Best Natural Salons in South Florida Who Know What They're Doing
Hi ladies. My current state of hair is in one word, ugly! I have such a horrible shape. There's alot of hair on top and then around that area its shorter. Uneven spots in various areas, due to a bad haircut last yr in Sept. After that I went somewhere else to get it cut better, but I don't know if I want to go back there. He basically blow dried my hair bone straight and then proceeded to "shape" it, but I'm honestly looking for a real-deal trim more than a grazing off the ends with scissors. It did look better afterwards. But my shape is still off!
So if you please, can you recommend hair salons that specialize in cutting natural hair the CORRECT way and who actually know what they're doing.
Thank you.
nicole

Oh, man, sorry about the bad 'cut. It seems that good curly stylists in our area are scarce. I have the same stylist for 22 years, and she doesn't really do CG, but she works with me and I trust her, but she isn't taking on new clients (she has health issues and has to rest a lot).
I wish we got some more curlies chiming in with So FL recommendations.
I know that if my stylist's health took a turn for the worse and she retired (which she has almost done twice), I will take the drive to the west coast and have Struttswife do my color and cut. Hey, I guess I can make an outing of it with hubby, Miami to Tampa-St.Pete area to get me beautified. I'd be terrified to drive it alone (I'm a driving wuss), but think how fun if a group of gals from SoFL could get a day with Tiffany of Live Curly Live Free book fame? Huh? Huh?
BeccaPoo is in SoFL, and she might have a rec.
I heard one of the gals say the Ouidad salon in Ft. Laud has a good stylist (but I can't vouch for it).
I know there's a Deva certified stylist in the GBS in Aventura (just west of Biscayne and Miami Gdns Drv), Bertha something, but I never saw anyone comment on her (though I did start a thread to see if anyone had knowledge).
Of the recommended salons, I saw two down in the Kendall area were mentioned (or rather one salon and one stylist, er, Terri the name? on MIller Drive).
There was mention of a natural salon in SoFL, I think in Coconut Grove, and if I remember the name, I'll edit to add. Eludes me.
Good luck!

Thank you, MirCurls.
I would definitely travel any number of miles for a good stylist who knows how to handle curly hair, let alone my curly hair.
As for your suggestions, there is a salon called Las Olas Beauty that has certified trained stylists in the way Ouidad cutting techniques and such. I've been wanting to try them, and they have decent reviews, but I'm still a little skeptical.
Oh and I've been to Natural Trendsetters. I'm still harboring negative feelings about my last encounter there and I know I should grow up, but it cut a bit to the core. I went for a simple highlight/ dye job and twists. The young lady (who shall not be named) was too busy talking about how she met some rap star and offered to do his hair when she should've been paying attention to the dye job I was receiving. I wanted just a couple of strand highlighted or dyed red, but ended up with pink hair. She didn't bother to apologize or offer to correct anything. They just took my money. So I will never set foot in that place even if it is my last resort. I'd rather chop off my hair then to go there.
Besides that I'm still on the lookout. I'm just dying to get a good trim/haircut because this ugly shape is driving me crazy.

That's very good to know, ShortnCurly. Personally, I think you should give that name so others can avoid them, even if it's just a first name. People need to know what hairdressers to avoid. And rude, inattentive, snotty ones who don't have the decency to apologize definitely should be avoided (anyone can make a mistake, but some humility is called for at those times.) Frankly, they should NOT have taken a dime for a botched job, but rather, should have offered to have their best colorist do a repair (if possible). Charging for a botched dye job is tacky in the extreme.
If you do find someone great, make sure and let us know.

Thank you, Mir. It was unfortunately Simone who jacked up my do. But I'm sure her skills are far better now, since it was in summer 2004 the bad dye job happened. I don't wish for her current clients to stop seeing her, just make sure she is on point and paying attention to what she's doing to your hair, is all. I've been thinking and I'm going to go for the gusto with Las Olas Beauty, since they have certified Ouidad stylists but more importantly women stylists who know how to cut and style curly hair. I'll post pics of before and after.

Shortncurly, PM me for my stylist's info (named Melonnie). She's a certified stylist, and she usually works from her home salon in Fort Lauderdale. I've sent a few ladies to her from NC.com and so far I haven't had any complaints, and a few have become repeat customers. She really knows her stuff because she works in the film/modeling industry so she knows how to do hair of all textures from straight to kinky-curly. She also listens well, and her trims are really trims, not big chops in disguise.

Yep!
Another thing is that there are great people out here who are not licensed or own a salon... You gotta search or learn your hair and take the chances!

I have 3 c/4a hair. I went to Las Olas Beauty and Adrianna did a fair job with the Ouidad method but I was not satisfied with the shape. So I went back to my old hair stylist, Walter at Peter of London in Kendall and he cut my hair into a fabulous shape. I think i am going to stick with Walter for shape and go to Adrianna when I need to get some of the bulk out.

I don't think I'd go to someone unlicensed unless I saw them doing another person's hair first. That being said, I did the same "audition" with my girl and after I saw how well she did another curly girl, I decided to let her do mine too.
I trust no one besides myself with my hair, but Melonnie is the exception.

@ BekkaPoo: I've faltered many times with trusting stylists to do my hair and have ended on short side of the stick. I trust you and I'll trust Melonnie. Excited to get that trim or chop whichever is needed. Thank you for the referral.

I know the feeling hun, and trust me I have been to every kind of salon. It took me 33 years to find Melonnie. And you're welcome.. I love referring people to her because I can't say enough good things about her skills. I haven't seen her do braids or anything like that so I'm not sure if that's on her roster of skills (it wouldn't surprise me if it was), but as far as cutting, wet styling, rollersetting, etc. she's gold.
Hehe.. yeah you better believe it!

Oh, man. Heard from my stylist of two decades she's retiring.
OH LORD HELP ME! I'm hair orphaned. Now the quest is on to find someone who won't massacre my hair.
I'm so bummed it's not funny.

I went to Yulia at Las Olas Beauty in Ft Lauderdale. I was very happy with the cut and style. I loved the end result, but of course when I tried it at home, it never looked the same. I let my hair air dry so its not a big deal for me. I get my hair cut maybe once a year.

I never did make that appointment at Las Olas Beauty nor the other place. I'm still sort of curious to try it, but I read some reviews online, not here though. One girl said she left with her hair shaped like a box! That I don't want. In the meantime, I had a spa day for myself. My profile pic is what my hair looks like now. I did an ACV rinse with a small amount and 2 leave-in conditioners, plus oil on hair and scalp. Hair is still soft, but best part no product leaving my hair and going onto my fingertips!!!

I've bookmarked the info for Salon Vaso (a bit chichi for me, but the reviews have been great and the owner does have curly hair) and The Strand in Pinecrest (Teri, who has been reviewed here on NC).
I have 3b with some 3a, and my hair is flexible, style-wise. I used to be able to blow dry it mostly straight, or leave it half curly, or leave it natural, etc, and it's not horrible to work with (although i am frizz-prone a lot).My concern is mostly to have a good cut that will allow me to have some volume on top and sides. From learning techniques here on Cutltalk and NC, I can get my curls looking quite pretty many days, though I have not mastered volume or frizz-control. I'm flexible enough to modify the CG quite a lot if that's what it takes to get my hair curly-nice and wearable for more than a couple days post washing (I'm not interested in straightening, but I'm also not interested in washing my hair every dang day). But I do need to feel like I have a style and not just a hanging mop of curls (which is not an appealing look on a fat, 50 y/o woman).
The search is on...
