Hi Curly San Diegans!
I have a wonderful stylist who I love (Gloria at Salon Hermosa) but I just found out that she will be moving overseas in January 2013 for a year or two So I am now starting to research where I'll be going next year.
I'm looking for someone who does dry cuts and and really takes off very, very little. For me, the sign of a good trim is when people say "your hair looks fabulous today" rather than "you got your hair cut!"
For those of you who have had Deva cuts and posted pictures, your hair looks beautiful but I'm wondering if you'd be willing to post your before pics, too My main trouble is finding someone who can take off very little length.
Thank you!

Hi slivola,
I'm sorry to hear that Gloria will be moving away since I know how much you like her! I don't have any before pics to share (wish I did!), but all of the local Deva stylists I've been to (Vickie, Susanne, Jen, and Angela) have taken very, very little off when I've gone to each one. I've explained to them that I'm growing my hair out, so they've just "oxygenated" the ends (a Deva term) and took off very little.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, LeanneM, that's very helpful. Could you explain what exactly a Deva cut is? My stylist created her own technique because she said the deva cut didn't work for all curly hair types (and I have 3 different ones on my head.) Thanks so much!

Hi slivola, A Deva cut is just a dry cut where the stylist cuts your curls based on their unique pattern. Deva-trained stylists have to have gone through Deva training in NY. If you do a search for "Deva cuts" on here, you'll find a ton of info.

Thank you, I will search for it. It sounds similar to what I've been getting except my stylist isn't Deva trained.

Hi again,
I was just thinking: if you type "Meet your Deva stylist" into the YouTube search bar, you'll get a bunch of videos that you show you stylists from the Devachan salon in NYC. There are a ton of before and after pics, so they might be fun for you to check out.

I totally am right with you slivola! I've been going to Gloria for about a year now... and then I got her note about moving overseas.
I wasn't sure how long I was going to go without a trim, so I had a friend who is a stylist do it, but it's just not the same when they aren't accustomed to cutting curly hair.
I suppose if I just get my hair cut less often, then the price would even out, but man you just couldn't beat Gloria for the quality & the price.

Anyone try Kendall Suniga at Revive Salon & Spa?
Hi San Diego curlies,
My amazing Gloria is closing her Salon Hermosa for several years while she moves to Japan with her husband who is getting stationed there. So my search for a replacement is on! I found amazing reviews for Kendall Suniga at Revive Salon & Spa. You can read them in the link below. Has anyone had a cut from her?
Revive Salon & Spa in San Diego, California (United States)
Thank you!

I haven't been to her, but those look like really good reviews! I'd say to try her out!

Sounds really good to see this thread. It's been a long way down for me looking at the best hairstylist salon that can do for my hair makeup and I was glad to find some good and interesting deals from you. Keep it up!

Gloria is staying in San Diego!!
Hi Curlies,
I just found out that Gloria is not moving overseas after all! She is taking clients and charges $25 for a dry cut or $40 for a wash, cut & blow dry. Here's her info in case any of you want to give her a try or go in for a consult (you can also read reviews under "Salon Hermosa" at this site.)

When I first contacted Jenn Sparano over a year ago, I wasn't able to get an appointment. But recently I tried again and I'm so glad I did. She is in a small salon in Loma Portal (Lynnel's).
I went for a haircut with Jenn two weeks ago. She was wonderful. She spent a lot of time making sure she understood what I wanted and communicating what she would do. I wanted to retain most of my length but to have better layering and more fullness. Jenn said taking about two inches off the bottom would be optimum but she could do less. I told her to go ahead and do what she thought best.
She went through the Deva process of cutting dry, washing, blotting with paper towels, etc. All the time she was explaining what to do at home (if I want to) and making suggestions for alternatives (e.g., using "sham-wow" instead of paper towels for blotting).
I'm so glad I went to Jenn. This may be the best cut I've had. I got the fullness back, great curl forumation and it doesn't even look any shorter.
Jenn does the full Deva styling for the first appointment and then after that, if you want to save $, she will just cut dry and skip the washing part.
Thanks to the NC members who recommended Jenn.

Great cut with Gloria yesterday
I just had a great cut yesterday with Gloria at her new home salon (Salon Hermosa.) She is still $25 and I feel so lucky she didn't move after all. As I was leaving, I met LexLioness who was arriving for her appointment. Wow, what a thick Lioness mane!
I'm attaching pics of my hair today post cut. I dried it using more of a Deva method with raking products through and blotting rather than putting my hair in a turban with the towel and then combing each product through (thanks to sdkitty for those tips!)

I'm so glad you two have gotten good haircuts! Yay!
I've actually been going back to my former stylist in Encinitas; she was trained last year to do dry curly/wavy cuts through Redken. I think that the cuts aren't as good as the Deva cuts I've had, but she's just 15 minutes away from me, which makes it really convenient. I may go back to Jenn or Vickie this summer . . . .

Leanne, I hear you about convenience! Gloria is only 10 minutes from me so that's hard to beat. But I have to admit that I used to travel 1 1/2 hours for a haircut when I was living in Japan because my stylist there moved. A good stylist is worth following!
