Carlos Flores of Mario Diab Salon NYC or Ana/Esmeralda of Devachan NYC
I am going to get Pintura Highlights and a “Deva” cut in August. However, I am torn between which NYC salon to go to. I have done my research and here are the two I am torn between:

Cut and color with Carlos Flores – he is featured on and there is a TON of good reviews of him on Also considering color with James of Mario Diab salon.

Cut with Ana
Color with Esmeralda

What would you do? Help! I’m driving myself nuts thinking about this!

hands down, i would go to carlos at mario diab. heard james at mario diab (also formerly of devachan as is carlos) is fabulous. i think carlos does pintura too.
once, a long time ago, i had a haircut with ana. did not like the way she styled it at all. i had the impression from my one meeting with her and from what others have told me, she has a basic cut and does not like to deviate from that. plus, i think she is not ay devachan right now, i heard it was uncertain if she is coming back. i believe she is traveling. (unless you have called and she is back????)
carlos is AMAZING!! everyone i have recommended him to have thanked me over and over and keep seeing him and have referred others -- wavies, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4s. the man knows hair! carlos listens to you and talks with you.
let us know what you decide and how it turns out.

Thanks so much for your thorough input. It helps a ton and eases my mind. Hearing that, I will make an appt. with Carlos. I will def. post pics.

Now to decide who should do the Pintura. I read that James is really very good at color and it is his specialty. James or Carlos for Pintura highlights? Anyone?

Oh, BTW when I inquired if Ana and Esmeralda were available for a cut and color at Devachan, they said yes. So she is back unless there is another Ana.

Brain Tumor
I had to cancel my appointment with Carlos because on June 15, 2009 I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor the size of a tangerine. I had to have emergency brain surgery in which they had to shave off 1/2 of my beautiful curls to do surgery. I cried about my hair but am happy to be alive. I am now at home recovering. It has been nerve wrecking to say the least.

ArcEnCiel -- i am sorry to hear about the surgery, but happy it was benign!! what a relief! now, to recover and let your hair grow. i hope your recovery is fast.

I realize some of these postings were from 2009, but I recently went to Carlos Flores at Mario Diab Salon in NYC for a highlight touch-up. My hair was already highlighted a medium blonde and just needed my roots touched up. The reason I switched to Carols is that I just began wearing my hair wavy/curly. While I didn't need a hair trim yet, I couldn't wait for Carlos to cut my hair later down the road based on the rave reviews. The color looked good in the salon, but when I got home, I noticed in my bathroom mirror how brassy the color was. I was hoping that when I looked in the daylight the following day it would look better. Unfortunately, it did not. He apparently didn't leave the highlights on long enough. The color was awful. In addition to that, he painted the color on in a manner that looked too "stripey" to my eye. I had to go to Devachan to have a corrective color job done with another colorist. And while it looks much better (with the toner added, etc.), there is still a tad left of the brassy color underneath and it will probably rear its head to some extent until it is all grown out. What a disapointment and waste of money. Another woman who posted on here some time ago goes to Carlos for cuts and while she loves how he cuts her hair, she cautioned not to go to him for color as it "was not his thing." Unfortunately, I didn't read that warning until after it was too late. I just don't understand how such a bad color job can be done by such experienced people at high end salons, but it even happened to me once when I had my highlights done years ago at Bergdorf's in NYC. Yet, another color correction had to be done at another salon. Switching colorists is always a scary thing to me.
