For those seeking looser curl
Well, I can't believe this didnt occur to me before today but....
lots of you know that I covet type 2 waves. My hair kinda started there when I first transitioned but has gotten tighter and tighter as time has passed (3a/b in spots)
I realized this morning, that perhaps it is time for me to abandon "gel". I was a bit nervous, but I was banking that if a product is meant to reduce frizz and define curl, perhaps that will be enough.
The Jury is still out: My first try was Just a dab of Komaza Coconut Milk as a leave in and then Super soaked with the Lotion. So far so good.... Seems strange to not have a gel in my hair and still have it so curly and defined....
A big test will be seeing if I get 2nd day hair without gel....
To be continued....

I'm very curious rudee gel helps to keep my Poof down as well as hold my waves.
You didn't turn into a poof head?

I did my hair at 10:00 - Normally if I was going to poof I would have poofed by now and I havent. But again, I need to sleep on it to know for sure.
But del, remember, you are trying to create and retain curls - I am kinda going for the opposite

For the past week I have also eliminated using gel. Instead I've been styling with conditioner only (VO5 actually) and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the results. I'm liking the more free and natural look to my hair.
I never thought I could go without gel because of the hold and definition factors but that hasn't been the case, so far, and I'm quite shocked. We'll see how long it lasts though...with winter coming I may end up a poofball yet.

I went with only Gel'less C today over some CJ LI and had great, frizz free waves. I had nowhere to go and your post inspired me. My hair looked better than it had in months and I was stuck in the house. Go figure.

Word
Ain't that the truth!
Anywho we don't use gel anymore on my daughter's hair. Just lots and lots of leave in and some QB BRBC (sometimes add some QB OHHB) and that's it. No poof and very very little frizz (she is 12 after all and pretty active! )

If I use just leave-in and/or curl cream without any gel, I get a nice loose, wavy curl. Also, some gels like Batia & Aleeza with poly-11 near the top of the ingredient list give me more waves than curls.

Ruddee, how do you dry your hair when seeking a looser curl? You don't diffuse, correct?

I always diffuse. Air drying gives me too much volume in part because it really locks in and tightens up my natural texture. In general I get looser, softer, less voluminous hair with diffusing.

Not bad... a few areas where I went a bit to heavy look kinda greasy. But the curls stayed defined and it didnt poof!

I'm really good at being non-helpful.
I may try using just my Komaza Coconut Pudding tomorrow without gel and see what happens... And I didn't post on the monster thread, but I've been doing a slightly modified version of the Super Soaker for the last few weeks and it works fabulously! Rudee, you're my method heroine.

So... Rudee, does eliminating gel make your curls looser? Using a curl pudding alone actually made my curls tighter!

When I made an appointment for an updo for my brother's wedding, the hairstylist told me to come with second-day hair with no product in it. I had used gel every time my hair got wet since I went CG so I thought my hair was going to look AWFUL, but with the proper moisture I'd been getting from CG, it really wasn't a poofball. Not as much definition as I'd like, but still not bad! Who knew a type 2 could get away with no product? It wasn't great enough for me to give up gel though.

It definitely helped.... I dont know if looser is the right adjective.... It was very elongated; the swirls were the same size, but long and down instead of round and out, so much so that everyone commented that my hair looked longer (it so did). All of which is fine with me!
I have alot more 'playing' to do, but it looks promising. I used gel again today to compare - the difference is discernible.
Re puddings: they always make my hair "rounder". Curl cremes do help me with the width sometimes.
