed here and she is curly herself. I let her use her stuff when I go there, though I do ask for sulfate free poos if available. I use the Re:coil line (all of it on some days) and I'm not strict CG (I'm mod-CG and occasionally use 'cones), so her system doesn't bother me as I lowpoo.

I do find I'm curlier when *I* style it. I do take my own floursack towels with me (the salon uses terry cloth standard towels) and my own laminate tube for glazing. And last time, I took my own gel (a tester I loved).

I find my hair looks really good after visiting her twice (only one trim, though, as she said I didn't need one in June). It grew out really nice. Looks better now in August than the trim in April as the layers grew out really attractively.

BTW, might wanna try Salon Vaso if you haven't already. That's one on my list to try someday if I don't feel like the long haul drive to Pinecrest to Teri. I'd ask for Vaso herself, though, just to make sure. That's who I want to try just to see how she does, as she has a lot of curly recommendations online. I really hate going to South Beach. Not my vibe. I'm a bookworm otaku churchy matron, not a bikini glamour club gal type.

As far as dry cut CG style, the GBS salons do that (Coral Gables, Ft Laud, Aventura). One is near my house, but I am suspicious of the dry cut on me. I'd only let Struttswife do it, and that would mean driving to the other coast.

Do post with pics if you get it done and review. I'm sure many local CGs would love to find a great dry-cutter. (Oh, and blubutterfly did post pics and a review of her dry CG cut.)

Thanks again...

My first cut was April. This was my second. I redid my roots and color (like in April, the permanent color on roots, glaze on the rest, this time Sebastian Laminates that I bought, and I take the tube myself.)
I took my Curl Rehab to use as rinse out after the poo. She used AG FF and AG Re:coil like last time. No gel, though. She diffuses partway dry. I'm still damp in the pics (we went to the restaurant next door). No clipping, either.
