Question Under $80 in NYC??? Please help!! (and Beehive question)

Hi!

So this is the main reason I even found this site - I'm looking for salons in NYC (any borough!) that can do really curly (4a/4b, I think) hair.....on a budget. Now I have found some places with really good reputations....but they seem to run 125 - 300 for a cut! As someone who never paid more than $15 dollars for a simple cut I'm a little in shock.

$80 is probably my max. This is my first time getting my hair cut after the original Chop about seven months ago. My hair has some split ends, some weird hairs that don't curl anymore. It's not that long and I REALLY don't want someone ruining what I've managed to grow.....any recommendations??

PS, I've heard about Beehive Salon in BK, but it seems like all the good reviews are from at least a year ago, and then there are some more recent bad reviews? This is on this site, yelp, and citysearch. One review said that the good stylists had left because of new management. I also checked their webpage, and though they say they have "curly hair specialists" and have curly-hair products (deva, miss jessie) all the pics in their gallery are of girls with much, much looser curls (and no people of color at all ).....anyone have a more recent experience with them?

Any recommendations are really appreciated!! I can tell I really need at least a trim, but I don't want to wander into any old place where the only time they've seen curly hair is while applying a relaxer......

I don't know if you ever venture to New Haven, CT but I love Jo Bruno. I go to Luvena and she charges $45

Any Dominican hair salon. NY is teeming with them too! Depending on your hair length, it shouldn't be more than $45.

I think it may be a little difficult for me to go out of state because I don't have a car, but I'll look into this! Thanks

Hmmm, idk, I have definetly been to a lot of Dominican salons (well, I'm Dominican....i've ONLY ever been to those salons!), I was kind of avoiding them....all the Dominicans I've been to seem to really hate curly/kinky hair....straightening is more their thing and they're very good at that, but I don't know how much they would know about cutting/styling curly hair that's meant to STAY curly. I guess I could have a look at the local salons though, it doesn't hurt to ask - thanks for your reply!
