Lightbulb In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

What do you think of this book? I just read it and I was just horrified and chilled to the bone. I think its amazing that Capote was able to gather so much information about the murders and the killers themselves.

Funny, I was just reading a biography of Harper Lee (who wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird"). I knew that she and Capote were childhood friends, but I didn't realize that she partnered with him in gathering all the information for "In Cold Blood." Apparently the folks in the town where the crime occurred didn't warm up to Capote, and if Lee hadn't been able to win them over to talk with her, the book wouldn't have happened. She also wrote a lot of the material that ended up in the book. Capote did not acknowledge her contribution, which certainly seems unfair.

It is a fascinating book, either way. Was it the first "true crime" book?

I read that Harper Lee bio - I too was fascinated by Capote and her relationship to him throughout the In Cold Blood years.

I believe it is considered the first true crime book.

great book. crazy that they almost got away with it. there really werent any leads until the ex prison mate spoke up. supposedly, Capote gathered thousands of pages of just information. what he didnt use in his book, he burned. he's brilliant. he never wrote down anything that was discussed. he memorized it ALL and when he got home he would write down everything that was said.

That doesn't surprise. Capote had a huge ego. He wouldn't dare acknowledge someone else had a hand is his most famous book.

I haven't read the book, but I saw the movie. It really creeped me out. Years later I moved to Garden City, KS. I was working in the court house and I was discussing movies with some of my coworkers. I made the remark about this movie and was told that the murder happened there.

I haven't read Capote's book, but I've seen both movies about Capote (Infamous is better than Capote). Capote did have a huge ego, but I think Harper Lee was (is) very retiring. It was his first true crime book.

Whoa, I didn't know that. That's pretty crazy, but also interesting. Thanks for sharing! Now I'm thinking of hunting this bio down as well!

"Mockingbird" by Charles Shields.

Harper Lee does not grant interviews so he had to write the whole thing without talking with her.

Yea I have to say I enjoyed Infamous way more than Capote too, recommend it to get an idea of their relationship. It's fascinating.

I just saw that on this day in history

1959
A farmer, his wife and two of their children were found murdered in their home in Holcomb, Kansas. The killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, were profiled in Truman Capote's non-fiction novel "In Cold Blood."
