San Diego Salons & Stylists

So sorry for the double post everyone, but I just saw this post on clipping in the general forum and was wondering if that's what you were describing upthread about how MaryAnn clipped you, JodyGK. Are you still around?

chicpower was asking yesterday about clipping and I have had several PMs asking me how I clip since I no longer suffer from flat top. Since TS Faye has decided to park over the city of Atlanta for the day, and golfing was out of the question, I have too much time on my hands and decided to take some pics!

http://public.fotki.com/momof3curls/

I describe my method in the pictures, but basicaly I pretend I am going to wrap the hair around my finger, but instead I just create a "hump" and clip it at the bottom. This has worked wonders for my flat top.

Duckbill clipped at the top in a way I'd never seen but I love the result. She took strands of my hair, found the natural loop and clipped the looped strand so the loop stood straight up. This method gave me more lift at the top than I'd ever gotten by just clipping close to the scalp. Hope I can duplicate this at home.

Hi Koukla -- yes, this sounds very much like what MaryAnn did to create lift for me the first time I went to her. I've yet to be able to duplicate this method at home unfortunately. Between my arthritis and my basic styling ineptitude, I have less trouble just clipping close to the root. I'll be making my next appointment with her in the next couple weeks, so hopefully she can give me "clipping for dummies" lessons then.

And TwistedChick, if indeed you are who PMed MaryAnn's info to Koukla, thank you too! I'm in San Marcos, so her salon is very convenient for me!

Heya guys, I'm Jessica and I am new to this site. I had a traumatic experience with my hair about 2 weeks ago...bad color job and bad cut, so now my once beautiful curls are just ...BLAH!
So from reading this thread I made a call to Jen and E-Factor for the 19th. I'll take some pics and keep you all posted.
please send me any good hair vibes you may have!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

I will definitely post some pics before and after the cut. Since that's when I'll be OFFICIALLY going all out CG.

I leave to go back to Japan from my vacation here in Oct. so .....just in case..... I made my appt for the 19th of this month (sept) so I'd have time to MAKE sure my hair gets taken care of before I become a Hermit again in Japan.

I thought I'd start a thread where we SD curlies and wavies can dish about the stylists we've been to here and give kudos or warnings, as appropriate. ;P I haven't actually been to too many, since I'm a little phobic about bad cuts or color, but here's where I've been:

Ulta - Don't. Just...don't. It's like every bad to mediocre SuperCuts you've ever been to. D+

Michael David Hair Design - I went to Audra here for a long time, but became gradually pretty dissatisfied with her level of service and the fact that she's one of those stylist that wields a flat-iron like an extension of her silicone-coated arm. She was very unenthusiastic about helping me go wavy when I started leaning that way. Buh-bye. C-

Aveda Young Attitudes - Brandi (I think.) Well-meaning, but completely clueless about how to treat and cut curly hair differently than straight, even with a curly mother. Also, unprofessional enough to not cancel or reschedule with me when she had to be out on the day of one of our appointments. I ended up being foisted off on some random stylist after I got there, who was even more clueless. Ironically, I almost passed out from the fumes of a perm going on across the room. C

Diamantes - Kirk. Sweet, seems to have had some experience with Deva training, even though he doesn't show up on their salon/stylist locator. I'd probably still be going to him if he'd listen when I say I don't like the straighter under-bits of my hair to hang down, and please make it even. But he is decent, as are his prices. B-

London Calling - Jody Snyder. Is there a special level in Dante's Hell for really bad stylists? Because this woman needs to be in it. She butchered my hair, and I'm pretty sure she also fried it with cr@ppy color - not too sure about that because I'm strangely hazy on that part now. Maybe I have hair PTSD from it all. She's also given a really lousy cut to someone else that I know of, and then asked them not to give her a bad review here. In case it's not obvious, this is the stylist I've mentioned elsewhere. F-

Travis Parker Salon - Franco. Actually pretty darn good. He's the education director there, super sweet, and good at cuts so far. He doesn't cut dry and loves his 'cones, but he's great at color and blowouts or updo's - really great. He's been highlighting me using the balayage technique (painting on, like pintura) and I'm loving the effect. Mostly I'm still looking for someone else even while going to him because I have yet to get a really good dry/deva cut and I'm curious to see if it really improves my wave pattern at all, and because he's pricey. B+/A-

And, here's who/where I'm considering going to next, in vague order of preference (subject to change after I consult with them, of course). Any thoughts/recommendations/warnings about any of them to help me cull the herd?

Kate at Hairspray - found several good reviews from curlies on Yelp.com, and now I'm very curious.

Chuck or Jenn at E-Factor - a good curly review on Yelp and Deva certified, too.

MaryAnn Castaneda at Taglio Salon (in Escondido) - a personal recommendation from a fellow forumite through PM and Deva certified. She'll likely drop down in rank if her prices aren't very reasonable, though, considering the distance I'd have to drive.

Suzanne at Re:Vive - recommended by CurlyBel on a different thread, and Deva certified. Hesitant here because she's pricey and the salon she's at has a couple questionable reviews on Yelp. (Not her, the salon in general.) Plus, she charges $30 for the consult (applicable to the cut) just because it's Deva? Do I have that right? Hmmm.

Hair Drezzers on Fire or MaryJane Salon - fabulous reviews on Yelp, not sure if they're worth anything yet, though.

Soooo, anybody else??

Tamara Mooney at Tasha's Beauty Salon. Amazing color, haircuts and styles. I've been one of her clients for years. I'm so glad that I found her through this website!

Well as most of you know I had what I thought was very nice curly hair and then decided to get a color and cut and the lady ended up razor cutting my nice curls. I didn't know then that that was a BIG NO NO. Since then I have become CG and found this website.
I went yesterday to get my first DevaCut to fix the "Hackjob" I got from the razoring.
I went to Jennifer Sparano, here in San Diego. She was So nice and very informative and she did a great job of getting the yucky ends out without having to shave my head! and.... it only cost me FIFTY DOLLARS!!!!!!!! I would definitely recommend her to everyone!!!
pics are in my Fotki!

CurlyBel,
I WAS 3b and right now I think I am more about 2b-ish, my hair tends to get curlier and more "ringletty" as it gets longer too. I got some Deva products when i went to see Jennifer so I'm gonna see how I do using those. I only got the smaller bottles and not the huge, jumbo ones.
Jen was great and she'll talk you through everything. I know she does do color also, she even mentioned that she does the "pintura" method of coloring/highlighting. If you want to get color from her I would suggest calling and letting her know so she could either reschedule you or have you come in earlier because she did mention to me that she likes to do the coloring BEFORE she does the cutting.
I had gone somewhere else for the color, as a matter of fact, the person who colored my hair was the same person who RAZOR cut my hair. I love the color but the razor cutting is what made me have to go a lot shorter than I wanted to.

So she either took the time to straighten even though I was waiting, or - my guess - she's a liar about having curly hair. UNPROFESSIONAL OR UNETHICAL
  • complained about problems she was having with her ex husband and son during the entire time. UNPROFESSIONAL
  • didn't want to use the products I'd brought in, saying hers were better and calling Biolage (mine) "gel for dummies" RUDE
  • used conditioner containing silicone, and styling products containing silicone even though I told her I don't do that, and told her not to use products with those ingredients. UNETHICAL
  • pushed those same horrible products throughout, though I had told her I was satisfied with my own and wasn't interested in buying from her. ANNOYING
  • tried to roughly towel dry my hair - with a terry cloth towel - causing frizz. INCOMPETENT
  • started to blow-dry my hair and when I reminded her I had told her over th phone she'd need to diffuse, she revealed she didn't own a diffuser. She had to ask two of the other stylists if they had one she could borrow, and then didn't even know how to put it on her dryer - I had to do it for her. This from a self-professed "curly hair expert". INCOMPETENT
  • left the left side of my hair over an inch longer than the right side, and very badly stair-stepped and chopped the rear layers. The shortest "layer" was three curls that were barely three inches long at the crown, when I'd told her to do gentle long layers and nothing shorter than chin length. INCOMPETENT
  • gave me greenish color when it was supposed to be dark neutral blonde - I had to pay extra someplace else to get corrective color to fix what she'd done. INCOMPETENT
If this @#$%& really is the best stylist you've ever been to, you have astonishingly low standards. Even the most generous assessment anyone else in this thread has managed to give her is lukewarm at best. My information is not wrong. You know how I know that? Because it's my information.

But thanks for making my point for me about fake CurlSalons reviews and posters with a different kind of axe to grind so very well. Because you can't really think no one would have noticed that your review on the CurlSalons section had been one of the ones removed in the revamp (I remember your name, Marci, and your insubstantive yet gushing review style). Or that your first shill for Jody on the forums was posted in the forum feedback section because you didn't even take the time to look around the forum to know where to post it. Or that you then felt compelled to come back and post another review here yet again only a couple of weeks later - even though your topic had been since moved to the appropriate area. But no posts anywhere else on the site, and your public profile showed you had no activity on the forums except on those two dates. Profile created on the day of the first post, no activity between posts, and no activity since this second post - not even lurking. (Yeah - I checked.) Hmmmmm. I wonder why that is?

If there are others who truly had good experiences with Jody Snyder, I'm relieved for them. I'll take their reviews on a case-by-case basis and consider the source, as I've done with the other comments here about her - even though I personally would rather set my hair on fire than let her touch it again. But as far as I'm concerned, your posts on the topic of Jody Snyder are fake and I'll take them with a big fat salt lick.

!!!!!!!!!!
So Sorry,I just fixed it. The PW should work fine now!

CurlyBel (or anyone), is that about how long it takes to get in to see Jennifer? Three to four-ish weeks - or is that just when you preferred your appointment to be? I'm not quite ready to get my hair cut but I think it should be sometime around Halloween - and before the subsequent winter-holiday craziness - and I was wondering how much time I should factor in before I call for an appointment.

But I didn't want to hurt her feelings, just the same.

What I ended up doing was to use one of her service issues that had nothing to do with her skills, which was how hard it had become to get an appointment with her (instead of how she wasn't highlighting the back of my head like I was paying for ), and I turned it around on myself. I said there were some changes in my life recently and I just really needed more flexibility than that for a while when scheduling appointments. It was quite true, it just wasn't the whole - or main - truth.

Is there anything else that could be a valid reason that has nothing to do with her personally, that you'd feel comfortable using - like that you need something closer to work for convenience because you're working longer hours lately, or the economy is killing you and you need to "take a break" from her prices for a while, or something like that?
yep, the old "it's not you, it's me"

I could use the distance excuse. The thing is my DH goes to her, and even my girls will occasionally get their haircut with her too. Maybe I'll have DH tell her I'm trying somebody closer, have him do the dirty work!
