Affordable Stylist in NYC? Is this impossible to find?
I'm a college student in NYC living on a limited budget, but somehow I haven't gotten a haircut since January and I am waaaaay past the point of needing one. So, anyone have any suggestions of stylists/salons in the NYC area? I live the in Bronx, but I'll schlep to Manhattan, Brooklyn, wherever. I've never had a Deva cut, and I know I should try one sometime, but don't know if I wanna shell out the dough for one.
(for a reference, I never pay more than $50 for a cut back home, and that usually includes a deep conditioning, shampooing, and cut. I know it'll be more in NY, but I wanna keep it as low as possible and I don't think I can last until Christmas break without a haircut.)
thanks!

Hi, see this link from the other day. http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlta...ad.php?t=87160
People have great things to say about Jeffrey (the salon is in Brooklyn) and I have my first appt today. There's a 15% off coupon on the website, his rate is $75 I believe, so the cut itself won't be that much more than you're used too. Certainly much cheaper than other NYC salons!

I know Ouidad uses 10 models for each student over two days, I am sure you can be a model. The classes are taken by very well trained stylists with no less than 5 years experience with Curly hair. Her salon is on w57th bet. 5&6. Try Devachaun, they give classes too.
Hope it helps, when I was in Hight School living in NJ, I would go to Sassoon for free cuts on Student day.

Sometimes it's difficult to get chosen for this - I've tried 3 or 4 times via the Ouidad site and I've never received a call about it from them, even though the response to my form submission said that I would.

Is it out of your way? I might stop by this week, I think an in person is always better. I figured they would have a high demand, maybe you will get picked this time, we can only hope
Cynthia
wouldn't that be funny if you were my model in class?

I have been going to Javier at the Jeffrey Stein Salon at 779 Broadway in Manhattan for years. He is so talented and well-trained. I get a cut and single-process color for $130.00. A bargain for NY!!!
I am not sure what the rate is for just the cut, but it is most likely between $60 and $70 dollars. Ever since I have been going to him, I get a thousand compliments on my hair!
Good luck to you!

It's out of my way enough that I made an appointment elsewhere, and of course the day after I got my cut, they called!
How did you like it there?

You could always request a junior stylist @ devachan for $75. I've watched Christopher and Ellen, and they're really good. They book 2 hrs for haircuts though, so be sure you're not pressed for time.

Try Parlor in the East Village. I see Boswell there (their curly specialist) and he is AMAZING. I believe their rates there are in the $60-$125 range, and Boswell is about $80. It's pricey, but it's much lower than what you'll pay at many other "fancy/high end" Manhattan salons. I feel like even the random salons you see all over the place are in the $40+ range in NYC.
