Default Calling all vo5 or suave users. I have a question.

I might never get the answer to my question but I’m just going to give it a try anyway. I’ve been alternating (using) v05 and suave conditioners ever since I went CG (no-shampoo method), which is right around the same time I got a big chop. And I’ve been adding household ingredients to my conditioners such as; olive oil, silk peptide powder( I found this through mowtowngirl.com and she said it makes hair very soft) , honey, glycerin, vit e oil each in respective amounts. Now, my question is If you use v05 or Suave conditioners do you use them as is or do you spruce them up with additives if so what do you add and do you have a method of adding them (e.g a big cooking pot, mixing and funneling everything back into bottles (that’s what I do), or putting the ingredients directly into the bottles?

Also, if you don’t addanything do you use any other additional conditioners as well or does v05/suave do the job alone?

I don't typically add anything at all to them. I tried honey once, but was concerned about the potential for it to lighten the color, so I cut it out again.

I usually use the V05 to cowash with, since it's a little lighter/thinner and seems to get my hair a little 'squeaky' clean compared to the Suave. I'll follow by conditioning either with one of the thicker Suaves (usually Ocean Breeze) or Biolage Conditioning balm if my hair's extremely dry.

I did discover upon going CG though, that it's REALLY easy to overcondition my hair. That's why I've been sticking with these, and really only doing a DT about once a month... otherwise my curls get kind of droopy and my hair's flat and lifeless.

I also do not add anything to the Suave or Vo5 conditioners that I use to co wash with. But again, I have very thin and fine hair, so it just works better for me. I'm interested in seeing these responses though, because I've thought about doing this.

Me three. Don't use anything in the co-wsh. just my co-rinse which is TIGIMM not suave or v05 cuz it's not moisturizing enough. Be careful with mixing stuff and making your own concoctions because they can grow MOLD and BACTERIA EEEEEEEK! Your best bet is small batches that you'll use in a few days or a week. The curl chemist wrote an article about this. If you're going to add anything add it to your rinse not your wash. In the Summer i was adding Honey to my Co-rinse but not now in the cooler weather. Might try Olive oil though if my hair is looking dry.

I don't add anything to my co-wash either. I use Suave Coconut and use it to clean my scalp. I then use a thicker, more moisturizing conditioner over all of my hair (AOHR or EMB). I added honey once, and like MimsTX, was concerned about the potential for it to lighten my hair so I stopped.

I use only Suave and VO5 to condition wash/detangle/condition.

If my hair is feeling a little dry or just depending on the weather, I might add something to my gel (Ojon, oils, curl creme or pudding, aloe gel, honey) in my hand not in the bottle.

My goodness, this brings to mind when I mixed at least 8 bottles of v05/suave (+ water) with some amla powder. I used some of it for a little more than two months but then I had to throw out the remaining bottles because they started having some weird substance around the bottle openings and the consistency became awkward/weird. It never crossed my mind that it could have been mold or some sort of bacteria. I always worried that v05/suave alone wouldn’t be moisturizing enough but now I’m going to give it a try since most of you all seem to have gotten great results and your hair look fab. I really want to stick to either of these conditioners though because; being a college student I have a very limited budget so I try to keep it as basic and cheap as possible.

Oh and, thank you for all your responses. If anyone has anymore input on this please feel free.

Also, Does anyone know of any other cheap (ranging from 99c-$3) conditioners -besides vo5/suave- out there that are CG friendly?

I use Suave Tropical Coconut alone. I don't add anything to it. I use it to co-wash and then after rinsing out I put a little more in as a leave in.

I actually like the Suave more than I do my Jessicurl Too Shea. I originally thought I would just use the Suave in between so I wasn't going through the Too Shea so fast, but the Suave has taken over. I love that's it so cheap.

If you want a cheap moisturizing conditioner, Trader Joes has a great conditioner that I love, Trader Joes Nourish Spa Conditioner. It's around $2.50-$3. A lot of people say it's a rip off of Giovanni, which is a pretty expensive (well in my book $10 is too much) natural conditioner. Nourish is all natural and really helped my hair, plus it smells really good. (geez, I'm sounding like a sales lady..)

I hope you live near one! Sauve was really bad for me (one of the conditioners had an ingredient that was a skin irratant!). I'm not saying that it's bad, just that it's great for a co wash, but not something you want for moisture. Though, if you have thin hair I'm sure it'll work better, but if you don't, try to look for something more moisturizning.

Good luck in your search for conditioners!

It all depends on your hair type. I have a lot of hair, but it is very thin and easy to overcondition, like Mims.

Suave coconut on its own works fine for me. Others need that extra moisture from a stronger conditioner. When I feel my hair a little dry, I'll use a little bit of my suave as leave in, or i'll doctor a DT and lightly microwave some coconut oil, ABUHO and honey and mix that in with my Suave followed by a plastic cap.

i just use the v05 for added moisture. my hair is too thick to use it as a detangler. its too thin for that in my hair. i use thicker/creamer conditioners for detangling

I like Suave Naturals Tangerine on its own for my co-wash (I like that its thicker than V05, too thin!). I rinse out AOHR, and leave in Giovanni Direct, then LOOB over that (LOOB is pretty moisturizing for a styler).

Well I am another V05 convert.
(Just had to say that I had a coupon at CVS and I got 3 bottles for $1.57. Score!)
Anyway, after reading about honey rinses using V05 as a leave in, and looking at my bottle of CurlJunkie Coffee-Cocoa, I realized that the 1st 3ish ingredients in V05 and CurlJunkie are the same.
So, I blended the following together for a leave in rinse--
V05 Vanilla Mint
Glycerin
AVG (pure)
Honey
Giovanni Leave In (sm amt)
DI water
I'll use it tomorrow & post results.

Hey all!!!
Thank you for posting, I really appreciate all your responses!!. I just thought i'd do a little update on this because I really took into consideration most of your responses about using suave naturals by itself without any added ingredients. And so far, I've been doing this for at least the past two weeks and I have nothing to complain about. Im using Suave coconut and the consistency is quite thick and im sure it is moisturizing as well because my hair doesn't look dry at the end of the day.

Jerri, thank you for suggesting Trader J. Nourish conditioner but I've tried it in the past and I must say I was quite disappointed because by the end of day three my scalp felt itchy and my hair looked extremely dry.I asked around the forums about it and some people said it might have something to do with the amount of protein in it. Not sure. I love Giovanni's line but, I agree as well.. it's just a little too expensive for my (college) pockets.

I use Suave Tropical Coconut without anything added. I use it for CO washing/rinse-out (these have always been the same process for me). I find that it works well, but I always follow every CO or WO wash with a leave-in for detangling and extra moisturizing.

I also use Suave Coconut and alternate with VO5 tea tree conditioner. i add a little Loreal (in the pink bottle with the curly label) every other day as a leave in. I know my curls have perked up. On alternate days, i just rinse and add the Loreal.
