Talking Long Island, NY curly salon tip!

I was going to go to Ouidad NYC and read mixed reviews. Then I learned about Devachan (sounded great) but was still not sure about traveling into NYC every couple of months for a cut.

I learned from this site to go to Colors of Cold Spring Harbor and ask for Jennifer. She was trained at Devachan in NYC. Problem solved!

She's a curl miracle worker. My hair has NEVER looked this good. And Courtney did a wonderful job on the color as well. It was 12 years since I walked into a salon since everyone used to chop my curls to bits. Jennifer shaped it based on how I wanted to wear it and it's perfect. I'm walking on cloud 9.

I am looking for an LI curly salon. I normally go to Devachan but they are soooo pricey. Can I ask how much she charges? Do they cut hair dry?

Yes, she cut it dry, which was fascinating.
The cut was $60 I believe. The color (2 process) was $130.

Smile Amazing Haircut at Colors by Jenifer

I was searching online for curly hair salons on Long Island when I came across this thread. I went to Colors and got my haircut by Jenifer (who is trained in the Devacurl cutting technique). I have never had such a good haircut! I am more than thrilled with my hair. Jen was pleasant and knowledgeable. I learned how to treat my curls and style my hair.

Thanks for the thread!

how do all of you like your haircuts from jenifer now that they are growing out? how long can you go between haircuts?
i've been getting my hair cut at devachan but live on long island and would so love not to have to make that trip for a haircut, but am hesitant to trust yet another long island stylist with my hair.
are you still happy with your haircut? are you going back to jenifer?

I'm responding to rbb's question about Colors of Cold Spring Harbor. Jen is great. I love my haircut. I was hesitant about going too. I got the same haircut at half the price. Cortney also did a great job on my color. The pampering at Devachan was great, but it was a whole day to go to the city, and find a sitter for my kids. Now I go while they're at school. You'll love Jen. Let me know how it goes.

I was as happy with my haircut here as I was in the city. It has been about 2 months since my cut. I'll probably go twice or three times a year. It is growing in great. I really think you will be happy with Jen. Go for it.

thanks! not quite ready for a haircut, so that gives me time to go to jen for a consultation and think about it. i've just had so many bad haircuts.... but it would be wonderful not to have to make that trip for a haircut.

Thumbs up Happy risk-taker!

After finding this thread I decided to risk it. I also go to Devachan in the city to get my haircuts. After reading everyone's comments about Jennifer @ Colors I decided to take my chances. I met w/ her on 10/11 and I am VERY happy w/ the results! She cut my hair dry and gave me exactly what I wanted. The only difference is that she used a defuser instead of a dryer. Other then that it was the same. I also asked her how often I should cut my hair and she said that every two or three months should be ok.
I absolutely loved my haircut and I will definitely go back to her. The haircut was only $65 and Jennifer couldn't be nicer.

Smile Colors of Cold Spring Harbor

It's been about two months since my haircut with Jen. It's growing in great. I might go into the city for one haircut a year because I like the day out. My husband and I go to the movies and dinner. But I will go to Jen all the other times. I might get maybe three haircuts a year. It's nice to know there is a great stylist close. I will always recommend her.

I am sorry but Jen is a great girl but not so good with CURLEY hair. I had 2 hair cuts from her and the first one was so-so. The second one was AWEFUL!!! She may be good with thin curley hair but not with normal to thick. I have been to Diva in NY and this is nothing like it. I think she may have taken a seminar and claims that she is trained. Curley 101 (for thick) never Scrunch...causes frizz...Jen scrunches. My hair is uneven. I went there with long hair and it is above my shoulders now. The first thing I said to her was "PLease keep the lenght long". At what point did she think "Maybe I should stop cutting if I really don't kow what I am doing?" Now, I have to blow my hair straight. Jen, my qustion to you is...WHAT ON EARTH WERE YOU THINKING???? I will never go back. I feel like some of the posts on here are not from real customers. Maybe it is the owners posting these WONDERFUL things.

i, also, did not have the great experience at colors of cold spring harbor that everyone is raving about.
i had my hair cut by jen, a very nice girl, and the cut is okay, but not good. i have a mix of 3a and 2c hair, and she cut it as tho it were all 3a; hence on the days my 2c hair is it's usual self, it looks a little like a mullet in the back, the 3a hair on my crown short, the 2c on the bottom half long.
i cringe when i look at it, but decided to wait and let it grow longer before i go back to carlos flores at mario diab salon in nyc (he worked at devachan for 11 years before he left, so he is definitely deva trained!). i could not get into the city which is why i tried a place on long island; i will go back to waiting til my schedule accommodates a trip in.
i believe jen is deva trained, but that is most likely not enough for all different types of hair, mixes of hair types on one head....
so maybe if your hair is all one type she is the right stylist.

Hi-

I went to Colors from the suggestions on this site and had Jennifer cut my hair in September. She and the salon were very nice. I felt very welcome and well cared for. She cut the curls dry, but insisted that she had to cut the length (my hair has been long-below my shoulders a few inches) so it would be even all around. Since it was my first time there and my first time having my hair cut by a "curly specialist",, I thought I'd take her advice===even though I wanted to keep the length!

The cut was beautiful--my curls were/are beautiful, but I've been in shock for the last few months over having the length cut so much! It is a good haircut in that it was easy to maintain,

So tomorrow I have another appt. with Jennifer, but not without speaking both to her and one of the owners on the phone this week about how important it was to me for Jennifer to listen to me and honor my wishes. (I also need to take a stand and stick with it.)

Tonight, I downloaded photos of haircuts I would like mine to be like (Long curly 3a with layers) from this site.

So wish me luck as I know you all do!! I'll let you know what happens...

P,S. (I'm also contemplating having some color done (for the first time in years) at some point (I think Colors may be too costly--although it seems that good salons here on Long Island have higher prices than ever). I'm 53 and my brown curly hair is getting peppered slowly with grey hairs. I just hate to have to get into that routine of having to update it every 6 weeks or so. (I might try it at home eventually, but I hear it's best to have a pro do it first..) I read on this site recently that a way to avoid that was to have hilites and lowlights put in --which disguises the gray more and doen't need to be done as often...but that sounds expensive, too. I want it to look natural and good. Any suggestions?

-Thanks - Wendy

Smile Jennifer did a great job on my hair today--really listened!

Hi- I went to Colors and brought pix I dounloaded from this site so she could see exactly what I wanted. I liked her frankness about what she could or couldn't do (layers from these pix) because of my hair type and that the back would be too thin if I cut layers in their!

She and I clearly communicated before her scissors did one cut and my hair looks beautiful!! I'm so glad I went back! Everyone is so kind and down to earth--and I love the little old cottage up on the hill the salon's in. It's just after xmas and the village looked so pretty and quaint out the windows of the salon.

My only concern is really the price. $65 is a bit steep for me--but I decided to give myself a Christmas/Chanukah present. I love the idea of going to a curly specialist. The last haircutter I went to had to be taught by me about how to handle curly hair. When I brought in a pix from a catalog of a girl with long curly hair, she insisted that it had been done with a curling iron. But I disagreed. I know the power of a great haircut that honors your curls.

I had a consult re color and I'm still not sure what I'm willing to commit to nor can afford. Anybody had any success with henna to cover any grey on brown hair?

Wink I like colors I LOVE J'adore in Glen Head

Colors is a great salon and Jennifer is a doll. If you want an even greater haircut go to Ruben at J'adore in Glen Head. The two guys that own the salon are absolute artists. Raphael is the color expert and he is an absolute artist. Ruben is the master haircutter and what a fabulous curly cut I got from him today. I made an appointment for just color as I was not sure I wanted to cut my hair. Raphael talked me into letting Ruben cut my hair, and boy am I glad. I think this is the best curly hair cut I have ever gotten. Try it, you'll love it.
