Cruelty-free hair products?

I use a co-wash, a leave-in conditioner, and curl cream to style. Are there any of these products out there that are cruelty-free? I'm talking about drugstore/Walmart lines.

I don't have softened water where I live, so the water is hard. Which of these would be most affective, yet least damaging for the removal of products/minerals from hard water?

Yes, I'm trying to follow CG. I went to a salon retailer thing yesterday (my mom is a hairdresser) and the Redken Shades EQ needed peroxide, and my mom said that that was damaging. We didn't buy any....

Help! My hair always snarls up!

My hair has always been prone to knotting up, especially in the back. I'm afraid that by combing it out and tugging at the snarls, I may be damaging my hair in the process because I tug so hard....
