Has anyone ever had a dominican blowout?
I had one done today. It definitely can't be good to do on a regular basis. My hair still doesn't look as straight as I would like it to be. But it must be just my hair because everyone else's hair looked great.

yes, I grew up having my hair done like this. I actually think it is one of the healthier and least damaging ways to straighten hair. It never gets my hair poker straight either, and I think you and I have similar hair. I'm always surprised at the people who get really straight hair from it. The ONLY way my hair gets poker straight is to continually comb through it with a fine toothed comb while drying it from soaking wet with a hair dryer and then press it with a very hot comb, with very little product in it. With everything else, it will still curl up a bit - but I like the loose curls and volume of the rollerset/blowout method.

No but I actually want to get one done soon. I hate the look of straightening with an iron on my hair.

i did, and mine was bone straight. they set it and then blew it out and then touched it up with a flat iron/curling iron. my hair smelled like fried curling iron for days after that. if i were to ever do it again, i'd tell them to skip the flat iron.
i have friend who goes regularly and she doesn't let them blow it out at all. her hair is very healthy, but she does relax it.

Does it work better on looser curls?

I don't think it's necessary for looser curls - it's very time-consuming and there are easier ways to straighten most heads of loose curls, but a loose curly could certainly try it. I have seen it work well on very tight curls. I think what affects how it works is more the texture, thickness and type of curl of the hair. My hair doesn't take to it as well as some others because it is very heavy, thick and dense and also very porous, and it takes so long to dry in the set. Also, I've always had the type of hair that is very resistant to straightening. I remember seeing something on TV with Alicia Keys when she was new on the scene and they tried to straighten her hair with an iron and it just bounced right back up - that's my hair. Obviously since then, they found a better way to do it, as I did too, but for me, if my hair isn't pulled absolutely poker straight while dripping wet (not healthy on a regular basis) some curl will revert.

Anyone got any clips of one? I've never seen one done and it sounds interesting.

I'm a fine, EXTREMELY THICK AND DENSE 3b. My hair is pretty easy to straighten when the right techniques, tools and products are used. For all the curl and hugeness of my hair, it looks completely limp and lank when straightened.
Anyway, I've gotten them here (VA) a couple of times before the rudeness of some of the salon employees turned me off.
The issue we kept having was that this salon apparently doesn't see many clients with shorter hair. Mine was cut pretty short at the time (it's just now long enough to be in a bob). At the time it was too short to set in rollers before blowing out, but after the blowout AND a flatiron, my hair was literally so straight that when she tried to 'bump under' the ends with her curling iron, it wouldn't even hold. It was just completely straight and curl-less. She'd try and try to turn the ends under, but it'd remain poker-straight.
I think she expected my hair to be more stubborn than what it is. But then again, I get that assumption at most salons anyway--people see the thickness and the curl and are amazed at how fine and straight it is after styling.
I'd go again if I can find another salon here, and I'll definitely go the next time I visit NYC. I'll definitely go again once my hair grows back long.
P.S. One thing I did like was how my hair (reddish-brown) didn't come out so DARK after styling. I'm not sure what type products they use, but the ones in the AA salons definitely have more oil in them, so that my hair color looks black when I go to one. I've gotten so used to my hair being so dark after straightening, that I was amazed at its normal color after I came from the Dominican salon. Sorry this post is so long!

Is this a roller set followed by a blow dryer/round brush combo? I get those done. l like a little wave left to my hair and flat irons just don't work on my hair.

It's not so much that my hair isn't straight. But it is sort of poofy and not shiny and healthy, like other people's hair at the salon. You can tell by looking at my hair that it isn't naturally straight. Where with other people you couldn't tell. The lady said my hair was too damaged or dry or something like that.
I don't know if all blowouts are the same, but at this salon they washed my hair. The put on a deep conditioner and put me under the hair dryers. Then they roller set the hair and put me under a hair dryer for probably about an hour that was too hot at times. Then they took the rollers out and she used a round brush and a blowdryer with a focused nozzle to blow my hair out. She was pulling pretty hard and my scalp is still sore. Then she used a flat iron.

I've had it done when my hair was relaxed and when my hair is natural. HUGE difference. I got the shiny/healthy look with natural hair. Not so much when my hair was natural. And because my hair is 4a and 4b in some parts, my head was pretty sore from all the pulling that was needed to get the 4b parts relatively straight.
See pic:
I have no desire to do that again.
I think if I wanted to go straight I'd do it with a hot comb and/or flatiron and then use rollers or a round brush + blow dryer to get the volume and wave I wanted.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how sore my head was.....for DAYS afterward. ESPECIALLY right in the front, I have seborrheic dermatitis there and I *think* the skin might be thinner from being on steroid creams years ago. It just felt scorched and burned. And the skin there on my entire forehead was FIRE RED.....that lasted for a day or two but the soreness lasted longer.
Really, my hair simply does not require that much heat and manipulation (of a standard Dominican blowout) to get it straight. They could skip quite a few steps, but I didn't feel comfortable trying to figure out which ones and tell them. Like I said, the employees at the salon I was visiting weren't very friendly.

To Speckla:
I looked on Youtube but I couldn't find any really good clips that depicted the entire process. The quote above sums it up pretty accurately, at least at the salons I've gone to.

It all depends on the stylist
I get my 3b hair straighten in the winter time (so much easier to wear a hat with straight hair). I've been to so many different dominican salons as well as have my mom (we're dominican) do a roller-set on me. It really does depend on the stylist. I finally found one that could get my hair pin straight, without a flat iron , that could last me for weeks without frizz. Most salons are not used to dealing with such curly hair because most dominicans, including my mom, always straighten their hair, some even use relaxers. I'm not sure if everyone has easy access to different salons, but it is always good to shop around. I live in NY so I'm surrounded by them but had to go 1/2 north to the suburbs before I found the right one.

I do them every so often for a change of pace and for length checks. The place I go isn't known for it's customer service... it's first come, first serve and it's like an assembly line. But they are good and inexpensive.
Here's curly:
Here's result of the blow-out:

wavezncurlz, that looks beautiful!
You know what I like, the look after just a rollerset. I love the loose curls/waves that can give and it looks healthier to me than when they have to pull to make it more straight.
