I was not, but both my mom and DH's step mom had GD with one of their pregnancies and not others (my mom had 2 without and step mom had 1)
and remember...weight can be off +/- 1 lb in the u/s! I would not worry about size. We all thought Callie was huge, she measured large in US and my belly was huge...she ended up coming at 6lbs 14oz

My sister in law had GD only during her fourth pregnancy.
I agree about the weight thing, U/S measurements can be off. My friend's baby was measuring pretty big before birth and ended up weighing just a little over 7 lbs.

The reason why GD is usually present in all pregnancies for a particular woman, is because having GD is a strong indicator that you will get Type 2 diabetes later. It's possible you may skim by without it, but, chances are if you had GD with your previous pregnancy, you'll have it this time too.
My sister had GD with both of her pregnancies, and then came down with full-blown Type 2 within a few years after that. My mother didn't have GD with any of her 5 pregnancies, but developed Type 2 at around age 50. I didn't have GD with any of my 4 pregnancies, but because of my strong family history of the disease (mother and sister, plus my brother and son who both have Type 1 diabetes), I know I'm at high risk for it at some point.
Hopefully, you've been eating as if you had GD and monitoring your BS frequently for the entire pregnancy, rather than waiting for the test at 28 weeks.

Women tend to be more likely to develop GD in every subsequent pregnancy. If you develop it in a first pregnancy you are pretty certain to have it again. If you don't develop it in a first pregnancy, there's still a chance that you could in a second. It's very unlikely that someone would have GD in a first pregnancy and not in a second.

The only case I know of where a woman had GD and then didn't have it in a subsequent pregancy is my friend that had it with her twin pregnancy. Her next baby was a singleton, and she didn't develop GD that time.

I didn't have gestational diabetes with my first child, but I had insulin-dependent gestational diabetes with my second. It can happen that someone has it the first time and not again, but getting it once increases the risk that it will happen again.

I had it with my first, but not my second pregnancy. I gained 18 pounds with my first (8lbs, 7 oz baby) and 12 (8lb baby) with my second, fwiw. There is no type II diabetes in my family and I am not overweight. It seemed completely random, to me.

Glucose Tolerance Test is usually done around 28 weeks.

UPDATE:
well I do have to go back for the 3hour test this time.. (next week) I am so bummed out! I have been trying to watch what I eat and haven't gone crazy and haven't eaten any different from last pregnancy (maybe a few more McDonalds Sweet Teas) *shameful, I know*
My doctor said that I was just a smidgen out of the normal range so I still may not have it but she wants to make sure!
I have a lot of the pre-existing conditions though so maybe now that I think about it I shouldn't be all that shocked
- older in age when pregnant
- plus size
- diabetes in family (grandma)
- large baby (first time)
but even though I do have diabetes in family and I do weigh more than I would like I get my sugars tested all the time and never have I had problems..
I promised the doctor that I would watch what I ate.
I'll keep you all posted!

I'm sorry you need to go through the 3 hour, and I hope it all works out! Did you fast for the one-hour test?

I had GD with my third of five pregnancies and no others. My children had birth weights around seven and eight pounds but the boy I gave birth to when I had gestational diabetes weighed 10 lbs. Had him vaginally and I was 22 years old, 5'2" tall and my non-preg weight was around 115 lbs.
They have much better ways of caring for you now. Don't worry too much.

it seems so random, kitschy, doesn't it?! At both of my labors, the nurses said that they rarely see big birthweight babies from GD (unless insulin is needed).
Deedles, of course you should eat a healthy diet because you just should, but I wouldn't worry. You're doing just fine. And yes, you should fast for the 3 hour test!

Had mine today..... I feel like a freakin pin cushion! The drink this time was still 8oz but this time 100mg instead of 50mg... Thank God to my husband who put a movie (Yeah for Lifetime) on my ipod which helped a bunch I got out by 10:15am.
I planned on going to work right after but I didn't realize one of the side effects was being so tired afterwards.. I thought it would be the opposite I thought I would be jumping around.... Nope, I came home today and crashed for 3 hours!!!!
They'll have the results by Friday.. I see my OB next week *crossing fingers* that I passed...
