Salons in Dallas/North Dallas Area

I saw a thread recently that included two salons in the local Dallas/North Dallas area, but was hoping perhaps there could be a single thread with a comprehensive list (to update)/discussion of salons providing successful outcomes to other local CGs.

Perhaps we can find a way to include locations including all kind of budgets, salons catering to *natural/curly hair, and those offering dry cuts.

PS: I was curious to know if anyone has had any experience with Anthony Paul Salon in McKinney? I came across a review giving several kudos to "Sara" for working with (non)/curly hair. (Wet Cut, no blow dry or style $28 - $42.) I'd really like to try a new stylist who is more adept in caring for curly hair.

Thanks ladies & lurkers.

I've heard great things about Valdeh (http://www.valdeh.com/), but I haven't been to see him. I might see him when my hair gets a bit longer and needs a different shape. Kelly Foreman of MopTop hair products recommended him to me. There are quite a few recommendations for him in the salon locator section, too.

I did have a consultation appointment at The Styling Hutch in Plano. I didn't get a haircut, but wasn't terribly impressed with my styling consultation. My hair was covered in cones and fell totally flat within a couple of hours.

My hair is wavy and I've been working with a stylist who cuts it wet and does a simple gypsy cut for my layers. He's been helping me grow it out from pixie/shag layers and bad haircuts in the past. (Easy to get those in Dallas - the land of straight blonde hair! )

Sorry, swirlygirl, I hadn't noticed a response in my subscription notifications. (0.o)

I am somewhat hesitant of The Styling Hutch/Valdeh because of their pricing.

I may call the Anthony Paul Salon and ask a few general questions. If things seem hopeful, I will bite the bullet and/or post further information.

Thanks for the information! It will be nice to keep things in one spot. A salon in Arlington was mentioned, but is a bit further than i'd like to travel. If reviews compel me enough I may just do so.

If that location is good for you I can find her name.

Good luck! I agree it is frustrating there aren't more options here. Most people seem to prefer the straight look.

And if you try Arlington, let me know. I do remember reading good reviews for that salon!

Absolutely!

BTW, how do you find the Terrestrials products? Do you like them so far?

I went there for a haircut and ended up purchasing all the products. I hated them. When I took them back they put it on a gift card and so I have to go back. The haircut was good but it is sooooo high. $110 for a haircut. I don't know if I will go back after i use the gift card.

I would appreciate the name of the lady at the aveda salon. Thanks!

"Okay, her name is Stephanie and she is at Avalon Salon in West Village 214.969.1901 - 3699 McKinney #412. Take Central express south to exit 1B ( Haskell), turn rt off of service road onto City Place Blvd - you will come to Mckinney. She has curly hair herself and knows what she is doing - I plan to visit her soon! My friend [with awesome naturally curly hair from birth] has been going to her for over 3 years now."

I have been to the styling hutch... and I love Karen. She is great! She did the Ouidad cut on my hair ( I am a biracial African American) and it was wonderful. I didn't pay $110 dollars though....I think I paid $75...but the cut was great.. my hair is growing out now... but is still looks great.... and she introduced me to the Ouidad gel... and I bought some of the mixed chicks products ( which I had used before and liked fairly well).... I don't know who cut your hair.. surely it couldn't be Karen...I took my husband's cousin over there ( She is Nigerian) and Karen worked wonders on her hair as well...

In your experience with them, have you found the same level of service between one location to another? (if you've gone to any of the others)

I'm STILL trying to decide who I want to see. LOL! (my poor hair)

Go to Valdeh! He knows what he is doing! Valdeh has been doing my hair for almost 1 year now, and he is by far the best stylist I have met. I have struggled with my curly hair my whole life, but Valdeh knows just how to cut and style curly hair.

He is also a lot of fun. You won't be sorry, call him at
972-208-7000.

For the first time in my life, I can say "I love my hair".
I would love the name and number of the stylist in Frisco since I live in Frisco! I was going to go to the Styling Hutch, but couldn't justify the $110 after reading not so great reviews.
3b (I think) Currently using Devacurl products, re:Coil, TGI Curls Rock line.
I was underwhelmed with Styling Hutch; my haircut was good, though.

For those of you wondering about Valdeh, I have an appointment to see him for a trim this week. I've been curious about getting a true curly cut, and my hair is long and good condition such that I think I can get away with trimming once a year so the cost kind of evens out. I'll be sure to let y'all know how it goes, maybe with pics!

  1. Like minded for CG routine - his shampoos are sulfate free and his conditioners and stylers are mostly silicone free. He does shampoo before cutting. Next time I'm going to try asking for a conditioner-wash.
  2. Has trained for Deva cutting but seems to prefer the Ouidad carve-and-slice method plus his own methods. He cuts wet.
  3. Styles with Ouidad rake-and-shake method which probably works great on tighter curl patterns - with my looser curl pattern, it dried mostly wavy without much in the way of the ringlets which I normally get.
  4. Seemed very interested in my overnight plop method. He hadn't heard of plopping, so I'm going to send him a link to the Jessicurl video that describes it.
Product brands I saw in his salon:
  • Mop Top
  • Fuzzy Duck
  • Curlisto
  • Bumble & Bumble
  • Giovanni
My own experience - I have thick hair, a loose curl pattern, and fine individual strands. My previous hair cut was a U-shaped hemline with long layers. I felt that the layers caused my hemline to look really thin, and he agreed, encouraging me to grow them out. Current length is BSL with goals of growing it longer, to waist length. Even though my hair is thick, I don't have bulk or "bigness" problems, so after discussion, we decided to skip the Ouidad carve-and-slice and he just trimmed my hemline less than an inch, maybe 1/2". He also cleaned up my layers a little to encourage them to grow out healthy, with the ultimate goal to grow the layers out.

He did the Ouidad rake-and-shake for styling, using the Mop Top gel. He used a ton of gel, sectioning my hair into small sections and generously coating each hair with gel, pulling it straight. Then he gave it a little shake and went on to the next section. I'm pretty sure he didn't do any scrunching. I think both the amount of product and the method is what caused my curl to pretty much fall out - but I would expect that from the Mop Top gel since I know it doesn't have much hold. (This is why I prefer to use smaller amounts of the Fuzzy Duck gel.)

He has a hood dryer as well as a dryer + diffuser. He showed me how to do a zig-zag part, then clipped my roots with duckbill clips and sat me under the dryer. After my roots were dry, he finished the ends with the diffuser.

I purchased a bottle of the Mop Top daily conditioner, but he was out of the Fuzzy Duck gel so I'll probably go pick it up sometime this week.

Hope this helps somebody who's on the fence!

I have an appointment to check out Valdeh this weekend.

I am a little concerned since my hair has been thinning due to hormonal issues and a lot of gel or rake and shake will likely leave it with no wave. That said, I can always restyle. It is the cut that is important.

It will also be interesting to see what he says when I say I don't use conditioner or shampoo and use homemade gel.

My main objective is to get a better shape for my hair while it is thinner, but leaving it ready to grow again when this period of hair loss stops. I might even post for ideas. I don't want to go too short or too layered since that is the part that is so difficult to grow out!

I'll update after my appointment.

Overall I would say it was a good experience. He leaned to the conservative side, which was good for me. We talked about more layers versus no layers and agreed to head to no layers first since it is easier to add more layers later than to grow them out once they are cut.

He didn't do too well styling my hair, but I have only had one stylist who really did that well. He tried to show me how to do the Ouidad rake and shake with lots of moptop gel on my hair. I already knew my hair doesn't do well with that method, but I let him give it a shot.

I will go back. Overall, the cut is good and he was detail oriented enough that he stopped me as I was leaving to fix a spot poking out around my neckline. I think he'll be good to help me grow out my last few layers and then play with some different bob shapes as I let it grow from there.
