Can I subsitute Olive Oil for Castor Oil?
Is that a good replacement? I'm going to make a certain beauty recipe. I've never really felt the consistency of castor oil, so I don't know how it is compared to olive oil. Would that be okay?

I think they have a pretty different consistency and function differently, so I don't know if you can do that.

The viscosity should be similar enough but I think the bigger question will be the acid %'s that you may need for your product. Don't know exactly what they all do or what is needed but chemistry will tell you it can make a crazy experiment.

My only experience with castor oil is with the oil cleansing method. In that case, olive oil and castor oil function very differently and can't be used interchangeably. From an aesthetic standard, castor oil has a much heavier/thicker consistency. It is also unique in its medicinal properties.

I use castor in my soap and it is nothing like olive. Its much thicker. What are you making?? Maybe then we can tell you if its a viable substitute...

Thank you for your replies, everyone
SassySuzanne, I'm making mineral mascara, and the recipe calls for mineral eyeshadow (I'm choosing black, naturally) and castor oil.
Hope that helps you help me Any subsitutes?

Why don't you want to use castor oil? Are you allergic?

No, I'm not allergic...I just would prefer to use what I already have I don't want to buy castor oil...I've never seen it, anyhow.

I know castor oil is meant to be more 'drying' than olive oil...but I'm not sure how that will affect what you're trying to make. BTW if you do decide to use castor oil, it is very cheap and you can find it at most pharmacies.

Castor oil is sticky and thick, I have a feeling the consistency might be important to make the mascara stay on the eyelashes like it needs to. Olive oil is slicker in consistency. Castor oil is cheap and available at just about any drug store. In this case, I don't think you will get the results you want if you substitute.

Why don't you just try the olive oil and see if it works. What are we talking here...maybe a half teaspoon of olive oil and a couple milligrams of mineral pigment to make some mascara? It's not like you'd be wasting much in the process.

I just asked my senators to stand strong against a similar attack in the Senate. Will you do the same?
