Well, I suspect that whether or not it would be a faux pas would depend on the ego of the stylist.
If the stylist is one who seems open to suggestion, appears to try to work with curls, and one who listens well, then I think it's worth a go.
Some stylists are really caught up in their own power, level of expertise, or skill set; seem to have difficulty understanding whose hair it is,;or think their way is the only way to "deal with" curly hair. I strongly suspect that those are not people who will be open to the suggestion.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, though.
