I've been using Elasta QP conditioning shampoo; it is sulfate free and it does not seem to dry out my hair. Does not remove heavy cones though. Just bought my 2nd bottle; very cheap too, like $3-$4.

When I color my roots, I roll my hair up in sponge rollers and get at the the roots that way. I "squirt and smoosh" the roots in each section. For me it's a lot easier to get the color on quickly...
