Default What's the point of folding laundry?

Is it a learned behavior? do we only fold laundry because our parents did it and so on and so forth? I stopped folding my laundry a couple of months ago and it just made more sense and saved time. Im just going to unfold them when Im ready to wear/use them anyway.
I stole baskets like these from my parent's closet and I've been using them to store my bath towels in and it works just fine. My dresser drawers are organized but the clothes are never folded. Once the drawer is closed you can't even tell.
Anyone else do this?

and yes the bolded is my excuse for being too lazy to sit down long enough to fold towels. i hate folding!

Well, everything fits better into a confined space (like closet shelves and dresser drawers), plus I would imagine there's a lot less wrinkles.

Yeah, I can't imagine all the wrinkles if I stopped folding. As is, if I don't get stuff out of the dryer and fold it within about a half hour of the dryer stopping, I usually retumble for a few minutes before folding, to prevent wrinkles.

Me too, I hate wearing wrinkled clothes! That being said, I don't usually fold things like underwear and other things that don't wrinkle, or it doesn't matter, like towels

Out of the whole process (washing, drying, etc) I find folding relaxing. And like Pixiecurl noted if I do not hear the buzzer of the dryer and they sit for a while I also start it again and let it go for a bit to get out the wrinkles. And I HATE ironing!!! HATE. IT.!!! I take SO's dress shirts to the dry cleaners just to have them iron them. It is so worth it to me to not have to iron. I am another one that cannot stand wrinkly clothes so folding works for me.

Hmm I fold clothes- but I NEVER EVER iron. Which my mother cannot fathom. Dude -once clothes are hung up (or folded lol) the wrinkles fall right out.

I do whoever stuff knickers and socks in drawers screwed up- because they dont matter

i hate folding too, but if i don't my clothes wrinkle and i can't seem to find anything if it's all just tossed together in the drawer--socks, for instance. i'd never be able to find matching ones if i didn't pair them up. i hang up as much stuff as i can in the closet to avoid folding, though.

I don't fold. I am not sticking around at the laundromat any longer than I have to. The folders have been known to give horrified, incredulous looks, and to utter words of disapproval at the sight of laundry being thrown into the laundry bag with nary a care.

Ha! I find laundromats to be scary places. Or maybe I've just been unlucky. Every time I've went, half of the people there appeared to be crazy or drunk or child molesters.

I would guess it depends on where you live. Here in NY so many people go to the laundromat. I had two within a five minute walking distance and have about three just around the corner at my new place. People were stranger in Rhode Island (don't even get me started on the difference between people who take public transportation here and those there).

In theory I have every intention of folding once I stuff my laundry in the bag and walk home, but undoubtedly I just throw the bag down on the floor and go off on my merry way.

Oh, I'm sure it does. I'm in southeast/central Kentucky and when I moved here a couple years ago from another county, I discovered there's only one laundromat in town and it was on the opposite end of town at that. It was a frightening place. I went two times and then went to Lowe's and bought a washer and dryer that I really couldn't afford. It freaked me out to be there, especially after dark. LOL.

As far as on topic though, I can't imagine not folding some things. I enjoy folding towels actually. I don't fold my underwear and I just kind of roll over the ends of my sock pairs and toss them in a drawer. I do fold my boyfriend's underwear because he's weird about it (and a total slob in a lot of other ways, while I'm a neat freak - go figure). I hang up anything that I can though... I guess I really only fold pajama type clothes that I put in my dresser. And of course towels and such. I've never folded extra sheets though. I can't even figure out how to fold a fitted sheet, and I really don't care.

It's not bad, if the place is clean, and uncrowded. Parts of "Dr. Horrible" were set in a laundromat.

guano:

I saw a funny thing happen at a laundromat in Paris. One of the group with whom I was living threw his clothes in the dryer, then left with the rest of us to do who knows what. Hours later, when we all went back to get his clothes, we found the place locked, but saw his poor laundry still spinning away, having dried for ages, now half the size it had been when he'd thrown it in. He pounded on the glass and yelled in French and English, to no avail.

When I lived in the city, as a single gal, I sent my laundry out to be done. I don't recall it being expensive and it saved me so much time.

Towels and fitted sheets get folded off the washing line, socks get rolled together in balls. Everything else gets ironed, folded and put away neatly. I don't however fold things as they come out of the washing machine before being hung on the line, nor do I fold washing off the line before it gets ironed (Hello mother!).

I cannot understand how people don't iron at all, it's just, well, slovenly and scruffy imo!

I fold my clothes because it saves time for me, if i don't fold my clothes I'll need to iron later and that in itself is time consuming, getting out the iron and ironing board and waiting for the iron to heat up plus ironing out all the creases which are way harder to remove on dry clothes.

I've always wanted to do that. Did it come back all nicely wrapped in kraft paper?

I know right, I do the same thing. Ironing is just so mundane if you ask me. I don't like irons for the fact the break so easily also
