Diffusing or even plopping might help!! Also adding layers will help add shape and allow you to get some spring back. Not sure what type exactly but a stronger gel and scrunching hair upside down...

Just work on restoring moisture and continuing to slowly trim off damage. Do a deep conditioning treatment once a week, it really does wonders!

Is is possible the straight side is due to heat damage? Either way, you could try heatless curls styles on both sides and use gels or mousse as curling agents.

I would just to be on the safe side, but it's really up to you. Also, it sort of depends how often you use them. If it is very infrequently then you might be okay with no heat protectant.

make sure to use a leave in conditioner! If you plan to transition, treat your hair as if it's natural. There are tons of tutorials on braid outs/twist outs/heatless curls, so try out some of those....
