I have had great cuts from Gloria at Salon Hermosa in San Diego (and mbeckhhp has as well.) Have you tried her yet? I have had friends with 2, 3, and 4 type curls go to her and all have had good results. Good luck!

Jenn doesn't have curly hair her self but Vickie does. For the $ I will drive back to SD in a few months and have Jennifer do my 3rd Deva cut.
Jennifer's email is j.sparano@yahoo.com
and # 619-244-6435. There are several reviews under the SD section.
Good luck.
Thanks for the information on Jennifer, ocwavy. I have been to Vickie Vela at Curls on Top in Laguna Beach 3 times now and she is really good...passionate about what she does and always does a good job with my Deva cut and style. But even though she's good, I still think she's a little too pricey. Plus, she always seems a little reluctant to actually cut much hair off. My hair looks best on the shorter side - it curls better and has more volume - it's just the way it is. Wish there was another good alternative in the OC, but another Deva trained stylist that I tried from the OC was not very good. Vickie was in a different league than her. Just hate to pay so much $$$ for a haircut.

Just a little note to say that Beverly Neeland is moving back to Sacramento. I was actually very happy with her haircuts and will be said to see her go. If you want to get a last appointment with her while she's in SD, her last day is October 22. Here is the email she sent to her clients:

Beverly is moving back to Sacramento in October
Thank you San Diego curlies for your loyal business. My two years in SD has been fabulous, but it is time to focus on my most important project, my daughter. I am moving back to Sacramento within the next month.

My last day of services in San Diego is October 22.* I will be opening up as many days as possible, with extended*hours to accommodate last-chance appointments.*
*
To all my Sacramento-area clients:* I am looking for salon space and a 2-3 bedroom house near midtown, Oak Park, East Sac - somewhere in the grid.**If you have any leads on either places, please call or email me.

I left a message for Jenn Sparano today but haven't heard back from her. I was going to try to schedule a consult with her. Does anyone know what she is currently charging for a haircut?
thanks

Jen is getting married this weekend so you may not hear from her for a while. I've been going to her for about 2 years now and she does a great job with my hair. She charges her old clients $50. I think her prices may have gone up though for new clients. She is deva certified and cuts hair dry. She's the fourth stylist I've been to in SD and I'm very happy with her. Hope that helps.

I have my first appointment with her this coming Thursday, and, like smblossom said, she had told me that this was her wedding/honeymoon week, so she's probably really busy right now. I'm a new client, and she told me that she charges $50 for a cut. She was great in working me into her schedule when I contacted her last month, even though things are obviously really hectic for her these couple of weeks.

Smblossom, I'm so glad you like her! I'm excited to go to her next week!

Will look forward to hearing how you like your cut from Jennifer. I am about due for another and will be heading south to SD from OC again. Glad I am not in need now.

I'll definitely check in after my cut! I'm excited, but nervous, too! :-)

thank you SMBlossom and Leanne. If you hadn't told me about Jenn's wedding I would have been wondering....or calling her again.

I'm getting to the stage where I'm needing a trim. I used to have long layers but my current (Deva trained?) stylist seems to have pretty much eliminated the layers. Now I need to decide whether to continue with her dry cuts and (a) ask her to put some long layers in or (b) say nothing and let her do her thing....just asking for a trim.
Or go to someone new and ask for long layers.
I don't need volume and the top being flat isn't really an issue because I pretty much wear it with the sides up or with a headband all the time.
My hair is very think and somewhat coarse.
What do you think? Sorry is this isn't the right place for the question but a couple of you were nice enough to respond to a question from me a while back. thanks

Your hair is really pretty, sdkitty! Based on what you said, though, it sounds like you prefer to have some layers in your hair. Can you maybe find some photos of hairstyles that you can bring to your stylist? Would adding a few longer layers just near your face give you the look you're after?

My hair is pretty layered just because I'm growing it out from a really short cut, but I like how the layers add dimension. As my hair gets longer (I want to let it go to my mid-back), I'm thinking that I'll keep some of the longer layers near my face since they make my long face look a bit softer.

Hope that helps a bit!

So the results are in and Beverly is out. I gave it a few days, and with my usual styling techniques, could not get a decent look. I saw a couple friends who asked me "whats going on with you hair?" No one wants to to hear that...Luckily, a few days ago, I went on vacation to where I moved from and got my hair done by my favorite hair guru and he was able to fix it He looked at me and said "o my god, what happened?"

As he was cutting my hair he told me that my hair was way over texturized, which was causing my once luscious curls to split off into wavy kinky pieces and blending together. I will be posting a before and after pic. I did email Beverly expressing my upset and she offered to correct my hair. I told her I would rather have a refund and she agreed. So, customer service was great, but I lost length, which you all know sucks in curly land.

The pic where I look smiley and happy is what my hair looked like before Beverly cut it. The pic with my unhappy face is what Beverly did to it. What blows me away is that the pic was taken a few days after she cut it, but it looks like I havent had a haircut in years and am in desperate need. Btw, I have never had the shelf look before....
I'm so sorry to hear that you were so unhappy! Even though you lost some length, I bet you'll be back to your beautiful curls really soon!!

thanks Leanne
I'm more concerned about the layers in the back than around my face...with my hair as long as it is now, it seems a bit much to wear it loose so it's almost always got the sides up.

Sounds like you're really leaning towards the layers. Can I ask what stylist you're going to? Perhaps it's time to change it up since the person you're seeing isn't quite giving you the shape that you want. The DevaCurl Facebook page has a lot of cute cuts on it, and maybe scrolling through a few or finding some photos here might help you better explain what you're looking for in the overall shape.

Hi,

I am wondering if you and any others who have had a cut by Jen Sparano would be willing to post a photo of your cut. With Beverly Neeland moving away, many of us are looking for a new stylist and as they say, a picture is worth...

Thanks!

I just got back from my appointment with Jen, and LOVED her!! She is so sweet and great, and even though she knew that I was familiar with the CG way, still took time to educate me and talk about the best way to style my hair.

At the beginning of my appointment, she spent time talking to me about my color and style, etc. Since I'm growing it out, I told her that I wanted to keep it as healthy as possible, so she darkened it back to my normal color with a demi-gloss to cover the gray, and only put in a few highlights. I love it!!

I actually like how she did it even better than how Vickie did it, and, like Ocwavy said, Jen is about 1/3 of the cost. (Did I mention that I love my hair?! )

Let me go take some photos and see if I can figure out how to post them . . . .

OK, let's see if this works. I've never posted a photo, so I hope that they don't turn out to be too gigantic! (Apologies, too, for the weird looks on my face. I hate photos of me!)

Edited: Sorry about the flash in the second one, but I couldn't get a sharp photo of the front of my hair with the flash turned off. Let me know if you want me to try to get the front of the cut again and I'll see what I can do . . . .

OK, this one is better since you can see the overall shape of the cut. (I can't figure out how to delete the one with the flash, so sorry about having so many photos!)

Your hair looks great Leanne. Thanks for posting pics. I finally got Jenn on the phone but with her location and the fact that she doesn't work Saturdays, it's probably not the right fit for me.
I found someone via the Deva Curl Facebook page who is in Alpine....more convenient for me. I'm going to get a trim with her and see how it goes.
