I think there is quite a bit of information on steaming hair at longhaircareforum.com. Have you been there before? I have not seen this topic discussed on this site so far.

I recall a thread about this maybe w/in the last year. Let me know how it goes. I like the concept. But maybe a pot of hot water will do?

I was looking at getting one over using a heating cap, but put it on the back burner for a while. My hair has been doing fine without the aid of heat for my DT's. I remember reading somewhere that using steam heat is supposed to be a better alternative to using hot air from a dryer when doing deep treatments. All of my DT's were with a steamer when I was relaxed. I don't see much about natural women using them, however, just the heat caps or a regular dryer.
I'd be interested in learning more from those who are using steamers as well.

I got one. It is one of my best investments. I steam my hair at least biweekly sometimes weekly depending on what I am doing. I wash with my shampoo bar (Honey butter) Detangle with homemade conditioner and shower comb. Then load up on DT (most of the time AOHSR). Pin my hair up with clips and sit under the steamer for 20-30 mins. Rinse with cold water= Super soft hair. Style

I bought a steamer back in Feb, 09 and I can say that it is one of the best investments that I have made for my hair. I got the idea from Diane Da Costa's book "Textured Tresses". It was one of the first books that I read on natural/textured hair. The steamer costed $130 +tax and I ordered if on line. I steam my hair about twice a month with a deep conditioner. I usually steam for 30 minutes to a hour. It is so relaxing and my hair comes out soft and well conditioned. The book also had a conditioner called the "asian steam bath" which included essential oils. I've made this conditioner and I have used others as well.

I bought one a few months back
and i do love having it. The moist heat is better than the dry heat for deep conditioning IMO and the price fore the hydrator is not that expensive, especially if you compare what you would pay at the salon.

I just got my steamer in the mail. I love them.It is such a good investment because everytime you go to a salon and get a steam treatment..its an extra $20 and sometimes more. I purchased mine from salonsrus.com also. I havent used it yet but I am definitely excited about it. I love the way my hair feels after I get it done in a salon. Have fun with yours!

Do you need a lot of room to use it? Does the moisture from the steam cause issues for carpeting? I know that probably sounds like a silly question, but I'm having trouble imagining the steam not creating moisture and dripping all over the floor. Does it do that?

i always have intentions of steaming at the steam room in the gym but i often don't get around to it. awhile ago i bought a nice hooded dryer and it's still in the box. i think i'll hold off on the steamer until i at least set up my dryer and in the meantime i'll go at the gym. steam is excellent for the hair! the heat opens the hair and the moisture allows the conditioners to penetrate without drying. it's also good for your skin!

OnyxCabelo,
No the steam rises and come nowhere near the floor. You may get some dripping on your face a bit, but a small wash clothe can handle that.

Someone on LHCF did a DIY steamer with turbies
http://www.longhaircareforum.com/for...ghlight=turbie
This maybe good for those who want to see the affects without dropping money for a real one first

I was a bit skeptical too... until I used my clothing steamer (on my head) and was thoroughly convinced!
IMO, using a steamer compared to a heat cap/hood dryer is like compairing apples to oranges.
Your hair will literally drink up your deep conditioner. It's definitely for those who have extremely dry hair (twa-ers, transitioners, etc.), it takes your hair to another stratosphere!!!
Your hair will feel like whipped butta!!!
FYI, Salonsrus, is having a $10 off sale (originally $139, now $129, plus free shipping) using the coupon code "exoticmommies" Coupon expires Feb. 2010!.
Also, shipping is very fast, you can receive it in approx. 7 days.
