Default Receding Hairline and Curly hair

Hello everyone!
I've been struggling with the best thing to do with my hair for the longest time, and I thought a little feedback from people with similar experiences might help.
My hair is naturally curly. The curls aren't tight, and I kind of like the frazzled, messy look when they're just right (which depends on the weather, my shampoo, etc). In addition, my hairline is receding, and, yes I am a bit sensitive about it. I've been growing my hair longer to try to mask it. But I do know that, on the wrong day, the combination of receding hairline and curly hair doesn't work out so hot. Attached is a picture of my hair from a few days ago.
Today I got my hair cut at a low-end stylist, and they put product in my hair to give it more body. It was gooey, shiny and the lines from his comb showed, all of which a really don't like. I do understand that good product can help someone with curly hair manage it better. Does anyone know a good product that I can use that isn't so evident? Also, style-wise, what might be best to go with for my hair/hairline? I'm having trouble finding sound advice, and every barber I go to has a different opinion. I'm really lost when it comes to my hair!
