Neighbor issue: Domestic dispute

So here I was, finishing up my work at home when suddenly there was a bunch of girls yelling and running up and down stairs, slamming doors. They went into the apartment across the hall. At first I thought they were just being obnoxious, but not long after a guy showed up and was banging on the door, demanding to be let in.

At first he was somewhat quiet, though I could still hear him clearly through our door. Then he obviously was getting pissed at being ignored, because he started smashing his fist into the door, screaming expletives.

I was unnerved, so I can't imagine how those girls felt. As soon as I thought, "Maybe I should call the police," he was gone.

Should I have gone over to see if they were OK, or just stay out of it? I could hear him out in the hall again a few minutes ago, but it's quiet now.

I agree, but wouldn't talk with the people across the hall about it.

I would call the police but I wouldn't confront a stranger or ask my neighbors about the situation.

Right, OK. I just wanted verification that I was doing the right thing there. My intention wouldn't have been to pry for information or anything, I was genuinely concerned for them.

A little while later my boyfriend was coming up the stairs to our apartment when that guy was stomping around, getting ready for another round of door pounding. Some college-age jerkoff. SO said he gave the kid the stink eye, and we didn't hear anything for the rest of the night. I'll keep my phone handy in case it ever happens again, though.

We haven't heard any major noise since that night. I guess it just means the guy learned to be more quiet when he beats his girlfriend, because my SO said he saw our neighbor sporting a black eye this morning.

I know. I have a decent working relationship with our local sheriff's sergeant, so when I see him Tuesday morning I'm going to talk to him about it. See if he has any tips for a concerned outsider, or if he'd be willing to have his deputies keep an eye out.

I remember seeing three police vehicles outside our building a month or so ago, lights flashing, and I never knew what they were doing here. So maybe they're already aware of this douchebag.

Oh no. I'm sorry to hear about this. I lived somewhere where this couple had a domestic dispute. The guy didn't live there but spent a lot of time at his g/fs apt. The yelling was really violent and the first time I heard it, he was apparently throwing things (maybe furniture?)

It got worse before the girl apparently got an order of protection. It was really scary.

I'm glad things seemed to have calmed down on your end.

We had a bad, bad situation going on a few years ago. This is what we did. The neighbors eventually moved out.
