Default cut or hairloss

I went through a long time of losing hair and I'm thinking/hoping I'm getting over that, but I noticed lots of loss in density. I was one of you Poofballs, they always commented how thick my hair was. My husband, (they always want to make you happy) said it was because I was now styling with oils, and because now we live in NM as opposd to WI. ANyways. . . now going curly, I've obviousyl quit brushigng, I used to brush brush brush and have lots of not straight, not curly, just poofy hair. Also, because my 3 year old cut my hair when I was sleeping, I have layers majorly separated. Some on top and than a big drop and another, and then a big drop, like that. But my hair looks like still a lot of loss in volume, for me. Do you all think it's more the hair cut, and the fact that I'm not brushing all the curl/wave out to make it poofy (thus look more full) as to know where I get curl/wave formation and no more brushing, or do you think it's the fact that I've lost that hair?? Just wondering. It makes me sad, and I hope it's not hair loss. But on the bottom layer, you can see through the curls, there's no fullness there like when I look at all you curlies.
