Need Stylist Recommendations for NJ/NY area
I am looking for stylist recommendations for the NJ/NY area. I have had my first curly cut at Labratory Salon in Morristown, NJ with Valarie. I liked the cut but I am not sure if I am crazy about it and I don't like that they only use Bumble and Bumble. I cannot spring for the $100+ haircuts of many places I would like to go to. Any recommendations in a similar pricing range was Labratory ($65)? I am contemplating Anthony Garubo or Zoo Crew.
Thanks!

Try Vartali in NYC. The owner Vartan is a genius in my opinion, as is Piet who trained under Vartan for many years. If they gave out PhD's in hair styling, these guys would definitely qualify. Neither are bogged down by any particular convention or technique. They create and innovate rather than follow trends. They will cut dry or wet, or both in the same session, and the result is a low-maintenance, individualized style looks good when you leave the salon, but most crucially, for weeks thereafter. They understand that hair changes with the seasons and with age and approach it accordingly. Through all this, they are always professional, courteous, and polite, unlike some hairdressers that try to make you feel like they're doing you a favor by letting you sit in their chair. The only downside to going to Vartali is that they raise the bar so high that you will probably never be completely satisfied with another stylist.

What does he charge?

I just got my hair cut about two weeks ago at the Devachan salon in NYC and I couldn't be happier! My hair is curlier, bouncy, and way more full of life. The cut itself was around $150, a little pricey but SO worth it! I had Mia as my stylist and i recommend her VERY highly. She was personable and more than willing to answer all of my questions. I'm from a small town in the mountains of NC so I was very intimidated to get my hair cut in a "fancy NY salon" but came out with a great experience and even greater hair!! Here's my before and after:

Barbara Lhotan - Curly Hair Specialist!!
I met Barbara on an airplane and we got to talking. She gave me her card, and said that curly hair was her specialty. Before I knew, I was googling her name and realize that she was a curly hair guru!!! She set up an appointment for me at Hollywood Salon in Miller Place. She colored and cut my hair and it was amazing. My curls fell like ribbon perfectly fitting into one another. I would definitely google her name and make an appointment. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!

Hi TaraVictoria,
Do you get a curly cut or a regular hair cut at the Zoo Crew? What exactly is a curly cut? Also, did you ever get color there? (sorry for all the questions).
I live near the Zoo Crew, and I was thinking of going there. I heard lots of good things about it.

Hi Hipchick. Sorry to respond so late. I've been away from the boards for a good while.
A cut with Vartan is probably well over $100, but less for Piet or Gretchen (who are also excellent and have a huge following of devoted clients). You could call ahead and find out specifics.
As for differences between a Deva cut and what Vartan and his students might do... Vartan has been in the trade and in the same location (57th and Park Ave, NYC) since the early 1970's. I tell you this because in this trade longevity means something. And Vartali's longevity is connected to its ability to serve a wide variety of clientelle, IMO. They really understand hair. For the stylists at Vartali, the client's hair and lifestyle are what dictate a cut, not trends. They have no interest in giving you a straight cut just because it's in style. Just as back in the 80's, clients were not walking out of the salon with big poofy hair just because it was "in".
It's hard for me to describe. But I have been happy with both. If I could find the time to drive to NYC (from PA) every few months for a cut, I certainly would do it because I consider it such a treat. But I'm just as pleased with Teresa, who is a Deva-trained stylist five minutes away from me.

Thanks Patricia for explaining the approach at Vartali's. Do they give cuts there that can be worn wavy, curly or straight? I am frustrated with my Deva cut as I seem to only be able to wear my hair curly. If I straighten the ends look terrible.

Salon in North Jersey
I tried Cristina's Full Service Salon and Spa in Pine Brook, NJ. I was very happy with the salon and the stylists. They are trained in Deva cuts and I would recommend trying them.

Hair 166 - moved with new name
The salon formally know as Hair 166 in Monsey has moved and also has a new name:
Debbie Hersh has moved down the road to 296 Rt 59 in Tallman, NY and the salon is now called Rapunzil Hair Studio.
Debbie is great and very reasonable.

There's a stylist transitioning from DevaChan who currently works out of her home and her name is Luciana D'Angelo and she just did my 1st BC/Deva cut which turned out INCREDIBLY! She only charged $75. Here is a pic you can compare to my avatar and if you'd like her info PM me.
