I think you hit the nail on the head, Dusalocks. I know my hair. I may not know how to cut it, but after all these years, I do know my hair. I need to have that respected.

Korkscrew: If you are interested, search under "Saga of the Stylist", that is my "journey. I quit a salon I had gone to for over 10 years because I did NOT like my hair. Then I started getting consultations, based on reviews in my area on this site. One wanted over 100 bucks to condition my hair, talk about pushing. Then I went to the fancy salon that has the Deva stylists, and you know the rest of the story. Then I found a review here of Amber. I think the most I have ever paid Amber is 65 plus tip, and that was for a styling and coloring my roots, I have a LOT of silver, and it grows fast. I am quite satisfied with her. Here is the diff: she has her own chair in a place she share with other independent stylists, so she is not forking over half of what she earns to the salon, hence the high prices. She is very sweet, and knowledgeable, and does she know everything? No she does not, and that is fine by me because look what happens when stylists think they know it all. Roller jaw clamps and clips are the same, and for my money, they are foolproof and the most essential styling tool in my box, The metal clips are too difficult. Try the roller Jaws! Gretchen suggested them to me, and I love them. They make styling a snap. The only thing is, for me, once I put them in I dont touch them till my hair is almost dry, or I get frizz.

The same stylist who insisted I will not need to wash every day also, when I asked her if she felt I was telling her how to do her job (this was about my own products and my roller jaws) said Yes sort of. Amber, on the other hand said All my curly clients do different things to their hair and use different products, and I learn a lot from them. So there you have it.

Yes I think the product that did it for me may have been Mister Right. Whatever it was, it was a terrible waxy product that make me feel embarassed to have to go to work right after. I came home and immediately washed my hair! It was awful. She just loaded the product on, one after the other. I should have told her to stop. And, since you mentioned this issue, the first time she did my hair, she had nice long waves; when I saw her again (my other stylist was on maternity leave), she had short straight hair, and I have to say, I was pretty shocked and disappointed. What I do say about Deva that is good, is that I do love the Volumizing Foam, and wish I could find a product I love as much. I use a gel with it but it works great.
Yeah, I always plan to wash mine afterward too. I'm so grateful when I get a good cut that I usually look the other way when they product douse and incorrectly style it.

I just added the Volumizing Foam to my wish list. I see it has propylene glycol, which I'm a little allergic too, but it's lower on the list and it should be fine if I don't get too much on my scalp. I take it it goes on like mousse? What's the smell like?

The smell - I dont know, I guess it smells like their no poo. as for how it goes on, it is different consistancy than a mousse; mousses are like shaving cream, and the foam is more like Aveda's Phomollient. I use 1 1 /2 pumps, top/back and on each side. I really do like it.

I know most curly hair needs support from products, except those lucky enough to use conditioner only styling, but I dont think curls should be glued in place!
Thanks. It's officially on my wish list ... Sometimes I do condish only but it's also fun to play around w/stylers that make my curls look different (plumper, longer ... and always love volume enhancers).

Amaya: I went to a salon close to home that is not a Deva salon per se, but has at least a dozen supposed Deva stylists. Each time I left the salon, my hair felt awful, I mean so full of product it was sticky and felt like cotton candy. I brought my own products on one occasion, and the stylist read the ingredients, commented that one had "alcohol" ( it was steatyl alcohol, which is not like rubbing alcohol, and is also in the Deva products). So I felt like she was trying to disparage my choices so I would use the Deva products, which I did not like. I was charged in one appt. for a styling that I did myself - I had brought my roller jaw clips, and the stylist asked me to show her how I applied them. So I did. The only styling she did was to put me under a dryer. I was shocked to find out that I was being charged for a styling, and rather than protest, I just decided not to go back. I still purchase my Deva Foam there, because it is convenient for me, and it is a hard to find product. One of these days the owner's daughter, who works at the front, is probably going to comment on my hair, and then she is going to get the story; how I never knew what I was going to be charged; how one stylist felt threatened by my own products and my roller jaw clips; and how another charged me for a styling that did not happen. Long story to get to the point: you cannot force people to have integrity. They either do or they dont. I admire that you spoke up as you did; however, at some point, there can unfortunately be diminishing returns when people lacking integrity begin to feel threatened and turn the tables on you, now YOU are harrassing HER. You are not going to get satisfaction here. I am not being harsh, just telling it how I read it. They gave you a bad dye job. Dont go there again. Tell everyone you know not to go there. And move on. Ms Massey has made a ton of money - and continues to - on curlies like us who are desperate for stylists and products who understand our hair. You are one dissatisfied customer. She does not care. All you can do is what you are doing: get the word out, and do it in a matter of fact manner, or she will accuse you of more harassment. It is not fair, I agree, but the world is not a fair place. You got a bad dye job. I sympathize. But, you have hair. Some people do not, because of illness or other tragedy. The damaged hair can repair itself, and a lot of the damage can be cut off. Spend your energy finding someone you can work with. Thats my advice and since its free, it may be worth nothing.

So if you note persistance, or an aggressive approach to this, its because, yes I am on a mission, if companies learn there is repercussions to their actions, there will be in general a higher standard for all of us.

I guess thats just how I see it!

You're absolutely right and you have every right to make the company accountable. I thank you for warning me not to go there. I think Myrna was just saying to start fresh. I'd get rid of the blue locks, get a nice haircut elsewhere and start over. Put this behind you if it's causing you undue stress and money (you say $200, you poor thing) trying to fix it. Nobody thinks you're being whiney. And that's what Myrna was saying. You can't force Massey or DaSilva to develop a sense of integrity. Instead they turn the tables on you and say you're "harassing" them! The nerve! So keep spreading the word online but do do your best to leave the incident behind you. Everyday you wake up and look at your ruined bluish locks is going to cause you to be unhappy. And you should be happy. You have so much beautiful hair!

Thanks, Dusa, I think you pretty much said it. Amaya, there are some painful lessons here: 1. people often make claims which their behavior does not match, in both personal AND professsional contexts 2. If something bad happens when you are in someone's else's chair, tell them to STOP. Ask to see the manager. ( I think you did that). If you are not satisfied by what you hear, leave. Walk out. They wont like that? too bad. YOU didnt like how they mishandled you. 3. If you get a bad cut or color from a stylist, dont go back to that person to "fix" it, unless you have a long relationship with the stylist and for some reason she may have had an "off" day. 4. People who make the big bucks are less likely to hear you , because they dont need your money and they dont need your approval. Find a stylist who is willing to work with you. I personally would not have paid that bill. I would have said: I am appalled at the way my hair looks; you damaged it, and I asked you NOT to, so I dont see why I should fork over $200 for a messed up job. I think the hardest lesson is that we gals need to learn how to NOT BE NICE; we need to learn how to play hardball, and let others know we mean business. And I would have told them, if you are going to fuss about me not paying you $200, I will plaster my dissatisfaction all over my social media. Which is what you did. Anyhow, you had beautiful hair without it being lavender and magenta, and it will grow back and be beautiful again. I agree with Dusa. Get the blue cut off, and see if it can be restored to its natural shade.

Oh, I totally agree, Myrna! It took an experience like this when I was much younger to encourage me to speak up. A girl straight up butchered my hair and then flat ironed it straight afterwards to try and cover it up. I had a bad feeling all throughout and should've said something but I suppose I was hoping for the best. Then when I went to wear it curly again it was a disaster. An awful, uneven, frizzy disaster. I resolved then and there that if I ever felt uncomfortable in the salon seat again to just tell the person to stop. Amaya, you gave deva the benefit of the doubt in this case and went home and hoped your hair would get better. Understandable. It's a high class salon, you probably were so inspired by the Curly Girl Handbook (as was I) and naturally you were hoping for the best. But there was no way to salvage the situation. And even when you tried to get your money back they wouldn't accept responsibility. Then you wrote to the salon's owners and they practically spit in your face! We all understand. We'd all be furious. So you're doing what you can, but now you know what to do in the future. Don't play nice anymore. Play fair, but be tough as nails when it comes to those precious locks of yours. And be happy your hair is relatively long so even if you lose the blue there will be so much to work with. When that girl butchered my hair it was shoulder length and no way of fixing the shape without going extremely short.

Amaya, you can also report them to the Better Business Bureau. I believe it is listed under Consumer Protection in either State or Federal Government but I would just google Better Business Bureau for your state. YOu may be able to get your $$ back that way, by filing a complaint. And, it makes them look bad.
I think she did eventually get her money back (correct me if I'm wrong Amaya) but it took threatening to sue. Nevertheless that's an excellent suggestion because they totally botched your hair, Amaya! They owe you more than just a refund, they should've offered to fix it (like Massey did before she took it back). Or I'd want them to pay a penalty fee. Maybe $200 worth since that's what you've spent trying to fix it yourself. But ah well. I'm trying to help you move on and here I am getting all blistery again. Oh dear, this thread has gotten so long. Mea culpa. It just struck a chord with me I suppose. And the more people see it the better.

yes dusa! i did get my money back after a long fight...whats funny is yesterday i was having lunch next to the salon, and lo and behold as soon as I pass by, Sergio who did my hair "coincidentally" comes into the restaurant Im in too. I decide to just ignore it, I was over it and it was the first time since I had my hair colored that I was wearing it down because I was just so sick of updo's... and lo and behold as Im ordering he comes up to me, taps me on the should and says "Love your hair..." and walks outside....me and my boyfriend were just like IS HE SERIOUS?! my sister and mom were furious, especially cuz he sat outside the restaurant staring in at me for a while. I was just like ugh...what DIVA. Im not getting into this...clearly unprofessionalism runs in the deva chan family. Pathetic...
Its really simple, Amaya. Sergio is an arrogant *******. He is a member of this unfortunately rather large group.

BTW, last time I had my roots done, I told my stylist about your experience and she happened to have a computer in her salon, and wanted to see your results. She was pretty horrified, I think her word were something like "That is so terribly not right".

Oh MY!! THAT is downright scary! How in the HECK they could even let someone walk OUT of the salon that way is just SCARY as it is!

I've given up on the Deva thing. The first few times, the hair cut was better than any other cut I've had, though, after a few weeks, it flops and I end up having to put it up again (barrette/Pony Tail, etc).

I HATED walking out of the salon with my hair feeling chuck full of product. It was gross, but I just did my own thing when I got home.

Deva products have done NOTHING for me. I even tried the new gel that is supposed to be stronger than Arc, but it doesn't even begin to compare to Rock Hard Gelee. Conditioners (even Heaven in Hair) does nothing. I would rather fork out the $50 for Ouidad Deep than use that garbage.

Thought I liked Mister Right, but it's very hit and miss.

Just went for a Ouidad cut yesterday. Time will tell how this works for me!

Yep, Carrie, a lot of us have been down the Deva road; many of us share your feelings that we cannot stand leaving the salon with hair that is loaded up with products so much so that it feels like a bad wig or cotton candy. I use one Deva product, the foam, because I cant find a foam or mousse that is as good. I dont like the hype. And, there are many stylists out there who can cut curly hair wet or dry.
I have no advice as all the other curlies have suggested but all I can say is my apologizes. I hope you can update us all on your progress from this mess. It hurts to know how rude Ms. Massey was, especially since her book is seen as a 'curly girl bible.' Once again, I am sorry and I hope all this for you means that in the end your hair will end up better than before.

I am so sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I have been very fortunate with devachan. However I don't do coloring, I get my hair cut once a year, and it's pretty simple. Anna cuts it and she does a great job and I've been very happy with her. Anyway I applaud your efforts to get your money back and I'm happy that you got it back. I hope that your hair regains its beauty and its health.

I'm so glad I found this post, I also had a terrible experience with Devachan and Ms Massey, similar situation...unhappy with a crappy outcome and an aggressive pretty much attacking response. It it is a shame that the lack of professionalism and integrity is still there. Ms Massey touts herself as some kind of curl loving evangelist but the disrespectful and arrogant way that she behaves and runs the business is pathetic and hypocritical.

I am thinking about reporting to better business bureau as Myrna suggested.
It would help if anyone else with similar experiences also made a report so that this unprofessional group learn their lesson.

Wow they really stuffed up did'nt they? Good on you for standing your ground and getting the refund. I agree with all the comments in this thread. One look at the photo and they should have rushed to fix it. Ms massey claims to care about hair and understand how important it is to people but it does'nt seem to be that way. Alot of people dont complain and just put up with bad service. But we really need to hear stories like this so we can make an educated decision on if we want to go their salons or not.
