Any thickener (instead of gelatin) will do. Kudzu, pectin, agar agar, cornstarch, arrowroot. I think they all potentially will give a gel cast, much more so than FSG.

People have had luck with added hold by adding gelatin and also kudzu to their FSG. I apply my FSG separately from other thickeners, so don't have any specifics on combining.
