Just like other plant-based oils, Castor oil expires and that could lead to that "off" scent you discovered. Definitely check the oil's expiry date.

Oil is definitely the way to go!

Oil adds more slip to each hair strand to stop it from catching on itself. I still get them every now and then but the amount is negligible now that I use oil every day and braid my hair at night.
