Default control of the spirals?

im getting ready for the interview process for internships and since im not a artist or musician, the jobs are not exactly afro friendly. i don't want to break down completly and just wear twist 24/7. i don't mind the frizz on the daily, cuz it helps add to my fro, but for job purposes i can't always do that.

so is there any way of getting more control over the sprials for a more neat/subtle look?

huhhh...
can't believe ima say this, but to look more or less like this, lol

here is what im work'n with if you haven't seen already...

Idk if you can do anything. People always confuse afro-texture with frizz. If your hair is frizzy it'll go away with gel or something similar. Afro textured hair will always be afro-y. Not much you can do. But there's nothing wrong with that. Idk maybe a ponytail would be nice for an interview.

When my son had his hair as long as yours, he would gel it back and slick it down when he interviewed.

there you go making me look at corbin again....

but anyway, maybe you could try shingling in some gel? that would give your curls more weight and it would be less fro-ish and more controlled curls.

9osZBehbi: i understand exactly what you mean. becuse i do have afro textured (which i guess is my 4a/b) hair on the sides by my temples. but the rest is just frizzed out spirals im sure. i shake out and pic out my hair a bit to get a more rounded fro. you can see a few of them that managed to stayed together hanging in the second picture.

mariag002 & subbrock: what kind of gel do you suggest.

Any hair type can be afro-textured.
See although the curls are defined but yet their hair looks like an afro and is fluffy and not frizzy.

9osZBehbi: oooohhhhhh, ok.
i guess i didn't understand, lol. i though you were refering to the curl pattern. thanks a lot though, because that is what my hair looks like, expecially like that second pic and kelis's pic and even beyonce , but way shorter.

you seem to know a lot about this hair type, is this what your hair looks like. if so how do you, for lack of a better word "tame" it? because my hair is not long enough to pull back.

those pictures really helped btw!!!

I have 3c/4a hair.

Are you trying to have loose hair? Or just any style? I just bun my hair. (Too much negivate attention to deal with lol but wash and go was the thing this summer) I know the rake an smooth method works well for free hair. Or a denman brush. Culisto and Shinkling are great.

You can probally get the smooth look you have when wet with a hooded dryer.
Skip the blowdryer. http://missjessies.com/shingling101.htm

She has the Corbin look you where referring to. IDK if her hair is 100% dry.

Just gotta say I love your's (and Corbin's) hair- gorgeous!

Have you ever tried straw setting just the canopy? Perhaps the better question would be would you be willing to try a straw set? It seems like maybe that'd get your pattern looking more similar to the pic of Corbin.

Your hair is so nice now, I don't know if it'd even be worth your while going that far.

9osZBehbi: nope, not trying to get losser hair, juss a more apropriate job interview style then a bush. something more subtle like i said before. not exactly like corbin, but i've seen his hair bigger and bushy than that picture. so i was wondering how he got it to look like that and possibly do somthing similar, knowing that my hair is not exactly like his.

KindaWavy: thanks
but whats a straw set. sounds complicated

maybe i'll try a modified version of the curlisto thing over the weekend, cuz it too seems complicated.

that or i'll see how my hair looks with some gel. or just go on ahead and twist.

i had to edit this because i just realised that his hair is longer than mine, so that may play a bit of a factor. i dunno why, but that point kinda just went over my head, lol. mine is shoulder length in the back and just below my lip in the font when stretched. so you guys being curly u can have some idea where it shrinks to when curly

hmm, the only tip i can give you is do not tie your hair into a ponytail.

specially for a guy, a ponytail doesn't seem too professional.

it's a too 'lay back' style. lol

to give you an idea...

I'm really not an expert on this, I'm just a 3a afterall, but I've heard many people with your hair type use the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard to help with spiral control and "hang." Have you tried that product yet?

- wash your hair
- rinse
- leave-in conditioner
- and add some gel or oil

yep.
it will make your hair a little bit more weighted down

from the pics your hair actually looks looser than his. your curls are bigger.

SydneyCurl: i became hip to all the kinky curly products a while ago before it became really popular. the KCCC i didn't really like then, because i wanted my hair bushy and fro'd out, but that was back when i was young and care free and not trying to get a serious job, lol (well im only 20, so maybe not that long ago, lol) so maybe i could give it another try.

but the result i have seen from it were stringy ringlets that looked to feminine too me. i kinda wanted to maintain the fluffy spirals. but maybe im tryin to have my cake and eat it too.

BabydollRinglets: others have suggested that. ima try it and see what happens.

subbrock: oh really? so like a possible bigger 3c or 3b

with this gel idea. am i suposed to scrunch it in or rake it through?

by the way, thank you everyone for your advice. i really do appreciate it i know im probably acting real slow with all these questions.

here is a picture of my hair wet btw. dunno if it matters any.

I think it actually depends on how you use it. I've seen girls (I know, sorry, but there aren't many guys here on the board!) use less of it and get bigger, fuller curls. Scrunching, instead of raking, into VERY wet hair seems to result in more control(spiral) at the ends, but body(fluff) towards the root. I imagine it might be worth a try that way for you?

i definitely think youre on the bigger/looser side of 3c. ive never scrunched gel into my hair before, so id recommend raking it in. based off of my hair experiences, whenever i scrunch anything in my wet hair, it results in frizz. but i think sydeycurl had a great suggestion about concentrating it more on the length of your hair and letting the roots be more fluffy. also if you could try to keep your hair from flopping in the front while it dries, the overall look might be more professional.
when i see the pics that babydollringlets posted, i think that justin guarini's hair looks more "polished" compared to the dude above him because its not in his face.

ok...
the fantasia gel i can try sooner because there is a 24 hour rite aid across the street from my dorm.

the kccc will have to wait until i go home this weekend, because i know exactly where i can get it there and not go through the online process.

i'll post result here when i try this stuff out.

if all else fails, there is always the twist.

THANKS AGAIN Everyone!!!
