I'm pretty positive that the yellow shea butter (which I now buy) is not refined and is in its raw form; while the white shea butter is refined and not raw. I used to buy the white shea butter until I came to the US and had access to both the yellow and white form. Surprisingly, the yellow shea butter does indeed work better for me.

It could be what MissCurlyCue said, or it may not be shea butter. The white is generally refined, filtered and cosmetic in grade, whereas the "yellow" is unrefined and raw. Sometimes you can find it unrefined, but filtered to remove impurities.
It could also be Pentadesma butyracea(Kpangnan "Golden Shea" Butter), which is different from Butyrospermum parkii (Natural Shea Butter). Kpangnan is also yellow in color, but the difference is where it's grown and it's texture(I believe it's firmer). Both are moisturizing, though.

Shea butter is made in different African countries, in different villages or by different village cooperatives. It varies in quality, consistency, color and smell because of its non-standardized production. If it's very white it could be refined, but I have light, somewhat soft (crumbly/creamy) shea butter that is not yellow and it's raw

the kind i have is yellow. the vendor i buy it from had a big mound of it on a table, and she scoops it out into a plastic container. its soft, not crumbly and melts pretty easily when rubbed between my palms

According to a vendor who sells black skin and hair care products;
The yellow shea butter has more of a matte (less oily) finish versus the white.
White shea butter is better for eczema suffers.

I have both the white and yellow varieties. I wasn't sure which to get so I bought both. I have read that the white is typically more refined,.... but interesting that Jip mentioned that the white is better for eczema. I suffer form eczema I am definitely gonna test that theory. Off to apply some white henna!

theres a difference between refined, "white" , and yellow sheabutter. shea butter that is "stark " white in color is refined. when u come across a more putty colored, off "white" grayish hue it just come from another geographic location than the yellow like the sister above mentioned. ive tried both, but i lean towards the lighter shade simply because it absorbed better. the yellow left my skin a lil oilier and took more elbow grease to rub it in-so i use the lighter in my shealoe. im gonna revisit the yellow since its so cheap to order it on line from madina (3.99 p/ 16oz)

I usually by my shea butter from http://www.agbangakarite.com/ in bulk. They were out of stock for a while so I ordered from http://oilsbynature.com/vegetable-butters.html . I won't be doing this again. It is so grainy/gritty. When you melt it down, the consistency is weird. Both of these shea butters are light tan/beige.
I recently tried some ultra refined white shea butter and some yellow shea butter from the beauty supply store. The yellow shea butter made my hair super soft. Even my bedhead was super soft when I woke up the next morning. The AK, OBN or white shea don't get my hair as soft as the yellow shea.
I need to get some yellow shea butter in bulk

I didn't even know there were different types of shea butters until last night **blush**. I ran out the the shea my dad usually get for me from Brooklyn....living in Long Island I wasn't about to drive all the way to BK for $5 of shea so I went to a natural store near me. I actually didn't end up getting it cuz he wanted like $10 for it, it was like maybe 3-4oz? And it was white and had a weird consistancy, so I'll just wait until the weekend. hehe

Yea, some sources say the difference in color is due to palm oil and others say it's due to the nuts used. Either way I've used both in the past even though I prefer off-white because it's easier to spread I guess. But they both smell the same to me. They have that smoked smell. If your shea butter doesn't have a smell it's refined and refined shea butter has no skin benefits. You can get a free sample pack from http://www.hosiaonline.com/ they sell both kinds of pure shea butter and let you sample both before you buy.

Thanks for that tip, I am off now to smell my shea butter. Yesterday funny enough I came across for the first time yellow shea butter and it was easier to apply than the white shea so I was about to buy and give it a try but it was 10 dollars for a pound so didn't do so but next time I will.

I have the off-white type that I purchase from an organic/all natural store. The shea melts well between my hands, is smooth without a gritty or grainy texture, and I pay only $8.00 per pound for fair-trade & organic.
The refined white shea sold at the same store is ubber white, like cold cream & has a similar, fluffy consistency to cold cream.

i found a way to get around my grainy/gritty shea butter from oils by nature. i melt what i need (1lb increments) then immediately put in the fridge to re-harden. this knocked all the grains/grits out the field. i've been just applying it to my hair like this. it melts instantly when i rub my palms together.
i learned that the really yellow (dark yellow) has an medicinal root added (gives it this color) and imparts medicinal benefits.

I have nilotica shea. it's soft and light pale yellow. unrefined. organic
hippychic--that is the way to solve grainy shea. it's grainy because it wasn't melted and solidified properly. I didn't like the shea i got from oils by nature a while back

do u notice a huge difference between the nilotica (east african) shea vs west african shea. is it worth the additional price?
i'll stick to AK after i run out of this shea if i don't find bulk yellow shea.
