Flat Stanley
Has anyone's kids ever done this?
My 8-year-old godson from NY sent me a Flat Stanley, along with a letter asking me to take him around with me for a week and photograph him in different places, then mail the pictures back.
I just had to share the picture that Patric drew of Flat Stanley:
I love how he wrote "WEIRD" there, like some kind of statement on his true feelings of this activity.
Patric says Flat Stanley likes to eat yogurt, A1 steak sauce, macaroni, brownies, candy and chef salad. He also likes to watch cartoons, the news and football.
Some things will be a little tricky because I don't have TV (or time to drive 40-some miles to the mall), but I'm a huge nerd so I'm really looking forward to this.

My kids did this in first grade. And you just reminded me that I have another first grader this year!
Just take him places and take pictures of him everywhere you go. My brother did a little journal for Stanley, which was also fun. Other kids got their Stanleys back with new wardrobes, girlfriends and pets.
Have fun with him!

At parent-teacher conference this past Tuesday, my daughter's kindergarten teacher told us about Flat Stanley. It's an optional exercise but we signed up for it anyway. Sometime this year, Flat Stanley will be spending the weekend with us. Ours is on laminated cardboard, though. We'll do gymnastics and tennis with him, as well as grocery shopping and movie night. We can take pictures and paste them in the journal.
I think Patric's rendering of Flat Stanley is cute and him asking you to do this is even cuter. Have fun!

My cousin sent us Flat Stanley a couple years ago (he was probably around 7 at the time). His was also drawn by him.
We had to take him to EPCOT and show him the fun My husband and I probably looked a little silly taking pictures of ourselves holding up a little boys drawing, but we had a good time!

I believe this is the first time I've heard of Flat Stanley, but what a cute idea! I think it's adorable that he sent you one. Have fun with it. You should share some of the things you do.

Oh, I know. He even addressed the envelope himself. I showed all of it to A and he kept saying, "That is SO CUTE."
I wish we lived in an area with more historical/recognizable landmarks and places. Then the pictures would be especially cool.

My kids have done something similar. In DDs 1st grade class they had "Star of the Week" where every week a different child is the star. Part of the excersise is taking home a Clifford stuffed animal in a special backpack with Clifford books and a journal. You take Clifford around all weekend and then write about your adventures in the journal. It's so neat to see where the other kids have taken Clifford too. Last year DS had the same teacher so we did it again and...DS has the same teacher this year (she switches between K and 1st) so we'll get one more weekend with Clifford this school year.
Thought I'd share a funny story. A few years ago my brother got married and had a destination wedding. His closest friend wasn't able to go because he also works for my brother and someone had to stay behind to run the business. So we had a pic of T blown up to poster size and took the picture everywhere we went in Costa Rica. He even had his own seat at the wedding. You should have seen the weird looks we got from people but we didn't care. It was a way for T to not feel left out and for my brother to know T was there for him. And for a bunch of kooky people to have fun

That's totally adorable!
Maybe Flat Stanley likes radio news, too?

My DS did the Flat Stanley project lotsa years ago! I love that Flat Stanleys continue to be sent around the world. Ours only went to Wash DC and California, but one kid in the class sent him to Queen Elizabeth and got a letter back from a staffer on what looked like "official letterhead for replying to the masses", thanking him for sending Flat Stanley (but no pic of him at the Palace or with the Queen .... but still, the letter back was very nice! LOL!)

My oldest daughter did this years ago also. Hers went to CA and went hiking, got caught on cactus, cuddled with his huge dogs...fun.

My nephews sent me a Flat Stanley and I gave it to a very good friend of mine who is in the Air National Guard (as a pilot). He is a goofball and got all caught up in it and took it on a trip (mission) where his crew was dropping the Navy Parachute Team (the Leapfrogs) and he asked them if they would take a picture with Flat Stanley and write something like "it was great jumping with you" Well they said, "we won't write it if he doesn't jump with us" so one of the Navy guys held him while they were jumping out of the plane and since they often film their jumps, the guy with the camera on his helmet jumped with the guy who had Flat Stanley and they got the whole jump on video and sent it to me and I sent it to my nephew. Needless to say, he was the hit of his first grade class. Then my goofball friend decided that Flat Stanley was a good luck charm and he became his unit's unoffical mascot on their deployment to the middle east. It was too funny....because other guys would try to kidnap Flat Stanley and at one point, they sent out a ransom letter and such. I guess it was a way for them to have a little fun over there.

My first and only experience with this was last week when a lady asked me to help her photograph her grandson's Flat Stanley. We ended up having my baby hold it up with the ocean in the background. She was really excited that the baby got involved. And the baby seemed to enjoy it too.

I've never heard of this, but what a great idea. I hope my daughter gets to do this when she's in school.
