Long Island Deva Cut

I got my first Devacut today at a salon called Evolutions in West Babylon, Long Island. My stylist was Erica. I am really really happy with it. The place itself was so welcoming, right from the phone call to make the appointment. I even called back last night to ask them if I should wash my hair prior and all and the girl on the phone explained the entire process to me. Really great.

Erica was very knowledgeable and really listened to what I wanted, asking about my current routine and showing me some new tips and tricks. My main reason for going was that my bangs were driving me nuts. I've been growing them in and they were so in my face I was considering just cutting them again. But Erica showed me a way to keep them out of my face by clipping them a certain way during the drying process and they haven't been in my face all day! I'm so glad because I really didn't want to cut them, and she agreed and this method should work until they are grown in.

I was very surprised and pleased that they didn't attempt to sell me any products and recommend anything that I wasn't currently using. Actually, she took some products out of my routine. I thought for sure they would use the devafuser on me and try to sell it to me (and I probably would have bought it) but she felt that it wasn't for my type of hair and that the bowl diffuser I am currently using is better and encourages more curls on my type of hair which is mostly 2b with some 3a mixed. However, I walked out of there with full on 3a spiral curls and it is 6 hours later and they look just as good as when I left.

Very happy with the whole experience. I had a Ouidad cut at the Ouidad salon in NYC in March, and I have to tell you this was so much better.

Oh yeah...the price....only $37!!! Can't beat that!

Thanks for your review of this place. I am looking for a place on Long Island that is closer to home. I just have a few questions:

Was your hair dry or wet when she cut it?
Did they use CG haircare products?
While you were there did you get your hair colored/highlighted? If so, did you like it?

I appreciate your response. I always get nervous when trying new places.
Thanks!!

They used all Deva products on my hair - as was my choice. They had some other products there but I told them that I use the Deva products.

I went in with my hair styled like normal and she cut my hair dry. When she was done she washed my hair - with Low-Poo (my choice - she had no poo also). Then she showed me how to dry it, scrunch in gel, clip. Then she diffused it for a little while and then I sat under a dryer for about 10 minutes to air dry.

I did not get my hair colored. I usually do my own color, but I am considering getting it colored there. I asked about color and the charge $40 for a single process. I know she does highlights and all also but I didn't inquire about that as I don't do highlights.

Let me know if you go. I really like it because it was less than 10 minutes from my house, the price was right and I thought she was very knowledgeable. Plus my hair really looked great. She didn't cut a lot, and I didn't want her to. Just snips here and there. She said she's been doing the deva cuts for about a year, trained at the deva center in nyc.

Yes you should definitely post some pics!! I need to find a great stylist in my area as well, since being natural I have not been to a professional. I am in need of a trim but I really don't want to have to do it myself again, I want to know what the pro's think of my self upkept hair..

I think in general, when someone gets a cut they love, it's a very good idea to post pics. What *I* consider a great cut, someone else might think is horrible. haha No, seriously, nothing speaks louder than ...a picture.

I'm sorry, I didn't take any pictures that day. But I will soon. I have to say I have been getting consistently good hair everyday since then. And its more because of the changes she taught me to my daily routine. The best part is - the changes are using less product (costing me less $$) and saving me time and result in daily good hair days - can't beat that.

My new routine is -

Wash or co-wash; Condition; Rinse gently leaving some in; scrunch gel into soaking dripping wet hair with head upside down; with microfiber towel, scrunch out some moisture; diffuse for about 10 minutes until about 85% dry; Clip front/sides to get hair out of face; Let air dry; Pull out clips; with head upside down I lightly scrunch in either Mirror Curls mixed with Set it Free or JCNS. Walla! All done.

The biggest difference to what I had been doing is the way I scrunch in the gel. I used to just put a hand full all over my head quickly but now I scrunch several small amounts into soaking wet hair in sections and scrunch for a while with my head upside down. Then I gently dry it by just scrunching out the water. I then just flip my head over and I can see how it is falling differently into nicely defined clumps. I also eliminated plopping - which for some reason my hair didn't really benefit from it. When I plop my hair is more wavy loose curls, but when I don't they are more defined spirals.

I am also finding that with this method I get hardly any crunch - which may be because some of the gel is soaked up by the towel - but yet my curls are holding all day.

West Babylon is only about forty minutes from where I live, which isn't bad at all. I wanted to get a haircut at the actual Deva salon this summer, but it's so expensive! Erica sounds great. She's Deva-trained, yes? And $37 for a haircut! I'm so shocked. Actually, I did something very stupid a few months back, in about October/November. I cut my bangs short. Really short. So short they still stick up awkwardly and I have to pull them back with a headband. I've been looking for a curly stylist anyway. My old stylist didn't know anything about curly hair, so I tried to cut it myself on Valentine's Day, and that didn't work so well. It's not too bad anymore but it needs some evening out. I've also been eager to try the DevaCurl products.

Sorry if I'm rambling. I'm just happy to hear of a stylist who's not two hours away and costs $250.

Gina, thank you for posting your review on Erica at Evolutions hair salon. I had seen their website online in my search for a hair salon on long island to cut curly hair and had been hesitating about going there. I was not happy with my previous 2 haircuts in manhattan at Christo and Arte. Having not had my hair styled in many months, I decided to try Erica. I called on Thursday evening and got an appt for yesterday, Friday and I am so happy that I did! She is only 20 mins or so away and she was so friendly and did a great job! My experience was similar to yours and now I no longer have the dreaded triangular shape when my hair gets dried. I have found my new hairstylist. She asked where I had heard of
her and I told her about your rave review on this site. Hope you don't mind. Now I am off to stand in front a
mirror and watch my hair...lol.

I was there several times in the last 5 years for both curly cuts and not curly. Well, not a dry cut....Erica has never cut my hair dry.

I heard about it from this site originally. There have been many changes from my last haircut which was last Spring/Summer. (working backwards here) Apparently it's now called 'Curly Evolutions' and a cut will run you 60$

I have never paid more than 40$ for a cut there, but again, it was not a dry cut.

My first cut there was in 2010 and my hair was pretty long and I suppose damaged compared to it's state today. The curl was 2bish and she said I didn't really need a dry cut. So I went with wet & she used all Deva products.

I was happy with the cut & the products, but that all changed after a while. My satisfaction with the cut outlasted my satisfaction with the products and I stopped CG/mod CG.

I tried to make an appointment a year or so after my original cut but Erica was unavailable & I couldn't take it anymore, so I took their suggestion as to which stylist because I wasn't planning on sticking with curly styling.

Apparently the girl was just learning, because when I went back 3 months later for another cut, the very same girl who cut and styled my hair the last time was not cutting/styling but cleaning the salon, sweeping, washing hair and assisting the other girls. It was weird, she wouldn't look at me & kept her eyes to the floor

Trying not to read into anything here as I have NO idea of the inner workings of a salon. She had given me a layered cut and it was difficult because I was growing out a cut where one side of my head was much shorter than the other. It must've been technically difficult because the next stylist (another girl) also commented & seemed to have difficulty figuring a plan of action.

I sent an email to the salon the day after the pretty Cinderella girl had cut my hair, I got stopped by 2 strangers to tell me they loved my hairstyle as well as compliments from family. May have been because I was wearing it straight though. I have never gotten positive responses when my hair is curly, again, trying not to read into that too much

Anyhow, the girl I got that day did a great job on my hair, we cut it into a short pixie as I had given up the curls. I was happy with that for the next 3 haircuts about 12 wks apart.

Then I just stopped going. However, I'm planning on making an appointment in the coming weeks as I'm committed to wearing my curly hair & I don't care what anyone thinks of it. It's curlier now that it was when I first went, not sure if this will make a difference. However, I plan to ask for Erica & since I'm not in a hurry to get it cut, I'll wait for her schedule to open up if she's booked up like the last time. My hair *does* indeed shrink up a bit when dry, so maybe she'll cut it dry this time. When I first got it cut by her, my hair didn't 'spring' at all.

Will post before and after pics in case anyone's interested.

thanks so much for replying!!! yes, please post back after the next cut and with pics!!!!
just a comment on the deva products -- apparently you started using them right about the time they changed the formula, but did not change the label!!! in fact, i was using them and loved the original formulas, then, all of a sudden my hair looked really, really, really bad and after a few days i realized that i had a bottle with the new formulas.
so, don't give up on the curly method, just have to find the right products. or even a modified cg if that works.
here is something else interesting about deva cuts -- prior to say 2005/6 the training for outside stylists was 2 weekends. then it was just one day. now maybe you can learn to cut a curl, but how to cut differing curl patters, etc. is another story. so now they changed training again, and now the stylists taking the training have to do a demo cut to earn their 'inspired' certification.
like all professions, some are great, some are terrible.
