Default Murder Mystery Dinner

I am hosting a murder mystery dinner over the Thanksgiving holiday. I ordered the game and began researching tips for hosting. My question is... I am hosting and playing a character. How will that work? I don't want to ruin it for myself by knowing who the murderer is. Some of the things I've read online say that the host knows and some say they don't have to. I plan on doing easy things for dinner so I can participate in the game. The game I got is one of the "How To Host A Murder" ones. So, can I host and play a part without knowing the outcome?

Default Hmmmm...

I'm not sure how you plan to have this played out...for instance if you want to assign roles before the party so ppl can dress up for it or whatever...but one way is if you have everyone pick their roles from a hat (you will need to pick yours prior so that you are not the murderer b/c i think it wouldn't work the same if the host was the murderer as well...idk)...that way you won't know who the murderer is either...

I'm planning on having everyone dress according to the theme (1920s) and then drawing character names when everyone is here. Costumes might not be perfect, but I think that will be the best way. I think I'm going to have to dress up as a male, which is fine with me.

I'm wondering if it's a problem for the host to play a character.

I went to a 1920's themed murder mystery night for Halloween. The host played a character, she also knew the outcome, I'm not sure how it would work otherwise. It was great fun though. If you decide to assign characters make sure you pair people up with people they don't know, it encourages people to mingle. Have fun!

A little O/T but where did you get your game from? I wanted to do one for my youth group, and one of my friends ordered it from nightofmystery.com, which worked, but I really wanted to do a 20s/30s themed one.

I ordered it from amazon.com. I just searched "how to host a murder game" and they all came up. I think a lot of those are 18 and up, so possibly not appropriate for a youth group? I dunno. They have ones for teens in that series too though. There are also ones that you pay for and download, but I didn't want to waste all the paper and ink printing it. Plus then I would for sure see the end result.

When I googled "how to host a murder" that series of murder mystery games said that the host does not know until the end.

Anyone else want to share their experiences?

That's really good advice. There will only be two people there, out of 8, who really won't know everyone else and they are pretty out going people. I was thinking about everyone drawing their character name when they get here. Did you know about your character before you went?

Yep, we were sent an email link with heaps of background info on our character and instructions on how the game worked and how to 'get away with murder' etc.

My mom hosted one years and years ago and just dug the game out and called me while she went through it. It tells the host what not to look at ahead of time to not give anything away. It also comes with a guest list and character descriptions, without giving away who the murderer is. I'll probably assign people to a character so that way costumes can be more accurate. I'm so excited and the game isn't even here yet! And we still have about 3 weeks! I'm going to drive DH nuts!

Ooh, can I come? Heh, I've always thought those were so cool, and I love costumes from previous eras.

My friends just did one this weekend for halloween. Apparently it came as a set and everyone got given a character card- so whoever was host knew as much as the others (except they also prepared a meal).

The game came today! I won't know who the murderer is until everyone else does (unless I figure it out). DH and I assigned people to characters and the invites will go out this weekend! Now I have to wait 3 weeks! I have many good qualities, but patience is not one of them
