We were in Carlsbad for a week on a business/pleasure trip.

Last year we combined business & pleasure & rented a funky beach place right on the sand in Carlsbad and stayed for a month. We rode our bikes everywhere---really love it there! This year we were only able to stay for a week, but still was fun. I'm so glad it worked out to get my hair cut with Angela while I was there!

Just wanted to put in a good word for Sondra Goodwin at Renee's Uptown Salon up here in Alpine. SD KItty mentioned her in Sept but I didn't see a follow-up since then. I can't remember where online I found Sondra (I thought it was on NC.com) but never mind that as I'm so glad I did! I made an appt for a free consult which was incidentally today. She's very pleasant and listened to my concerns (gripes?) about straight haircuts that left my curls grasping for identity. She took her time figuring out my texture, pattern, etc and her recommendations were so intuitive that it made perfect sense to stay for my first Deva cut! She cut me dry, reworking the back to balance the overall shape and then did a gentle low-poo and conditioner followed by a soothing scalp massage... yummmy! She scrunched out the drips and very lightly trimmed a bit here and a bit there to even things up... really, teensy tiny snips... so everything blends as it continues to grow back. She scrunched in an aloe vera glaze and a generous palmful of mousse (both sold in the salon) and then diffused me, head between my knees towards the last. I'm just getting my head (!) around products and the mousse seemed to work better that the AnGel and GF clean gel that I've been using (if my avatar posts, it was taken AS (after Sondra). I couldn't be more pleased to have finally found a stylist who "gets" my curls and wanted to spread the word for other frustrated curly girls who live in East County and the Mountain Empire. She charges $35-$45 depending on your curl pattern and the salon carries DevaCurl as well as other organic products. That's so wonderful, Silvercurlz, that you found her and are so pleased with your cut! Isn't it amazing the difference a good stylist can make??!

I've been to Angela twice now, and am still really pleased! Last time, she didn't cut it (I'm trying to grow it out) and only needed to touch up the roots; the red color on the rest of the hair is still pretty vibrant. She's a great alternative for those who live in North County! I have my next appt. with her in mid-April, and can post more pics then if anyone would like me to.[/QUOTE]

Hi Leanne!

Have you had your second cut with Angela yet and if so were happy with the results? I'm finally ready for a cut and I'm going to call her for an appointment. I hope to hear you are still satisfied with her Deva cuts.

Thanks!

I've been wearing my hair up all week, and forgot to take a pic when I did wash it. Here's a pic I took a few days *before* my last cut with Angela. I hadn't had it cut since December since I'm growing it out to my mid-back, but you can see that the cut held up nicely.

I promise that I'll try to get a recent pic posted when I wash again on Sunday or Monday.

Hi Leanne,

Your hair is beautiful! It has grown so long and looks lovely! I had my haircut/trim with Angela and I'm still undecided. I have only washed it once since getting it cut so I need to wait a little longer before I make my decision. This is only the 2nd deva cut I have had. The first one was with Vicki Vela in December and I walked out of there feeling really gorgeous. I did not like the way I looked when I left Angela. I don't think she used enough product on me. My hair looked more stringy than bouncy. I also feel like my ends in the back were thined out too much. They just don't seem to be as curly as before my cut. With all the deva cuts you have had if you had to rate them on haircut alone, without considering price or location, who would you say gave you your best cuts?
Hi CurlsForMe,

Aw, thank you for the nice words about my hair!

Now that I've lived for a week with my second Deva cut from Angela, I'm not as happy as I was the first time she cut it. I've been really liking how my hair looks for the past six or seven months (which is a minor miracle for me since I never knew that I had real waves until about eighteen months ago!), but this last cut has had me feeling pretty unhappy with how it looks. I'm wondering if the first Deva cut I had with Angela was better since I had just had it cut with Jen S. a few months prior; it could have been that Angela was following the lines that had already been cut into it.

With this second cut, I had also wanted some bangs, but Angela didn't cut them. I ended up going in a few days later to have her cut them in, but she just gave me shorter front pieces, which I've been fighting with since the length on them is really odd. I feel like my hair hasn't been looking very good.

Plus, I really like how Vickie and Suzanne *only* cut curly clients; I think that gives them a much broader knowledge base about how to handle curly girls, and they also know the Deva products really well.

Angela is sweet and kind, and she's only about 10 minutes from my house, but I'm thinking that perhaps I may return to Vickie for my next cut. I've been thinking about coloring my own hair anyways since the upkeep would be cheaper and easier, so I'm thinking that perhaps I can just make the trek up to Vickie two or three times a year.

I guess that's a long answer to your question! :-) If I had to rank them in terms of cut, I'd say that Vickie and Suzanne gave me the best cuts, then Jen, then Angela. (I would have ranked Angela higher than that after my first cut with her, but, as I said, this second cut hasn't been as good.)

In terms of color, though, Angela has done the best color for me! Suzanne ended up dying my hair an orange color; she didn't charge me, but I still had to live with orange-ish hair for several months! Vickie did my color too light, so she had to dye it a second time. (I think I ended up being there for almost 3 1/2 hours!) While Jen has more experience than Angela doing Deva cuts, she colored my hair a shade that was too dark for me, and I felt washed out and miserable-looking until my next appointment, which was with Angela.

As I've been typing all this, I think I've talked myself into going back to Vickie for a cut, and doing my color myself. I've also been subscribed to the thread about the new Deva salon in LA that opened up, so may think about going there . . . . Decisions, decisions!

Sorry, too, for the long post!

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for the open and honest response, appreciate it! I agree that Angela is a sweetheart! She is also very close to me, about 20 minutes and her prices are awesome! I can't say she gave me a bad haircut, it just wasn't the same as my previous deva cut with Vickie. I need to give it some more time since some of it may be due to the weather. I'm so sorry to hear you were not happy with your last cut. It's so frustrating when you like your hair better before you pay the money to get it done again. I too am thinking of making the trek up to Vickie's for my next haircut and then in between I will just do my own trims. I didn't know a deva salon opened in LA. I will need to check it out. Keep me posted on where you go and I'll do the same! Take care!!

I might go back to Vickie, too; my next appt. with Angela is just for root touch-up, and I wasn't going to get it trimmed again until maybe August. I think I'll make the trek to Laguna or the Deva salon next time.

I feel bad that my recommendation led to a cut you're unhappy with. I'm sorry!

Hi Leanne,

Please don't be sorry about your recomendation. I am somewhat new to the curly girl method. Wearing it curly 100% since October 2011. Prior to that I got my haircut for 12 years by an awesome stylist that cut it wet, very precision cuts and it looked great with blown out, looked moppy when curly with the very occasional "good" curly day. I think my biggest problem back then was a combination haircut and products. I've tossed all my straight hair days stuff out and gave some of it away, since it was a small fortune, LOL! I've been using Deva products 100% now since October and I'm getting ready to experiment with these too since it seems a lot of curlies are getting beautiful resultes on much less expensive brands, plus I think it's good to change products now and then. So your recomendation was certainly not a bad thing, just part of my new curly journey. One more thing I forgot to ask you. Does Angela recommend that you cut your hair more often than the typical deva cuts? She told me I should return in 8-10 weeks, and not to go over 10. When I saw Vickie in late December she told me I wouldn't likely need another cut/trim for 4 months and she wouldn't expect to see me until at least April. I thought that was interesting.
Thanks for the kind words, CurlsForMe! It's funny -- I made the opposite journey of yours! I started with Curl Junkie and some other brands, and only started using Deva products after I'd been following the CG routine for about nine or so months.

Yes, I heard the same thing from Vickie and Angela -- Vickie said I would only need to come in every four months or so, whereas Angela said I should come in every 8-10 weeks. I think that the less frequent cuts with Vickie means that the price would almost balance out between them.

I tried to find some info about the new Devachan salon in LA, but all I can find is a page number. It would be nice to check out the stylists and their specialties on a proper website before booking!

Do you also have to worry about color?

At this point, I'm thinking that I might book an appointment with Vickie for some time in August, and then try to do my hair color on my own . . . .

Hi Leanne,

Yes, I kind of came into the curly girl method a bit backwards... after having my hair cut for 12 years by my same stylist that blew it out beautifully I was FINALLY ready for a change. I could not seem get her to do what I wanted and cut my hair for a curly look, (her comments were always, you can always wear it curly, I need to cut it wet and blow it out so I can see if it's even, etc.. ) so I knew it was time for a different stylist. I was talking with girl who did hair and I also I knew her as a friend, and she told me she was great with curly hair so I gave her a shot. She also cut it wet, she did shake it out a lot while cutting it to see how the layers were so I was hoping I would get a better result. She blew it out with one of those diffusers that looks like a sponge sock that fits over your blowdryer. I left with the flat top, pyrimid look... it was awful. Went straight home and washed it, (still not using Deva products and my shampoo was Euphora, which has sulfates, even though it's not a huge amount). I was back to that moppy, look with the added stacked layers effect. I was really bummed!! I knew there must be a better way and that's when I started researching different methods of cutting curly hair and the two I finally decided upon that I wanted to look at and try were Ouidad’s method of cutting and a Deva cut. The more I read the more I decided Ouidad was probably not the option I wanted to try and a Deva cut just made so much sense to me. I looked up a Deva stylist in my area and at that time Teresa Larkin in Bonsail was the closest to me so I made an appointment for a consultation. She told me I didn't need a cut when I saw her, at the very least she could do what was called "oxygenate" the ends. She said I would be amazed at the results I would get if I used the Deva 3 step. She showed me how to clip and how to dry my hair with a micro fiber towel or paper towels and then I purchased the 3 step from her and I also ordered the Curly Girl Handbook from Amazon. I went home and tried the 3 step products and I was shocked at the difference the products made in my hair. It was a HUGE positive difference. I was so excited. I felt like a bouncy, cute curly girl for the 1st time ever and I’m 43 years old! J When it was finally time for a haircut I did some more research and I didn’t want Teresa to cut it because she seemed new to Deva and I wanted someone with lots more experience and that’s why I picked Vickie. Anyway, you know the rest of the story!

In terms of color, I don’t have grey so I don’t color my hair. Although I do have highlights and they were done back in October so they are growing out and getting really blond looking. I have dark brown hair so I will need to do something soon. I’m thinking I might try the pintura method, or I might just do away with highlights all together and try to go with a color that is my natural color. I did read on the Jessicurl site (at least I think that’s where it was) that Robert Craig is a good option to try for a do it yourself at home color. Hair Color, Hair Care and The No More Bad Hair Days Kit by Robert Craig Salon Products, Ltd. I’ve also done Henna before several times on my hair in various shades and I liked the effect, plus it gradually faded out so there was zero regrowth look for me. I know there is a line of Henna at the Frasier Farms in Vista that is recommended for permanent grey coverage. It might be worth checking out for you. Take Care!
Hi CurlsForMe,

It's so interesting to read people's stories about how they found the CG method! Like you, my stylists always straightened my hair, and I've been miserable with it my entire life since I never could straighten it myself like they could. I've always kept it super short, until about two years ago, when a new stylist encouraged me to grow it out. When it got a few inches past my ears and I noticed waves appearing, I looked into styling it -- and discovered the whole CG method! It honestly has changed my life since I'd been pretty unhappy with my hair for all of my adult life. I now understand why I could never get it to be straight -- because I don't have straight hair!

Thanks for the color tips and recommendations! I've had to color my hair for a few years because of the gray, but it's gotten worse ever since I turned 40 last summer, and now I have to go in pretty often to cover my roots. I looked into the Robert Craig color and am thinking of trying it. It looks like it's pretty easy to use, and a lot of the gals around here recommend it! I even got some great help to a question I posted about it.

So you know how I was saying that I haven't been as happy with my hair ever since my last cut? Well, today I actually liked it! Silly, finicky hair! I think I will head back to Vickie in August, though, or try the Devachan Salon in LA; I like having someone do my hair who is knowledgeable about the Deva products. I've been really liking them, and wish I had tried them sooner!

Vickie and Suzanne also just "oxygenated" my ends, but the slight trim was amazing! I still feel like all the Deva stylists are really heavy-handed with the products (I hate feeling like I have a lot of stuff in my hair), but it's nice to see how they use each product.

It's been fun chatting!

I'm very happy with Sondra's haircuts. She cuts my hair wet. When she and I first met, I told her I just want my layers blended properly.....whether done wet or dry doesn't matter to me. She gets it right and she's very nice too.
Nice to hear you like her too Silvercurlz.
