"your hair looks so pretty today!"
is it just me or does it bug you when people ONLY ever seem to complement your hair when it's straightened?
i have naturally 3a/3b hair and i like to staighten it from time to time (by time to time i mean every few months with my flat iron). Anyway, when ever i do straighten it ppl at school always come up to me and say "omg i luv ur hair today" or "did u u straighten ur hair cuz it looks really pretty" or my "favourite" one of all "u should do ur hair like that more often"
ugh i kno that they're just trying to be nice but it kind of annoys me how they ONLY say nice things about my hair when its straight and flat.

manderzz, i feel your pain! I don't straighten my hair, but when I want to hide it and don a wig for a bit, everyone comes out the woodwork with compliments. But, after thinking about it (and trying to preserve my sanity) I figure it's just because it's different and people want to let you know that they notice the change. Thinking about it that way has kept me from making some not so lady like comments about how "nice and straight it looks". lol

Oh yeah I had a rant about this on another thread.
But compliments these days are few and far between so I am gracious and just say thank you.
The way i look at it is I like it better curly, and when it comes to my hair that is all that matters.

Hm, me too. I straighten my hair less these days, but whenever I do even the people whose opinions I hold in the highest regard and who I know dont mean any offence by it say "You do look good with your hair like that, yknow."
I think they - men particularly - struggle to understand that though they are complimenting you.... theyre not complimenting who you actually ARE, theyre complimenting someone youve made an actual physical effort to become just for that day!
IM the one with the curly hair. Thats me! The one with the straight hair is just some personality I occasionally take out of my box of tricks for a change or simply because I know I cant be assed to style my hair every morning that week. lol.
I shouldnt be so fussy I guess. as y'all say, a compliment is a compliment, and they are nice to receive.... But in an ideal world Id much prefer my other half to say "Sweetie, I know you like to make an effort, but you have to realise you do look soooo much more attractive without spending an hour every morning washing and styling your hair, 3 hours drying it, 15 minutes on makeup, 30 minutes of daily exercise, and a fortune on dull yet necessary products...." ;o) hehe

I know what it's like! I straightened my hair once and it took about 3 or 4 hours. I went to school with it straightened and EVERYONE started complimenting it. It's nice of them but most of the compliments were, 'omg, you should wear your hair like that more often' which I didn't exactly appreciate, lol :] but the next day I came to school with natural hair and everyone started saying 'Straighten your hair again! you look so much better that way!' WTF? Did I look like I had three heads and a half when my hair was curly? Did I look that bad/unfashionable/crazy when I just let it swing? Yeah, I'm going to waste 4 hours every morning just so I can be your eye candy, let me just go plug my ghd in now huh?
But honestly, I just laugh at their comments. I'd like to see them in my shoes

Amen! Don't you hate that?
I'm on my 6th week of wearing it curly after straightening for years... I refuse right now, to go have it straightened for the day.. and have everyone come out of the woodworks with the oohs and ahhss... and why dont you wear it like that all the time?!
sigh... refuse to give folks the opportunity right now!

I know, huh?
It's not THEIR hair, so why do they care? I hate it when, like you said, they suddenly appear and start flooding you with compliments.
Lol, I refuse to straighten my hair, JUST to p*ss them off. Sometimes I ask them if they can do it for me!! Honestly they can just mind their own business.

Honestly, I think people just see that your straight hair is different from the usual and they want to complement the change, not as a dis to what you normally do.
Unless they actually say, "Wow that's way better than your curly hair." In which case, punch that person.

I agree w/onethousand curls, it's probably just because they don't see you often w/straight hair.

That's frustrating! But if a straight hair girl came to school after spending hours curling her hair with a curling iron, people would probably tell her the same thing.

yeahh!
last year I straightened my hair everyday, so then at the beginning of this year they all said "did u get a perm?!" and after that wore off, I straightened my hair ONCE, and everyone says "i love your hair straightened!" or, "you should do that everyday!" or, "i like ur straight hair better then curly"
people just need to leave us alone about our great curly hair

That's what they say! "Oh I LOVE your straight hair! You should straighten it more often it looks way better!" I would punch them, but I just like to stir them up psychologically

hah... what they don't get is, the more you straighten your hair the worse it's going to look when you do.
I used to straighten my hair about every other day, and it started to get to that icky, dry, falling-out-in-big-clumps feeling. That's when I "converted."
Now? I straighten like... twice a year. And after last time, which took 3 hours and wasn't even straight, I think I'm going to have to get somebody else to do it for me =P
(...of course, everybody is SO dying to see my hair straight that they'll be jumping up and down for the chance... sigh.)
I always get the backhanded compliments when I straighten. The "ohh, your hair looks SOO pretty... today." As if it were the definition of ugly the day before. *whatever*

My friends love my curly hair! Now, I'm still in school, so it's a lot easier to get complements on things. I used to straighten it twice a year. When I did that my friends would say,"Your hair looks nice, but I like it better curly". That's one of the greatest compliments anyone could give me.

That's so cool and nice! my best friend does compliment my curls when i change up the style from time to time but as for everyone else at school straight hair=pretty hair. The only other girl in my grade with curly hair relaxes it so i'm technically the only one. o well i luv my curls, and it's just their own opinion i guess.
